Previously affected by the Shanghai pandemic lockdown, the preparation progress was once hindered, and many people believed that Blue Bottle's entry timing was poor. However, during the pandemic's closed-loop production period, Blue Bottle, relying on the advantage of fresh coffee beans from its own roasting factory, instead gained a wave of goodwill in community group buying and home coffee consumption scenarios. This article reviews Blue Bottle Coffee's pricing logic, brand positioning, and the prospects of the specialty coffee market, exploring whether this expansion is ill-timed or well-timed. [more…]

Shanghai Manner Coffee outlet under investigation for hygiene and food storage violations
Shanghai's food and beverage industry is steadily resuming work and reopening, but some stores have neglected food safety, a bottom line, amid the busyness. Recently, law enforcement officers from the Jing'an District Market Supervision Bureau found during an inspection that the Manner Coffee Wujiang Road store had problems such as dirty and messy environmental hygiene and food not being stored according to regulations. Waste was scattered on the floor at the scene, food for sale was placed directly on the ground, and Meiji milk that needed refrigeration was also left casually. Because it is suspected of violating relevant provisions of the Food Safety Law, the store has been officially placed under investigation. The regulatory authorities remind food and beverage units to strictly fulfill their primary responsibilities and ensure the safety of meals served. [more…]
Blue Bottle Coffee's second mainland China store opens in Jing'an, Shanghai, with significantly shorter queues than the first store
Blue Bottle Coffee, hailed as the "Apple of the coffee world," opened its second store in mainland China on August 5 at Shanghai's Jing'an Kerry Centre. Unlike its first store by the Suzhou Creek, this new location is rooted in the Nanjing West Road commercial area, with a two-story space of over 500 square meters and about 160 seats, mainly targeting white-collar workers. The design incorporates traditional Chinese roof tile elements, using more than 13,000 handmade terracotta bricks. On opening day, queues were still necessary, but the wait time had shrunk from seven hours at the first store half a year ago to about 25 minutes. Blue Bottle Coffee has not joined the domestic price war, maintaining its niche specialty pricing of 28 to 50 yuan. [more…]
Nayuki's Shanghai store fined 50,000 yuan for selling expired cakes, food safety controversy continues to escalate after listing
Nayuki Tea has once again been thrust into the spotlight due to food safety issues. The Market Supervision Administration of Jing'an District, Shanghai, recently imposed a penalty on Nayuki's Shanghai Meilongzhen Plaza store for selling expired grape-flavored cakes to consumers, with a fine of 50,000 yuan. This is not an isolated case—since its listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in June this year, Nayuki's stores have repeatedly been exposed for food safety scandals such as cockroach infestations, spoiled fruit, and excessive bacterial counts. Consequently, its stock price has plummeted from the issue price of HKD 19.80 to around HKD 9, leading to a significant drop in market value. From being the "first stock of new-style tea drinks" to being plagued by negative news, Nayuki's brand reputation is facing a severe test. [more…]

Closed in less than three months: Why did Shanghai's 6,200-yuan-per-cup coffee shop exit so quickly?
A cup of coffee priced at 6,200 yuan once made a specialty coffee shop in Shanghai's Jing'an District quickly go viral online. However, from its soft opening to the news of its closure, the shop's life cycle was less than three months. This article reviews the rise and fall of that shop, looks back at the "sky-high coffee" phenomenon that appeared in many parts of the country in 2023, and explores the common "BOP auction champion" label behind it. For coffee lovers in pursuit of extreme flavor, besides tasting it in the shop, jointly purchasing champion roasted beans and sharing them with friends is also a rational choice. Front Street Coffee reminds us that the value of specialty coffee should ultimately return to the flavor itself, rather than being a mere price gimmick. [more…]

Tea Beauty makes its first foray into South China with a location in Nanshan, Shenzhen; the choice of two store sites has sparked lively discussion among consumers.
TEA YAN YUE SE has officially announced that it will enter the South China market this April, opening two stores simultaneously in Nanshan District, Shenzhen. Once the news broke, Shenzhen residents responded enthusiastically, but the choice of location for the new stores sparked considerable discussion—both stores are located in Yuehai Subdistrict at MixC and MixC World, only about 4 kilometers apart, and many netizens expressed confusion over the brand not choosing downtown areas such as Futian or Luohu. Previously, TEA YAN YUE SE had opened a pop-up store at Wenheyou in Luohu that triggered a queuing frenzy, and consumers had originally expected the brand to prioritize Futian or Luohu. Landslide in the Konta district near Jimma, Ethiopia, kills 6, putting multiple pressures on the coffee harvest season and exports
A landslide occurred recently in the Konta district of southwestern Ethiopia, killing at least six people. The area is adjacent to important coffee-producing regions such as Jimma and Kaffa. Since the start of this year, the locality has repeatedly suffered similar disasters, with about 300 people killed between July and September. Persistent heavy rainfall not only threatens public safety but also delays coffee harvesting, obstructs transportation, and puts pressure on output. At the same time, the regional security situation, exchange rate fluctuations, rising fertilizer costs, and the drought risk that La Niña may bring all make the outlook for Ethiopia's coffee industry full of uncertainty. However, the delay of the EU's EUDR and the decline in coffee prices, as well as the lowering of the minimum export floor price, also bring a glimmer of good news for exports. [more…]

Armed attack in Ethiopia's Sidama Kenso district leaves 14 dead, coffee-producing region faces security and economic pressure
In the Konso Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region in southern Ethiopia, armed attacks lasting several days recently occurred, resulting in at least 14 deaths, including 8 police officers and 5 civilians, with another person later confirmed dead. The attackers targeted police stations, government institutions, and civilians, looting property and setting fire to government buildings and residences, and only fled after the national defense forces and federal police intervened. The Konso Zone is not only part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region but also an important component of the Sidamo coffee-producing area, adjacent to the Yirgacheffe region. This incident has displaced approximately 37,000 people, with property losses exceeding 600 million birr. Although the armed militants have withdrawn, they may move to surrounding areas to continue their activities, posing a direct threat to the region's coffee and other agricultural industries. Meanwhile, the depreciation of Ethiopia's currency and domestic inflation, combined with the security situation, have cast a shadow over the prospects for coffee exports. Front Street Coffee will continue to monitor developments in the producing area. [more…]
Starbucks Reserve at Parc Central in Guangzhou Confirmed to Close: Why Do Stores in Core Commercial Districts Also Struggle to Survive?
Recently, news emerged that the Starbucks Reserve store at Guangzhou's Parc Central is set to close, with official confirmation that it will officially cease operations in the coming days. This store, which opened in 2017, was created by Starbucks to celebrate its 15th anniversary of entering the South China market and was once hailed as "one of Guangzhou's most design-forward stores." Unlike previously closed old stores located in declining foot traffic commercial districts, this closure is in a core commercial area of Tianhe District, surrounded by luxury brands, and the store was almost always full on a daily basis. However, high rent, low table turnover caused by the open-plan space, and phenomena such as "people only checking in for photos without consuming" may have made it difficult for the store to be profitable after deducting costs. Starbucks stated that the reason for the closure is adjustments to the business mix in the commercial district and said there are still more than 10 nearby stores for consumers to choose from. [more…]
