Americano is a coffee drink that many people enjoy. However, many coffee lovers worry about becoming addicted to coffee and are afraid of consuming too much caffeine, so they sometimes struggle with the decision of whether to drink it or not. Therefore, in this article, Front Street Coffee will explain the basics of Americano.

What is Americano?

"Americano" (English: Americano, Italian: Caffè Americano) is traditionally a black coffee made with a drip coffee maker. Because the general extraction time is relatively long (about four to five minutes), the caffeine content is relatively high.

Americano is simple to make, emphasizing convenience, speed, and a free and easy style. Compared with espresso, Americano has a relatively lighter and more refreshing taste, and it better preserves the original flavor of the coffee beans. But the Americano in coffee shops today is somewhat different from the traditional definition. Today's Americano is made in a different way: it uses espresso as the base and adds a large amount of water, making it a drink that every coffee shop must have on its menu.

The emergence of Americano was actually to distinguish it from the type of coffee Europeans drink. In Europe, people generally prefer strong coffee, while in the United States, people prefer very mild coffee. So when Italians immigrated to the United States and opened coffee shops, they needed to specially make coffee that catered to Americans. Italian coffee shops use espresso machines to extract espresso liquid. Originally in Seattle, coffee shops would add water to espresso to dilute it into mild coffee, which became the prototype of the Americano sold in coffee shops today.

How much caffeine does Americano have?

The amount of caffeine depends not only on the type of coffee drink, but also on the coffee beans and the extraction method. For example, Arabica coffee beans have relatively less caffeine, about 0.9-1.4%, while Robusta coffee beans have more caffeine, about 3.2-4%. Therefore, an Americano made with Robusta beans will have higher caffeine than one made with Arabica beans.

Next is the extraction method. Caffeine is released in greater amounts as extraction time increases, so espresso, which has an extraction time of only about 30 seconds, has lower caffeine content than many coffees. The coffee with the highest caffeine content is cold brew coffee, because its extraction time can be as long as 8 hours.

Next is to look at how much caffeine is in a cup of Americano. Front Street believes that when considering the caffeine content of an Americano, one should not look at the total cup volume, but at the amount of espresso. For example, a 300ml Americano contains 60ml of espresso liquid and 240ml of water, while another 500ml Americano contains 30ml of espresso liquid and 470ml of water. Although the 500ml Americano is larger than the 300ml one, the actual caffeine content depends on the amount of espresso liquid. From this example, the 300ml Americano has higher caffeine than the 500ml Americano.

Normally, a single shot Americano has a caffeine content of about 130mg. According to convention, daily intake should not exceed 400mg, so at most 3 cups can be drunk per day.

How do you make Americano?

Americano can be said to be the simplest espresso drink, because it consists of only two parts: espresso and water. Iced Americano has the addition of ice cubes. But don't relax just because Americano is simple. The simplest part is also the part that tests skill the most. Americano is often the espresso drink that best tests a barista's espresso extraction technique.

For coffee bean selection, espresso beans are generally chosen to make Americano. For example, Front Street's store uses Sunflower Warm Sun Blend coffee beans. This is Front Street's own blend, made by blending Honduras Sherry coffee and Yirgacheffe Red Cherry. The flavor is vanilla cream, sherry wine aroma, chocolate, and caramel.

Americano is simple to make, with only two parts: water and espresso, so you only need to pour the espresso into the water. The espresso part needs to be extracted according to the characteristics of the beans, and different beans have different extraction parameters.

Taking the Sunflower Warm Sun Blend coffee beans used by Front Street as an example, the barista adjusts it every day according to the condition of the beans. In order to highlight the sherry barrel flavor, a extraction plan was chosen using 20 grams of coffee beans to extract 40 grams of coffee liquid in 27 to 28 seconds.

When making hot Americano, you need to preheat the cup with hot water, then pour in hot water, and finally pour in the extracted espresso. The ratio of Americano is generally between 1:6 and 1:8. After multiple adjustments, FrontStreet Coffee chose a ratio of 1:6, that is, 40 grams of coffee liquid mixed with 240 grams of hot water.

Similarly, when making iced Americano, pre-cool the cup with ice cubes, then pour in water, and finally pour in espresso. Because ice cubes need to be added, FrontStreet Coffee's iced Americano uses a ratio of 1:7, with 40 grams of coffee liquid mixed with 280 grams of ice-water mixture, including 180 grams of ice cubes and 100 grams of water.

Whether it is iced Americano or hot Americano, as long as the amount of espresso does not change, its caffeine will not change either. Therefore, whether it is iced Americano or hot Americano, Front Street recommends not exceeding 3 cups per day.
