AeroPressThe operating methods are varied, with no absolute rules—use your imagination to make a good cup of coffee. Use it however you like. It is precisely because of the AeroPress's varied playstyles, its operability, and the controllability of coffee extraction factors that the World Aeropress Championships now exists.

The Extraction Principle of the AeroPress

In fact, the AeroPress is not only a highly ingenious creative achievement but also a practical product. It combines the immersion extraction method of the French press, the paper filtration of pour-over coffee, and the rapid, pressure-based extraction principle of espresso. So theoretically, coffee brewed with the AeroPress can simultaneously possess the richness of espresso, the clarity of pour-over coffee, and the smoothness of a French press.

The Flavor Characteristics of AeroPress Coffee

Clean and smooth mouthfeel: The AeroPress's paper filter is dense, so the filtered coffee is very clean. Using suitable warm water plus appropriate pressure, you can brew a coffee that is low in acidity and free of bitterness, yet full of flavor. Rich flavor: Complete immersion brewing can maximize and evenly extract the coffee, fully preserving the coffee's flavors.

Intense body: A perfect cup of coffee is made in 1 minute, with the actual press time being only 20 seconds. But because of the pressure extraction during the pressing process, you can instead get a fuller body than other immersion coffees.

The AeroPress is probably the simplest coffee brewing device to use apart from the French press. If you dig deeper into how this thing works, you can unlock many unexpected variations—it's comparable to a "jack-of-all-trades." The AeroPress was officially released by the American company AEROBIE in 2005, and with its advantages of being easy to use, efficient, and producing delicious coffee, it caused a strong reaction as soon as it hit the market. This entirely new coffee-making device was invented by Alan Adler, a mechanical engineering lecturer at Stanford University. With the holding of the World Aeropress Championship (WAC), the AeroPress has become known to more and more people.

Its structure is similar to a syringe. When using it, you put ground coffee and hot water into its "barrel," then press down the plunger, and the coffee will flow through the filter paper into the container. The principle combines the immersion extraction method of a French press, the paper filtration of drip (pour-over) coffee, and the rapid, pressure-based extraction principle of espresso. Through different combinations of grind size, water temperature, pressing speed, and steeping time and rhythm, you can brew coffee with a wild mouthfeel similar to espresso, or brew coffee with a refreshing, layered mouthfeel similar to pour-over. This "jack-of-all-trades" ability has its own unique strengths for expressing the flavor of a single bean.

Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) shares how to make a cup of AeroPress coffee using the inverted method!

You need to prepare: AeroPress, AeroPress-specific paper filters (or a metal filter), 18g of freshly roasted Front Street Huilan coffee beans, hot water (94-98°C), a pouring kettle (preferably a gooseneck kettle), a coffee cup, a grinder (recommended)

Brewing parameters:

Grind setting: 90% pass rate through a No. 20 sieve (finer than regular pour-over grind)
Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:11 (about 200ml)
Water temperature: 90°C
Extraction method: inverted

We can place two circular paper filters on the filter cap in advance, then wet them with water so they stick.
‍‍‍‍‍‍
1. Assemble the plunger and the chamber, then press the plunger down to around mark ④ and flip it upside down!
2. Pour in the ground Front Street Huilan coffee powder, then add an equal amount of hot water and start timing!
3. Use a stirring stick to stir the coffee powder in the chamber for a full ten seconds. (Slowly in circles)
4. Attach the filter cap with the fitted paper filter onto the chamber.
5. Then secure the prepared container onto it.
6. When the time reaches one minute, flip it over, then begin pressing downward to "press out" the coffee.

The extraction is now complete, taking about 1 minute and 20 seconds. The inverted method is more stable than the upright method, which can greatly reduce the difficulty for beginners. The Front Street Huilan coffee extracted this way tastes mellow and delicious, with a very full nutty aroma—very nice~
