Whether Mandheling coffee tastes good or not is closely tied to the quality of the green beans themselves, the roaster’s interpretation, whether the coffee beans are freshly roasted, and whether suitable parameters are used for extraction.

What are Mandheling coffee beans?

Mandheling coffeeis an Arabica coffee originally from the Mandailing region near the Bukit Barisan mountains in North Sumatra. What we now see as Mandheling refers to Typica or other varietals grown in the mountainous areas around Lake Toba. Depending on the region and the green bean supplier, these names are used to distinguish Mandheling from different areas.

Front Street Coffee has previously brought in 4 single-origin Mandheling coffees: Lintong Mandheling, Aged Mandheling, Aceh Sumatra Tiger Mandheling, and PWN Golden Mandheling. Currently, two are available for purchase on Front Street Coffee’s Tmall store: “Front Street Indonesia Mandheling” and “Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling.”

Mandheling coffee bean processing method

Mandheling’s uniqueness is inseparable from its processing method—wet hulling. This method emerged because Indonesia’s year-round humidity is between 70% and 90%, with heavy annual rainfall. In pursuit of greater economic returns, Indonesian farmers developed the Giling Basah (wet hulled) processing method.

After the coffee cherries are harvested and sorted, they are depulped, then placed in a tank with clean water and fermented for 24 to 36 hours to remove some of the mucilage. The moist green coffee beans are evenly spread out to dry until they reach a semi-dry, semi-moist state, after which the parchment layer is removed, exposing the green beans completely, and then they are sun-dried. When the green beans’ moisture content drops to 10% to 12%, they are appropriately bagged for storage.

The wet-hulled process is faster than other processing methods, but this processing method makes the beans more prone to being crushed and damaged, forming small gaps and creating a hoof-like shape, commonly known as sheep’s hoof beans. This bean shape has also become another characteristic feature of Mandheling coffee beans.

Mandheling coffeeflavor characteristics

Many Indonesian commercial coffee beans have a downside: the varieties are mixed with Robusta genes, which makes the coffee’s inherent flavor relatively rough and not very pleasant to drink. Mandheling, however, is mainly a hybrid variety based on Arabica genes. Combined with Indonesia’s customary unique processing method—wet hulling—the coffee gains a distinct, subdued character. After medium-dark roasting, it expresses mellow notes such as herbs, spices, and cocoa, leaving an impression of low acidity and high body. These distinctive descriptors are exactly the regional flavor of Sumatra.

1. Entry-level Mandheling: Front Street Indonesia Mandheling G1 Coffee

Lintong Mandheling, a daily-drinker bean, belongs to Indonesia’s highest green bean grade, G1. The medium-dark roast highlights its rich nutty character, with a hint of melon aroma in the finish. As it cools, herbal notes emerge. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and the aroma is saturated. It can be brewed by pour-over, moka pot, espresso SOE, or drip bags, making it very suitable for beginners trying Mandheling coffee for the first time.

2. Luxury-level Mandheling: Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling Coffee

Front Street Golden Mandheling comes from Mount Gayo in Aceh, Sumatra, grown at an altitude of 1,100–1,600 meters. The coffee variety is Ateng, processed by the wet-hulled method. Its flavor profile is: spices, herbs, caramel, pine, nuts, chocolate.

Unlike other Mandheling coffees, Front Street Golden Mandheling coffee beans undergo G1 and 3 times hand sorting during green bean selection, so the Golden Mandheling beans look very uniform in size. The specification for Golden Mandheling is 18 screen or above, with fewer than 3 defective beans (in a 300g green bean sample), belonging to the highest grade, G1. The color is on the darker green side, and the shape is neat flat beans. After strict screening, Golden Mandheling not only lacks the earthy off-flavors unique to ordinary Mandheling, but also tastes cleaner and more transparent, with a stronger sweetness and aroma.
