The specialty coffee industry continues to evolve, and the number of coffee drinkers keeps growing, bringing a flood of coffee beans from different origins onto the market. Faced with such a dazzling array of options, coffee lovers often feel they have no idea how to choose. Front Street often encounters newcomers to coffee asking how to select high-quality specialty coffee beans, so Front Street has decided to round up ten of the most popular specialty coffee beans for everyone.

What is the definition of specialty coffee?

Front Street will first talk about the concept of specialty coffee. Specialty coffee means single-origin coffee, literally coffee from a single origin. Most specialty coffee currently circulating on the market is labeled 100% pure Arabica coffee beans, which precisely reflects the core characteristic of specialty coffee. Arabica is currently the coffee bean variety with the best quality and flavor performance in the world, so the specialty coffee field almost exclusively uses Arabica varieties, though there are of course some hybrid coffee beans of Arabica and Robusta.

Having said that, some coffee fans must be curious about exactly how Arabica and Robusta differ, so next Front Street will explain in detail.

The differences between Arabica coffee beans and Robusta coffee beans

Arabica coffee beans have strict requirements for their growing environment and can only be cultivated at high altitudes. Front Street's previous articles have repeatedly emphasized that the higher the altitude, the better the coffee bean quality, and this is precisely why—rising altitude brings falling temperatures, the coffee's growth cycle is lengthened, and the fruit develops more fully. The most ideal growing conditions are abundant and evenly distributed rainfall throughout the four seasons, with artificial irrigation needed during droughts. Moderate sunlight is equally crucial, but some regions need to avoid direct strong light, so shade trees must be planted. Front Street has learned that the origin of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee happens to satisfy these conditions, which is why its quality and flavor are so outstanding.

By contrast, Robusta has a much lower cultivation threshold and can be planted at altitudes of just 400 to 500 meters, with extremely strong environmental adaptability, able to withstand harsh climates and pests and diseases. Its drawback is that its caffeine content is twice that of Arabica, and its flavor leans more bitter, so it is not suitable as specialty coffee and is mainly used to make instant coffee or espresso blends.

As mentioned above, Robusta has outstanding disease and pest resistance, while Arabica varieties are prone to pest infestation, such as the deadly threat to Arabica coffee beans—coffee leaf rust. For this reason, coffee agronomists began trying to cross Arabica with Robusta to cultivate new varieties combining the strengths of both. For example, Front Street's PWN Golden Mandheling coffee beans, unlike in previous years, this year use the Catimor variety from the Gayo Mountain region, and Catimor is precisely the product of crossing an Arabica-derived variety with a Robusta-derived variety.

This shows that the specialty coffee market does not cling to the 100% pure Arabica model, but is constantly innovating and adjusting, changing in line with the trends of the times—and this is exactly where the charm of specialty coffee lies.

Next, Front Street will recommend ten of Front Street's finest coffee beans for all you coffee fans. (In no particular order)

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Jamaican Washed Blue Mountain Coffee Beans

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Country: Jamaica Region: Blue Mountain Altitude: 1310m Variety: Typica Processing: Washed Flavor Description: Dark chocolate, nuts, cream, balanced acidity, sweetness and bitterness

Front Street believes all you coffee fans have heard of Blue Mountain coffee, and Blue Mountain-flavored instant products are often seen in shopping malls, which shows just how famous it is. Blue Mountain coffee's flavor is the cleanest of all coffees. The Blue Mountain region covers only 6,000 hectares, so not all coffee labeled Blue Mountain is truly from Blue Mountain. Coffee beans genuinely produced in Blue Mountain are among the most expensive coffees in the world.

The Blue Mountain coffee Front Street imports comes from Clifton Mount Estate, the largest coffee estate in Blue Mountain. This family has worked this land for two centuries and is the only farm in Jamaica with the Rainforest Alliance certification mark. This mark can only be obtained by meeting sustainable agriculture system standards, and its barrels bear the rainforest certification logo, which is why Front Street chose this estate's Blue Mountain coffee.

Authentic Blue Mountain coffee can be identified by the following three standards: (the export company designated by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board), (the only origin that packs green beans in wooden barrels), and (the frog rainforest certification on the barrel lid).

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Indonesian PWN Golden Mandheling Coffee Beans

Country: Indonesia Region: Sumatra, Aceh, Gayo Mountain Altitude: 1100-1600m Variety: Ateng Processing: Wet-hulled Flavor: Baked toast, nuts, pine, caramel, herbal

This Golden Mandheling from Front Street is PWN's newest product launched in recent months. Unlike the previous PWN Golden Mandheling, this latest batch comes from the Gayo Mountain region of Aceh, Sumatra, whereas the earlier one was from the Lake Tawar region of Sumatra. According to Front Street's cupping and brewing of this latest Golden Mandheling, compared with the previous version, the baked toast flavor is more prominent and the mouthfeel is fuller.

As Indonesia's number one representative of quality Golden Mandheling, PWN differs from ordinary Mandheling in its bean selection: defective beans undergo four rounds of hand sorting, and only the premium coffee beans left are sent to the processing plant. This removes off-flavors and earthy notes from the flavor, making the cup cleaner while retaining Indonesia's distinctive herbal notes—a wonderfully unforgettable experience.

Indonesian Mandheling is also one of the most representative coffees on the coffee market today. Front Street considers it the fullest and most robust in flavor of all coffee varieties, so it has been imported for all you coffee fans to taste.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Red Label Geisha

Country: Panama Region: Boquete (Hacienda La Esmeralda) Altitude: 1700m Variety: Geisha Processing: Natural Flavor: Rose, honeysuckle, sweet potato, grapefruit, lemon, black tea, sucrose

Among the most sought-after coffees in recent years, Geisha certainly holds a place. The most famous champion of Geisha coffee is undoubtedly Hacienda La Esmeralda, which brought it to prominence. When the estate first discovered Geisha, it felt its flavor differed from other coffees in the Panama region—Geisha leaned more toward orange and floral notes—so it began researching it and sent it to competitions. Geisha lived up to expectations and won the coffee competition championship, becoming famous overnight. Based on this, the estate classified the Geisha coffee trees according to the microclimates of different plots—namely the Red Label Geisha, Green Label Geisha, and Blue Label Geisha seen in Front Street's shop.

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Among the three, Red Label Geisha is the most expensive, because its coffee beans are selected from Geisha fruit grown in the highest-altitude areas of Hacienda La Esmeralda, further subdivided by specific plot, and are the coffee beans sent to the Hacienda La Esmeralda auction with cupping scores above 90. The quality is exceptional, so the price is naturally high.

Green Label and Red Label Geisha share the same altitude; the difference is that Green Label is a blend of beans from two areas of Hacienda La Esmeralda and did not participate in the auction, so its price is relatively lower. Blue Label Geisha, meanwhile, is made from a blend of coffee fruit from lower altitudes and from three plots of Hacienda La Esmeralda, making it the most affordable of the three.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Ethiopian Washed Gotiti Coffee Beans

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Country: Ethiopia Region: Yirgacheffe Altitude: 1900-2300m Variety: Local heirloom varieties Processing: Natural Flavor: Citrus, black tea, floral, cream, caramel, almond

Ethiopia is certainly indispensable among the origins holding a major share of the coffee market. Among them, coffee from the Yirgacheffe region has won over coffee lovers worldwide with its distinctive citrus-lemon notes and pleasant fruit acidity. As Front Street's previous articles have also mentioned, Yirgacheffe was originally just a small town within Ethiopia's Sidama region, and was separated out on its own because of its unique flavor—which shows just how special it is.

According to Front Street's understanding, the Gotiti Cooperative in the Yirgacheffe region was originally part of the Worka Cooperative under the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). Later, as people pursued traceability of green coffee beans, single origins were discovered one by one by coffee hunters around the world. In 2012, Gotiti, with about 300 farmers, became independent and established the Gotiti Cooperative. Gotiti village was the first village area to become independent, and many smallholder farmers had originally been members of the Worka Cooperative, so their production skills were naturally solid.

That is why Front Street brings this washed Gotiti coffee bean from Yirgacheffe to coffee fans for tasting—lovers of citrus-lemon acidity must not miss it. This Gotiti uses the washed processing method, giving it a fresher, brighter mouthfeel, and washing also better highlights its flavor characteristics.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Ethiopian Sidama Huakui Coffee Beans

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Country: Ethiopia Region: Hambela Altitude: 2250-2350 Variety: Local heirloom varieties Processing: Natural Flavor: Rose, cream strawberry, citrus, passion fruit, oolong tea

The well-known specialty coffee bean Huakui comes from Ethiopia's Guji region. The Guji region originally belonged to the Sidama region, and later became an independent coffee region because of its outstanding flavor, though many people still classify Huakui coffee beans under the Sidama region. Front Street has tried coffee beans from many regions of Ethiopia, including Yirgacheffe, which stands alongside Sidama as one of Ethiopia's two major specialty coffee regions. Front Street compared the coffee beans of Yirgacheffe and Sidama and could clearly taste their respective flavor characteristics. As Ethiopian beans, their most basic commonality is bright fruit acidity: Yirgacheffe's acidity leans toward citrus-lemon notes with a hint of jasmine; Sidama's acidity leans toward strawberry jam and passion fruit notes, accompanied by a creamy quality.

Huakui first came to coffee fans' attention in 2017, when Ethiopian green bean company DW sent its coffee beans to the TOH (the Taste Of Harvest) competition hosted by the African Coffee Association, and its natural batch won the TOH Ethiopia championship outright. That batch of green beans was imported that year by Beijing green bean trader "Hongshun International," and was named "Huakui" because of its champion status.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Ethiopian Natural Red Cherry Coffee Beans

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Country: Ethiopia Region: Yirgacheffe Altitude: 2300m Variety: Local heirloom varieties Processing: Natural Flavor: Berry, lemon, strawberry, fermented wine aroma

This coffee bean from Front Street also comes from Ethiopia, and differs from the previous two beans in that it originates from the "Red Cherry Project" led by the Dutch company Trabocca, with half the funding sponsored by the Dutch government. Since 2005, the project has cooperated with numerous small coffee cooperatives, encouraging and assisting producers to improve washed, semi-washed, natural, or other experimental processing methods to enhance coffee quality. Before each harvest season, Trabocca invites selected smallholder producer organizations to take part in producing micro-lot coffee, with 100% ripe red coffee cherries carefully hand-picked in multiple passes (hence the name Red Cherry Project). This creates a win-win situation: farmers provide premium coffee beans, Trabocca purchases them at high prices, and consumers get to taste excellent coffee.

The coffee beans of the Red Cherry Project are remarkably similar in spirit to Kopi Luwak, except that Red Cherry involves manually hand-selecting 100% ripe premium fruit, whereas Kopi Luwak relies on the civet's keen sense of smell to select the sweetest, ripest premium fruit.

Coffee fruit that is 100% ripe is naturally of excellent quality. Front Street has imported this Red Cherry coffee bean for coffee fans to taste; its flavor performance is no inferior to the two Ethiopian coffee beans above, and compared with washed coffee beans, this natural Red Cherry also carries the fermented flavor of natural processing.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Brazil Queen Estate Coffee Beans

Country: Brazil Region: São Paulo State (Queen Estate) Altitude: 1400-1950m Variety: Yellow Bourbon Processing: Semi-natural / Natural Flavor: Nuts, cream, peanut, fermented fruit, sucrose

Front Street believes veteran coffee fans are no strangers to Queen Estate. Queen Estate belongs to the renowned Carvalho Dias family. The family's four major estates have won awards every year since the first Brazil COE competition in 1999, winning more than 12 times in 7 years, and in 2004 even sweeping champion, 9th place, 11th place, and more. Many estates large and small in Brazil have longed for a place for years without success, yet this family's estates have won multiple awards year after year. For example, Queen Estate's Fazenda Rainfa also has a glorious record: runner-up in 2000, third place in 2001, 29th place in 2005, and to date Queen Estate has won awards 3 times.

So this coffee bean's flavor performance is certainly no slouch. Front Street naturally would not miss such an excellent coffee bean and has imported it for Front Street's coffee fans to taste. This Brazil Queen Estate coffee bean has a quite pure flavor, presenting the typical nutty, creamy flavor of American coffees.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Colombia Sidra Coffee Beans

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Country: Colombia Region: Huila Altitude: 1700m Variety: Sidra Processing: Double anaerobic natural Flavor: Passion fruit, grape, dried apricot, citrus, fermented aroma

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) has several particularly popular Colombian coffees, and this Sidra is especially favored. Opening the coffee bean can, the aroma of grapes and fermentation rushes out, rich and wonderful, with a juicy mouthfeel in the flavor. That is why Front Street recommends it as one of the ten must-drink coffee beans for all you coffee fans to taste.

According to Front Street's understanding, the double anaerobic fermentation used for this coffee bean is a method that has been used more often in recent years. It mimics red wine processing: the process involves injecting carbon dioxide into a sealed container to expel oxygen, slowing the breakdown of sugars in the coffee mucilage in an oxygen-free environment, with pH also dropping more slowly, extending fermentation time and thereby developing better sweetness and a more balanced flavor.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Honduras Sherry

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Country: Honduras Region: Marcala (Moca Estate) Altitude: 1500-1700m Variety: Caturra, Catuai, Pacas Processing: Fine washed + whiskey barrel fermentation Flavor: Vanilla, cream, fermented wine aroma, dark chocolate

This Honduras Sherry coffee bean from Front Street is likewise one of Front Street's most popular specialty-processing coffee beans. It uses whiskey barrel fermentation and carries a fermented wine aroma in its flavor, making it deeply loved by coffee fans who enjoy drinking. Front Street has also included this coffee bean in its top ten finest coffee bean recommendations for everyone.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Kenya Little Tomato Coffee Beans

Country: Kenya Region: Thika (Asali Processing Plant) Altitude: 1750m Variety: SL28, SL34 Processing: K72 washed Flavor: Cherry tomato, dried plum, snow pear, caramel, plum

Kenya is also one of Africa's most representative coffee regions. Although it is adjacent to Ethiopia and likewise known for excellent bright acidity, unlike Ethiopia's citrus-lemon acidity, Kenyan coffee distinctively presents cherry tomato acidity, which makes it stand out among numerous specialty coffee beans.

全球顶尖精品咖啡豆品牌盘点 手冲阿拉比卡蓝山单品豆精选推荐

Kenyan specialty coffee's distinctive acidity is closely related to its outstanding processing method. Ordinary washed processing selects highly ripe coffee fruit, removes the skin and pulp, then soaks it in a fermentation tank to remove the mucilage, a process that rarely exceeds 36 hours—but Kenya's fermentation time lasts as long as 72 hours, after which it is dried until the moisture content drops to 12%. Front Street believes Kenya's distinctive washed processing better enables the coffee beans to express bright acidity and a full, juicy mouthfeel.

The above are the ten coffee beans and related brief notes Front Street recommends for all you coffee fans. If you want to learn more about coffee origins, you can also read other related articles from Front Street.
