Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda
It rose to fame after participating in the Panama coffee bean cupping competition in 2004, and has since won the Panama coffee cupping competition championship for many consecutive years.
In 1964, Swedish-American financier Rudolph A. Peterson retired and moved to Panama, purchasing Hacienda La Esmeralda in Boquete, which was initially mainly operated as a dairy business. He had served as president of Bank of America and was quite influential in the financial world. Rudolph originally bought Hacienda La Esmeralda just for vacation and retirement living, and probably never expected that this estate would one day become world-renowned and even become a benchmark for Panama's specialty coffee estates.
In 1973, his son Price Peterson returned to Boquete after earning a doctorate in neurochemistry in the United States to help his father manage the farm.
After Price took over, based on altitude and microclimate, combined with cupping performance and cultivated varieties, he divided the market into three major brands for sales (Esmeralda Special, Diamond Mountain grows, Palmyra), and starting in 2012 added Geisha, forming four major brands.
【Hacienda La Esmeralda】includes 4 farms: Canas Verdes, El Velo, Jaramillo, and Palmira. All coffee beans are sent to these 4 farms for post-processing. The first farm purchased by the Peterson family, the estate owners, was Palmira.
Hacienda La Esmeralda Red Label, Green Label, Blue Label Geisha
After years of experimentation, Hacienda La Esmeralda discovered that only Geisha beans harvested from coffee trees growing above 1,400 meters in altitude can display the special flavors that Geisha beans should have.
Therefore, the main grading is based primarily on growing altitude, supplemented by actual cupping results, dividing Geisha beans into "Red, Green, and Blue Label" grades.

Hacienda La Esmeralda holds its own global auction every year, which is also an annual highlight of the specialty coffee world. Red Label Geisha | 2018 Hacienda La Esmeralda auction Geisha, the story of Geisha's discovery.
At this time every mid-year, green coffee buyers from around the world interested in that year's premium Geisha beans will refer to the scores of competing beans before the auction and, based on their own budgets, try to secure their ideal coffee lots. When bidding opens, everyone is on edge, boldly making offers, afraid that after missing out on delicious coffee beans they'll have to wait another agonizing year.
Front Street Esmeralda Boquete Select Green Label Geisha does not participate in the auction, but is equally high quality and slightly cheaper. Buyers who purchase Red Label can priority-purchase Green Label.
On the contrary, because it does not participate in the auction, its price is not as expensive as Red Label Geisha, and its value for money is quite high.
This Geisha from Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda grows in the Boquete region at an altitude of 1,600-1,800 meters. When we conducted our first test roast,
September 30, clear skies, roastery temperature 27°C, humidity 40%, roasting Green Label Geisha. What we received was the 2018 crop Green Label Geisha from 1,600-1,800m, high hardness and high density, plump in shape with thick and elongated beans and pointed ends. We chose a drop temperature of 170°C, first crack began at 8'00", reduced the flame to 80°C, adjusted the damper to 3.5, developed for 1'30" after first crack, dropped at 193.5°C. At drop there was oolong tea aroma, and the beans were dropped at a dense mid-first-crack roast level.
Cupping results: the entry acidity is delicate and soft. Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda【Front Street Green Label Geisha】has rich flavor layers, bursting with floral and fruity aromas the moment it hits the palate! As the temperature changes, the flavors shift from jasmine and citrus to berries, honeysuckle, then to fruit candy and oolong tea aroma, finishing with a cantaloupe aftertaste.
Peach-like sweetness and honey aroma, fresh and comfortable, bright yet balanced, with extremely strong aroma layering. The fruity sweetness and lingering finish are intense, and on entry it carries strawberry notes and a strong yet gentle citrus-lemon acidity. It doesn't taste like coffee as you know it at all. Overall, it won't lose to any Red Label Geisha; the only shortcoming is that its body is slightly weaker than Red Label, but this does not affect its rich flavor layers and the very easily distinguishable Geisha lineage .
