After Super Typhoon Ragasa left, orders at tea shops surged, and bubble tea workers were overwhelmed.
Typhoon "Ragasa" approached Guangdong with Category 17 intensity, prompting Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities to successively activate "five suspensions" measures, forcing residents to pause going out for a day. As the typhoon made landfall in Yangjiang's Hailing Island and weakened, the "five suspensions" were lifted across various areas, and demand for tea beverage consumption was instantly unleashed. Orders on delivery platforms surged at one point, with stores of Starbucks, Heytea, Nayuki, 1 Dian Dian, Chagee and others generally experiencing order explosions, some stores briefly receiving two to three hundred orders, leaving milk tea workers overwhelmed. Insufficient staffing and material preparation led to slow order fulfillment and frequent mistakes, with consumers waiting over an hour. This post-typhoon tea beverage consumption wave not only reflects the high-frequency rigid demand for drinks in daily life but also makes frontline workers the most direct "bearers" of the pressure. Ethiopia's Coffee Industry Credit Default Dilemma and the Controversy Over Vertical Integration Policy
Recently, Ethiopia's coffee industry has been thrown into chaos by a wave of credit defaults. Coffee farmers who supplied coffee beans to exporters and suppliers on credit have been waiting in vain for payment, with the amount owed reaching into the billions of birr. Some farmers have even committed suicide out of despair, and radicals have attempted to rob exporters of their property. The government blames the problem on the "vertical integration" plan introduced five years ago and fully implemented two years ago, which replaced the original ECX trading model and was intended to allow coffee farmers, suppliers, and cooperatives to export coffee directly and benefit from international price incentives. However, at a meeting between the government and growers on March 8, 2024, both the Minister of Agriculture and the Director General of the Coffee and Tea Authority held that the benefits of vertical integration outweigh the drawbacks, that defaulters are only a minority, and that violators have already been blacklisted. But coffee farmers and producers say that banks' suspension of loans and the National Bank's 14% credit growth cap have led to the market being controlled by a handful of wealthy exporters, leaving them with no choice but to sell on credit. Last year, 90% of coffee was exported through the vertical integration plan, and farmers are calling on the government to regulate the market. Front Street Coffee reminds that this incident highlights the importance of fair trade and financial support in the coffee industry chain. [more…]

Manner stores see sudden wave of temporary closures: internal staffing adjustments and shortened business hours draw attention
Recently, many consumers have noticed that Manner coffee shops near them have suddenly closed their doors, showing "resting" on the mini-program, with no clear notice and no timetable for resuming business. It is understood that this phenomenon is closely related to Manner's internal personnel adjustments: baristas with excessive working hours are arranged to take leave, while those with insufficient hours are transferred to other stores for support, resulting in some stores having to temporarily close. At the same time, the brand has also shortened the operating hours of some stores, with morning shifts starting later and evening shifts ending earlier. Whether this adjustment can allow Manner to find a balance between chain expansion, specialty quality, and affordable positioning has become a focal point of industry attention. [more…]

Firefights between Fano forces and the government's joint forces have advanced to only about 55 kilometers from the capital, Addis Ababa. Fighting is intense around cities such as Gondar, and government troops have failed to achieve expected results on multiple fronts, with increasing defections among riot police and militia. At the same time, millions of students have been out of school, medical facilities have been damaged, and the region's economy has suffered severe losses. As a pillar industry accounting for as much as 30 to 40 percent of export earnings, the coffee sector is facing multiple shocks, including instability in producing areas, traders withdrawing, the Red Sea crisis, and the suspension of operations at Djibouti's ports, making the supply outlook far from optimistic. Attacks by Yemen's Houthi armed forces in the Red Sea and surrounding waters continue to escalate, with three ships targeted in a single day, further intensifying regional tensions. Vessels operated by Maersk and MSC were successively targeted, and MSC, citing persistent threats, announced a full suspension of services at the Port of Djibouti. The Port of Djibouti is the sole outlet for Ethiopian cargo exports, and with MSC accounting for 80% of the port's shipping capacity, this move has dealt a severe blow to Ethiopia's coffee exports. Coffee traders now face the dilemma of having booked space but no shipping date, with freight rates soaring and arrival times impossible to guarantee, while the Houthis' expansion of their strikes beyond their traditional threat zone is likely to further drive up shipping costs and coffee trading prices.
