Celebrity tea brand Thank You Tea's nationwide stores drop to zero: from nearly 70 yuan per cup to failed smart transformation

Another shutdown message has come from the tea beverage sector. Xiexie Tea, invested by well-known host Ma Dong, has closed its last national outlet, the Shenzhen Dalang store, on July 16, completely wiping out its physical stores. This celebrity brand, founded in 2018, once rode on the hype of traffic-driving guests like Ma Dong and the New Pants band, selling a cup of milk tea for nearly 70 yuan, but after the pandemic, its prices slid all the way down to the 12-yuan range, all bakery products were removed, and its pivot to smart milk tea stores showed no improvement. Its official Weibo, WeChat public account, and mini-program have successively stopped updating or been discontinued. The traffic dividends and operational shortcomings of celebrity catering have once again become a focal point of attention in the coffee and tea beverage industry. [more…]

Does removing ice from coffee cost an extra dollar? Let's talk about the logic behind charging for no-ice cold drinks and the role of ice

On a scorching summer day, a cold drink is almost standard for going out. To get more of the drink itself, many people choose light ice or even no ice. However, a chain coffee shop in Seattle, USA, explicitly states on its menu: drinks without ice cost an extra $1. This rule has sparked heated discussion online, with some calling it exploitation and others expressing understanding—after all, no ice means the shop has to add more ingredients. Meanwhile, various bizarre coffee orders keep appearing on foreign social platforms, from Frappuccinos with N types of syrup to a $5 order of just milk, making one wonder: if a $5 cup of milk is acceptable, why is a $1 surcharge for a hot drink hard to accept? This article will guide you through this charging controversy and reacquaint you with the easily overlooked important role of ice in cold drinks. [more…]

Vietnam's drought persists amid uneven rainfall, with Robusta potentially facing a 2.7 million bag supply deficit next year

The dual impact of persistent drought and uneven rainfall distribution has cast a shadow over the global robusta coffee supply outlook. In Vietnam's Dak Lak province, about 40% of coffee trees still lack water, and coffee production is expected to decline by 20% to a four-year low; in Brazil's largest producing region, Minas Gerais, there has been no rain for three consecutive weeks. Although prices previously plummeted due to a recovery in exports and the restoration of international inventories, signs of a rebound have recently emerged. Global financial services platform Marex Group Plc predicts that, affected by reduced production in Brazil, Vietnam, and Indonesia, the global robusta coffee market will face a supply gap of 2.7 million bags next year, and upward pressure on prices should not be underestimated. Pang Dong Lai's Cross-Industry Self-Operated Coffee Shop: Not Competing on Price or Chasing Gimmicks, How Far Can It Go Relying on Sincere Service?

Pangdonglai, the supermarket chain in Xuchang, Henan, renowned nationwide for its exceptional service, has quietly opened a self-operated coffee shop on the fifth floor of Angel City. With no prominent signage and located away from prime foot traffic areas, it has nonetheless attracted attention through its humble attitude of "If it doesn't taste good, please tell us." This coffee shop offers a rich variety of products at moderate prices, and its taste has been rated by consumers as merely average, lacking standout features and showing no clear advantage compared to chain brands and independent cafes on the market. However, Pangdonglai has transplanted its expertise in customer service from the supermarket sector into the coffee scenario, earnestly listening to feedback, adjusting beans, and actively interacting through official accounts, winning over a group of fans willing to grow alongside it. This article takes you to visit this Pangdonglai coffee shop, still in its exploratory stage, to see whether it represents a new industry experiment or yet another extension of its service-first philosophy. Vietnamese dong depreciation, combined with the heatwave and the Red Sea crisis, has pushed coffee prices rebounding from a trough to the $4,000 range.

In late April, Robusta coffee futures surged to a historic high of US$4,339 per tonne, dragging Arabica futures up along with them. Entering May, Brazil and Vietnam successively released their April export reports, showing growth in both production and export volumes. ICE coffee inventories briefly eased market anxiety, and the enthusiasm for chasing futures buys cooled somewhat. However, after tropical agricultural products fell by nearly 14% overall, purchase prices in Vietnam's central growing regions quickly rebounded to 96 million to 100 million Vietnamese dong per tonne after dropping to 90 million dong per tonne. The interplay of multiple factors—drought, competition from crops such as durian, the continued depreciation of the Vietnamese dong, and rising freight rates on the Red Sea route—makes a rebound in coffee bean prices a highly probable event. Front Street Coffee will continue to monitor the deeper logic behind this round of volatility. [more…]

Vietnamese coffee prices continue to climb, and the Red Sea shipping crisis may further intensify it.

Coffee prices within Vietnam have once again climbed. In the Central Highlands, the largest producing region, purchase prices have generally risen by 1,300 to 1,400 Vietnamese dong per kilogram, and the price of coffee beans in bulk has risen to a range of 92,400 to 93,200 Vietnamese dong per kilogram. On the international market, Robusta futures for delivery in May 2024 rose to 3,450 US dollars per ton, while Arabica fell back to 182.95 US cents per pound. At the same time, armed attacks in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait continue to escalate, with the Houthi armed group threatening to expand the scope of attacks to the Indian Ocean, and global shipping is facing a new round of pressure. Vietnamese coffee exporters, meanwhile, have high hopes for the Italian market, where Robusta occupies a dominant position. [more…]

Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association warns: Robusta supply gap persists in 2024, coffee prices may climb to new highs

The latest statement from the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa) indicates that Vietnamese coffee prices are highly likely to continue their upward trend in 2024, with the core driver still being severely tight supply. Current spot quotes for robusta have risen to 67,200-68,000 Vietnamese dong/kg, up 900-1,000 dong from last week and about 8,000 dong higher cumulatively since early December. The new crop season opened in November at a record high of 60,000 dong/kg, with traders rushing to buy early out of fear of repeating last year's June predicament of having no beans to purchase, while coffee farmers, expecting further price increases, are holding back sales, leading to fulfillment difficulties and a distorted export structure. El Niño continues to intensify, and robusta-producing regions in Brazil and Indonesia are expected to see lower output, further reinforcing the logic of rising prices—something coffee industry professionals and enthusiasts should closely watch. Vietnam's coffee export revenue reached 3.22 billion USD in the first half of the year, yet exporter Vinacafe reported losses, with cumulative losses exceeding one trillion dong.

In the first half of 2024, Vietnam's exports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached about US$29.2 billion, up 19% year on year, with coffee standing out at US$3.22 billion in export value; although export volume fell 10.5%, a 50.4% rise in the average price drove the growth. However, Vietnam's largest coffee company, Vinacafe, has reported losses; although it achieved its first profit in 2023, its cumulative losses still exceed 1.09 trillion Vietnamese dong. A combination of aging coffee plantations, severe weather, rising fertilizer prices and the Red Sea crisis is putting pressure on Vietnam's coffee industry. This article takes you behind the joys and worries of Vietnam's coffee exports. [more…]

Domestic coffee prices in Vietnam climb to new peaks, while international Robusta and Arabica markets continue to decline

Vietnam's domestic coffee market has recently seen a rare turn of events: even as international futures prices broadly decline, domestic purchasing prices have risen against the trend, with the highest price in the Central Highlands provinces reaching 82,300 Vietnamese dong per kilogram, setting a new all-time record. At the same time, Germany's share of imports of Vietnamese coffee has risen rather than fallen, showing that Europe's reliance on Vietnamese robusta continues to deepen. However, expected production cuts caused by climate change and some coffee farmers switching to durian cultivation are planting more uncertainty on the supply side for the future. This article combines the latest exchange data and producing-region quotes to trace the ins and outs of this round of price fluctuations. [more…]

At the same time, Vietnam's domestic coffee purchase price has soared to 103 million to 107 million Vietnamese dong per ton, and London futures prices have risen by more than 50% within a year.
