How Will Brazil Map Coffee Farms for EU Rules?

Brazil's Coffee Exporters Council, Cecafe, together with credit company Serasa Experian, launched the Cafes do Brasil platform and held a seminar in Sao Paulo to help exporters meet the EU Deforestation Regulation. The platform uses remote sensing and geolocation data to analyze forest protection, cultivation, and deforestation alerts across the coffee supply chain.

About 100 people attended, including 41 council members responsible for roughly 90 percent of Brazil's coffee shipments to the EU. Serasa Experian will train members on the platform's data and on combining the Farm Environmental Registry for deforestation analysis. Similar mapping has been tested on soybeans, corn, and cotton, and it aims to refine socio-environmental reporting for the production of coffee beans.

In response to the stringent requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafe), together with credit company Serasa Experian, has launched the Cafes do Brasil platform and held a seminar in São Paulo to help exporters master traceability tools. The platform uses remote sensing technology and geolocation data to dynamically analyze ESG indicators such as forest protection, agricultural cultivation, and deforestation alerts in production areas, ensuring full traceability throughout the coffee supply chain. Among the approximately 100 participants, 41 council members are responsible for about 90% of Brazil's coffee shipments to the EU, and their compliance practices will significantly enhance the transparency and international reputation of Brazilian coffee.

Recently, the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafe), together with credit institution Serasa Experian, held a seminar in São Paulo with local producers, centered on the Brazilian coffee traceability platform. The platform, jointly developed by the two organizations, aims to provide a basis for export companies to obtain subsidies, while officially launching the Cafes do Brasil platform to prove that the coffee shipped complies with the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

According to the organizers, Serasa Experian's professional team will assist council members in becoming familiar with and using the platform, focusing on core resources, available data, and how to combine the Farm Environmental Registry (CRA) for deforestation analysis. The seminar also covered practical cases from Cecafe properties and discussed the precise generation of data related to coffee farms, in order to address current data bottlenecks in complying with EUDR rules, the available deforestation figures, and the submission of the latest data to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).

In fact, similar approaches have previously been tested on crops such as soybeans, corn, and cotton, confirming the strategic value of mapping coffee plantations. Cecafe's director-general said that such mapping will refine socio-environmental analysis and strengthen sustainability information throughout the occupation and evolution of the entire coffee production belt. In addition, the overall vision of the Brazilian coffee sector will help improve trust and cooperation with importers, European coffee growers, the European Commission, and the EU Space Programme Agency, among others.

Brazil Launches Cafes do Brasil Traceability Platform to Respond to the EU's New Deforestation-Free Import Rules

The traceability platform will use geolocation data provided by coffee growers to offer members a personalized platform based on remote sensing solutions, collecting and cross-referencing data related to ESG standards, thereby supporting multidimensional dynamic analysis, such as the level of forest protection, agricultural cultivation conditions, and deforestation alerts in production areas, ensuring that products are traceable throughout the entire production chain.

In terms of risk management, the platform will also monitor the socio-environmental compliance of production areas daily and provide real-time updates to participating exporters, issuing alerts whenever anomalies occur, in order to address socio-environmental responsibility issues. This will bring greater transparency to the Brazilian coffee industry and enhance the reputation of Brazilian coffee.

Among the 100 participants in this seminar, 41 are council members who are also exporters. These members account for about 90% of Brazil's coffee shipments to the EU and 41% of the country's total exports. Therefore, the tool supported by this seminar has become the best way for them to comply with EU regulations. Serasa Experian's tailored platform for Cecafe-related exporters joining the initiative is crucial, as it can align with environmental guidelines defined by global companies, governments, and other stakeholders.
