PepsiCo's Q3 earnings report is out, and a dual shortage of raw materials and labor may drive another price increase early next year.

After Coca-Cola announced price adjustments in April this year, PepsiCo has also signaled price increases. Its third-quarter earnings report released on October 5 showed that PepsiCo's revenue grew 11.6% year-on-year, but both operating costs and selling expenses rose by more than 10%. Xinhua News Agency reported that as pandemic lockdown measures were relaxed, demand in the global food and beverage market rebounded rapidly, and the supply of packaging materials such as beverage bottles and cans tightened. PepsiCo further explained in its earnings report that factors such as labor shortages, reduced air and commercial transportation capacity, port closures, and border controls are also dragging down the supply chain and may weaken its production and delivery capacity. Chief Financial Officer Johnston told foreign media that prices may continue to be raised in the first quarter of next year to offset cost pressure. Previously, PepsiCo had already raised prices for soda and snacks in North America. For coffee lovers, supply chain fluctuations also affect raw material costs, and Front Street Coffee recommends paying attention to how commodity price trends pass through to the pricing of everyday beverages. Luckin's Q3 net profit exceeds 500 million, achieving a turnaround, and it will restart franchise recruitment in lower-tier markets at year-end.

Luckin Coffee's Q3 2022 financial report is out: total revenue for the quarter rose 65.7% year-on-year to 3.895 billion yuan, and net profit reached 529 million yuan, successfully turning a profit. The total number of stores increased to 7,846, continuing to lead the domestic chain coffee track. At the same time, Chairman Guo Jinyi revealed on a conference call that the quota for joint-operation partners in lower-tier markets will be reopened in December, which means that Luckin, against the backdrop of slowing growth in directly operated stores, is brewing a new round of expansion. Starbucks China's Q3 performance warmed up quarter-on-quarter, temporarily holding on to the top spot, but competitive pressure remains undiminished. Nayuki closes a net 89 directly operated stores in Q3, silent withdrawals from multiple locations draw attention

Recently, a social media user alleged that Nayuki is about to face a wave of store closures in Taizhou, Zhejiang, and the news quickly sparked widespread discussion. According to Nayuki's official Q3 2024 operational report, the brand closed a total of 89 directly operated stores during the quarter. Although it opened 23 new directly operated stores and 56 franchise stores in the same period, its overall store count still shrank by 10. Compared with Heytea, which has already reached 4,417 stores, Nayuki's pace of expansion has clearly slowed. The company said it will adopt a more prudent store expansion strategy and optimize the performance of existing directly operated stores, but many consumers have reported issues such as declining product quality control and baked bread being switched from freshly baked to pre-made products, raising concerns about the brand's prospects. This article will examine Nayuki's current operational challenges from two dimensions: data and consumer feedback. [more…]

Will new-style coffee follow in the footsteps of new-style tea drinks and fall into irrational involution? An analysis of price trends and market logic

In the sweltering heat of summer, beverage consumption reaches its peak. On street corners and in alleys, young people are holding either tea drinks or coffee. But upon closer observation, one will find that new-style tea drinks and coffee are embarking on entirely different development trajectories: brands like Heytea and Nayuki are cutting prices, while Luckin Coffee and Starbucks are raising them. The coffee sector's popularity is soaring, with giants such as Huawei, Li-Ning, and China Post making cross-industry forays, intensifying competition to a fever pitch. At the same time, new-style coffee is increasingly resembling milk tea, with ingredients like cheese, matcha, and brown sugar crystal boba appearing frequently. This prompts the question: will new-style coffee repeat the mistakes of irrational involution in the new-style tea drink sector? This article will analyze from perspectives such as price changes, market positioning, and product innovation, and bring professional observations from Front Street Coffee. [more…]

Luckin surpasses 20,000 stores but faces profit pressure: the coffee industry dilemma behind the price war and declining same-store sales

Luckin Coffee's Q2 2024 financial report shows total net revenue of 8.403 billion yuan and net profit of 871.1 million yuan, with the total number of stores approaching 20,000. However, same-store sales at self-operated stores fell 20.9% year-on-year, and Starbucks' same-store sales in the Chinese market also dropped 14%. Beneath the surface of growth in both revenue and store count, the same-store data reveals hidden concerns. The price war continues to escalate, with promotions of 9.9 yuan or even 6.6 yuan emerging one after another. Brands are trading low prices for sales volume, yet profitability pressure is hard to conceal. Leading brands and small and medium-sized brands alike are caught in the scramble for locations, with stores opening ever more densely while the survival space of individual stores is continuously squeezed. This article will combine the latest financial report data to analyze why Luckin finds it harder to make money amid scale expansion, and to explore the evolution of the competitive landscape in the coffee industry. Tims Tianhao China Added Only 4 Net Stores in Q1, Debt Ratio Climbed to 127.8%

Tims China has released its Q1 2024 financial report, with revenue up 3.1% year-on-year to 346.8 million yuan and system sales up 7.1% to 363.5 million yuan. However, this seemingly steady performance did not win investor approval, and the stock price fell on the day the report was released. More worrying is that the company added only 4 net new coffee stores in the first quarter, a sharp drop from 149 net new stores in the previous quarter and the lowest expansion record since going public. At the same time, the price war in the coffee industry continues to escalate, forcing Tims into the 9.9 yuan competition. Combined with the limited effect of its bakery product price increase strategy, the company's net loss reached 142.8 million yuan, and its debt ratio rose to 127.8%. Although it has secured US$20 million in financing from Cartesian Capital to ease cash flow pressure, its financial difficulties have not been fundamentally resolved. In terms of the franchise business, although applications reached 3,000, only 19 stores actually opened, a stark contrast. Tims once proposed a goal of 10,000 stores in 5 to 10 years, but given the current situation, that vision is becoming increasingly distant. [more…]

This article will review Luckin's listing turmoil, the details of its settlement, and possible paths for its future return to the capital market, while also exploring the impact of intensifying competition in the domestic coffee market on its prospects. Luckin Coffee Plans to Enter the US Next Year: Can Its Low-Price Strategy Shake Starbucks' Position?

Recent reports suggest that Luckin Coffee plans to enter the US market as early as next year, aiming to challenge local giants like Starbucks with affordable beverages priced at $2 to $3. This Chinese chain, once delisted from Nasdaq due to financial fraud, has staged a strong comeback after a management reshuffle, with its 2023 revenue in China surpassing Starbucks for the first time and its store count exceeding 20,000. Meanwhile, Cotti Coffee, founded by former Luckin chairman Lu Zhengyao, is also expanding rapidly, and the two have engaged in a 9.9 yuan price war domestically. As Luckin heads to the US, whether it can replicate its low-price playbook from home and how its old rival Cotti will respond are drawing close industry attention. [more…]

OATLY's losses widened to nearly $400 million last year. Is the oat milk coffee sector cooling down?

Oatly, the oat milk pioneer, recently released its full-year and fourth-quarter financial results for 2022, reporting a net loss of nearly $400 million for the year, further widening from 2021. Although sales volume in the Asian market grew 32% year-on-year, revenue in Asia fell by $800,000 in the fourth quarter due to the impact of the pandemic. China, as the core of Oatly's Asian business, accounts for as much as 93%, and fluctuations in its performance have a significant impact on the overall Asian market. Oatly quickly opened up the market with its positioning as a "new coffee companion" through partnerships with chain brands such as Starbucks, but now the plant-based milk concept has cooled, emerging brands are proliferating, consumers' acceptance of oat milk is still lower than that of dairy milk, and coupled with its relatively high price, Oatly faces the risk of being replaced. To this end, Oatly is trying to find new growth points by expanding into new products such as tea drinks and ice cream, as well as through financing. [more…]

Starbucks China's same-store sales stop falling and rebound; CEO responds to equity sale and store experience upgrade plans

Starbucks' financial report for the third quarter of fiscal year 2025 shows that global same-store sales declined for the sixth consecutive quarter, but the Chinese market delivered a standout performance: revenue grew 8% year over year and same-store sales rose 2%, the first positive growth in 18 months. Regarding rumors of a stake sale in its China business, CEO Niccol responded that more than 20 interested parties have expressed interest, and Starbucks hopes to retain a considerable proportion of equity. At the same time, the brand announced that it will accelerate the rollout of the "Green Apron Service Model," and plans to close some pickup-only stores and renovate over a thousand coffeehouses in order to rebuild warm human connections. Front Street Coffee continues to follow Starbucks' strategic adjustments and operational changes in the global and Chinese markets. [more…]

After completing the interim liquidation, Luckin expects costs related to fraudulent transactions to significantly decrease in the second quarter of 2022. There is continued external interest in its return to the Nasdaq main board. [more…]
