Coffee Equipment | Is the AeroPress a toy or a tool? What is the principle behind AeroPress coffee extraction? How do you use an AeroPress to make black coffee?

Without any hints, Front Street Coffee believes it would be hard for anyone to imagine that this syringe-like gadget is actually used to make coffee. That's right, it's the little coffee "toy" that's incredibly popular in the coffee world—the AeroPress.

图片

The reason Front Street Coffee calls it a "toy" isn't because it can't brew coffee consistently, but because its versatility is just too high! Beyond adjusting parameters to change the coffee extraction, it can also be used in different configurations to make coffee, adding a huge amount of fun to the brewing process. So every year at theAeroPress Championship, we always see competitors brewing coffee in all sorts of creative ways.

And to understand why the AeroPress is so unique, we have to mention its inventor—Alan Adler(Alan Adler). Mr. Alan Adler was a mechanical engineering lecturer at Stanford, Caltech, Princeton, and other universities. Beyond teaching, he was also an inventor who participated in the design of submarine and nuclear reactor control systems, military aircraft instrument systems, and optical systems, holding over forty patents.
Not only that, he also frequently invented devices for his sports equipment company, Aerobie. In particular, theAerobie flying ring he invented and launched in 1984, along withAerobie Pro , set a world record for the farthest thrown disc with a distance of 406 meters.

From the brief introduction above by Front Street Coffee, you can see thatMr. Alan Adler had no significant connection to coffee in his early days. So why did he suddenly have the idea to create an AeroPress?
图片
Actually, like most inventors, his reason for inventing something was simple: I think XX is not good/inconvenient, so I'll make something more convenient and better myself.
Before the AeroPress was born, the mainstream coffee extraction methods were basically pour-over and espresso. Although these methods can produce delicious coffee, they not only require the brewer to have a deep understanding of extraction, but the whole process is also tedious and complicated. SoMr. Alan Adler thought he would create a device that could easily make delicious coffee. Starting in 2003, the old man delved into coffee extraction theory, and then in 2005, the AeroPress was born!

From its appearance, we can see that the AeroPress looks different from traditional coffee equipment. Not to mention back then—even today it's quite unconventional—but that's just Mr. Alan's style. With this appearance and the fact that his original company mainly made sports equipment, many people were not optimistic about the AeroPress at the time. At the 2005 Seattle coffee expo, the AeroPress didn't become a hit despite Mr. Alan's fame, and it ended quietly.
But the old man wasn't discouraged. At the time, he told his team:"It will make history and surpass all the products we've ever sold."After the expo ended, he started sharing introductory posts and videos about the AeroPress online, and they became a huge hit!Everyone was very interested in this unique coffee device. Sobefore long, the AeroPress introduction video exceeded 7 million views. Thanks to this, the AeroPress began to become a star in the coffee world.

Although it took only two years from idea to realization for the AeroPress, over forty versions were iterated during that time before finally settling on this syringe-like design. And the working principle of the AeroPress is hidden in its name—AeroPress "Areopress" - Aero + Press - "through air pressure."
The AeroPress is a coffee extraction tool that combines immersion and pressure. Its structure is mainly divided into three parts: the filter cap, the chamber, and the plunger. At the start of brewing, immersion is used to soak the coffee, and then pressure is applied by pushing down the plunger, allowing the flavor compounds and coffee liquid to be released more quickly.

As Front Street Coffee mentioned at the beginning of the article, the AeroPress has very diverse brewing methods. Beyond adjusting parameters to change the extraction, there are also different configurations to play with. For example, "standard pressure" and "inverted pressure" are the two extraction configurations that everyone loves to talk about in AeroPress brewing. Sincein the article "Standard and Inverted Pressure for AeroPress,"Front Street Coffee has explained this in detail, we won't go into too much detail here.

By 2008, the AeroPress had become very popular. Because its brewing methods are so rich, it's often jokingly called the world's most fun coffee device. Many people wanted to know the best brewing recipe for the AeroPress, including a deep AeroPress enthusiast and renowned Nordic coffee roaster—Tim Wendelboe. So,Tim Wendelboe and a few local AeroPress enthusiasts gathered in a small room and held the first AeroPress competition.
At the time, there were only three competitors, andTim Wendelboe served as the judge. Although it was small in scale, such a competition gave the AeroPress a huge amount of exposure. Gradually, the event grew bigger and bigger, and what started as a three-person contest has now evolved into a world-class event. And the AeroPress, just as Mr. Alan said back then, successfully made history and became the best-selling product in their company.

Alright, without further ado, let Front Street Coffee share how to make a delicious cup of coffee using the AeroPress!

AeroPress Brewing
Since Front Street Coffee's AeroPress extraction recipe is relatively quick, we can use a finer grind and a higher water temperature. Like all coffee equipment, it's suitable for brewing all types of coffee beans. So if we want a cup with a brighter acidity and floral-fruity notes, we can choose light-roasted coffee beans; if we want a cup with a more bitter, rich, and full-bodied taste, we can choose dark-roasted coffee beans.
Here at Front Street Coffee, we want a cup that's sweet and tangy with a full, juicy mouthfeel, so we've chosen the Front Street Coffee Finca La Divisa · Sidra from our bean list. The extraction parameters are as follows:
Dose: 15g
Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:14
Water temperature: 94°C
Grind size: 8 on the Ek43, 85% passing through a No. 20 sieve
Method: Inverted pressure
First, we assemble the AeroPress plunger and chamber, and set it upside down.

Add the coffee grounds and hot water in sequence.

Take out a stirring tool and stir! Just stir for 30 seconds, then start the timer.

图片

When the time reaches one minute, we attach the filter cap to the chambersnap on the cup, and gently press up to remove excess air from the AeroPress, then flip the whole AeroPress over in one go!

图片

Then we need to start applying pressure to extract the coffee. There are two things to note here! First, when applying pressure, don't rush—apply even force and press down slowly. Second, make sure to find a sturdy cup and a stable table. Because the force applied will be relatively strong, if the cup and table aren't reliable, they may not be able to support it, leading to some undesirable situations.

Once we've pressed all the way to the bottom, the AeroPress coffee is officially done!

Through tasting, we can perceive明显的 grape, passion fruit, apricot, and other fruit flavors, with a subtle fermented note. The finish is dried fruit and citrus, and the overall cup is very balanced.
Compared to the Sidra made with pour-over, the Sidra made with the AeroPress has a fuller body. Because the AeroPress's filtration performance isn't as high as pour-over filter paper, the coffee's oils and some fine particles end up in the cup along with the coffee, enhancing its quality and aroma. Because of this, the overall cleanliness isn't as high, but it's still very delicious. Fun! Delicious!
