Many people think that mocha coffee and latte coffee are quite similar. Although both belong to Italian coffee and use Espresso and milk, there are still significant differences between the two in taste and preparation ratios. Today, Front Street Coffee will talk about the differences between mocha coffee and latte coffee.

Latte originates from the transliteration of the Italian word Latte. Latte coffee refers to coffee made by mixing a certain proportion of milk into espresso, and it is a type of fancy coffee. Latte coffee has simple ingredients; it only needs espresso and milk, with no fixed ratio, and most often the ratio ranges from 1:5 to 1:8. Front Street Coffee uses a 1:6 ratio, with 40g of espresso liquid and 240g of milk added.

Espresso, also called Espreso, uses steam pressure to force hot water through coffee grounds, brewing a small serving of pure black coffee liquid that is strong and aromatic, with golden crema floating on top. We may rarely see it on cafe menus, but everyday Americano, latte, and cappuccino all involve it, and it can be said to be the soul of a coffee shop.

The prerequisite for making delicious espresso is choosing good coffee beans. If you like latte coffee with aromas such as roasted nuts and fried peanuts, Front Street Coffee's specialty blend, Front Street Coffee Queen's Estate, and Front Street Coffee Brazil Red Bourbon are recommended; if you like latte with a faint floral and fruity flavor, you can buy Front Street Coffee Strawberry Candy espresso Italian blend; if you pursue value for money even more, it is suggested to use Front Street Coffee Dark Cocoa Blend.

When serving hot latte, Front Street Coffee will add espresso liquid to a preheated coffee cup, then use the steam wand of an espresso machine to steam the milk. The milk temperature is best controlled at 55-65°C, so that it forms dense microfoam with moderate thickness, and then it is evenly integrated with the coffee liquid. The final latte art is the icing on the cake.

Because it is made only of espresso and fresh milk, latte allows you to directly feel the aroma of the coffee beans themselves and the fresh sweetness of the milk. Against the backdrop of Front Street Coffee Warm Sun Blend, Front Street Coffee hot latte presents the sweet aroma of chocolate liqueur, with flavors of vanilla, nuts, and berries, and is creamy and smooth.

Mocha coffee refers to a kind of Italian milk coffee with chocolate added. The vast majority of mocha coffees use chocolate sauce in their preparation, because chocolate sauce is convenient and quick and can be used directly without waiting for chocolate to melt! What needs to be known is that although chocolate sauce is very convenient, the key reason most friends cannot make mocha coffee well comes from it.

Because chocolate itself has a very rich bitterness, the more popular chocolate sauce products on the market all add a large amount of sugar during production to neutralize the bitterness and make it more acceptable. But because the sugar and chocolate have already merged into one, we cannot separate them and adjust the ratio independently. This also leads to the situation where, when the chocolate flavor is not strong enough, if you choose to continue adding chocolate sauce, although the chocolate flavor will increase, the sweetness will also surge at the same time.

Therefore, most merchants do not use only chocolate sauce to make mocha coffee. They also add other "seasonings" so that the mocha coffee retains its chocolate flavor while still being very drinkable. Many friends, because they are encountering it for the first time, do not realize the drawbacks of chocolate sauce, so they use only chocolate sauce in making mocha coffee! That's all right. Next, let Front Street Coffee share how to make a delicious cup of mocha coffee!

How should a delicious mocha coffee be made?

As mentioned earlier, mocha coffee is simply a chocolate-flavored Italian milk coffee. So what we need to do is very simple: make a milk coffee with sufficient chocolate concentration (flavor), while the proportion of sugar cannot be too high, just enough to neutralize the bitterness!

Likewise, we will still use chocolate sauce to make mocha coffee, because its sweetness and chocolate blend more naturally, and it does not taste too jarring when drinking. But in addition to chocolate sauce, Front Street Coffee will also use another ingredient to increase the chocolate concentration, namely: unsweetened cocoa powder.

The presence of unsweetened cocoa powder not only gives the coffee a richer flavor, but also greatly enhances the body, and because it contains no sugar, it does not increase sweetness. Therefore, it is the best choice for increasing chocolate concentration (melted dark chocolate can of course also work, but the process is more involved and takes longer). All right, without further ado, let's start making delicious mocha!

How do you make hot mocha coffee?

Since hot mocha and iced mocha differ slightly in preparation, Front Street Coffee will introduce them separately! The items and ingredients needed to make hot mocha are: 1 coffee cup, 1 mixing cup/bowl (optional), 1 strainer (optional), 1 portion of milk, 1 portion of espresso, chocolate sauce, and cocoa powder.

Step 1: Make the chocolate espresso base

First, let's make the chocolate espresso base! Add 15ml of chocolate sauce and 5g of unsweetened cocoa powder to the mixing cup. Because after many tests by Front Street Coffee, the chocolate mixture made with this ratio not only has suitable sweetness, but also an extremely rich chocolate flavor! Of course, friends who like it sweeter can slightly increase the amount of chocolate sauce, up to 20ml.

Then we extract a portion of espresso into the mixing cup, using the heat of the espresso along with stirring to melt and blend the chocolate sauce and cocoa powder.

Step 2: Strain out unmelted cocoa powder

After stirring is complete, we can pour it into the latte cup! When pouring, it is best to use a strainer to filter out the cocoa powder that has not completely melted, because they will clump together into larger pieces, and after straining, the drinking texture will be smoother!

Step 3: Sprinkle a small amount of cocoa powder on the surface

If you have a sifter, you can use it to sprinkle a little cocoa powder on the surface of this chocolate espresso base. This can make the finished mocha coffee release a more tempting chocolate aroma.

Step 4: Steam the milk

Just like making hot latte, the milk for hot mocha also needs to be steamed to a high temperature of 65°C to activate the sweetness of lactose. At the same time, the presence of microfoam will make the texture denser. Therefore, in the step of steaming the milk, the process is completely the same as for latte! Steam to 60~68°C, thin microfoam.

The ratio of milk to coffee is 1:4, that is, 50ml of base should be paired with 200ml of milk.

Step 5: Integration

After steaming is complete, we can begin integration! Friends who want latte art should note that because this base is too thick, its initial fluidity is not high, so we need to use more milk to integrate it and improve the fluidity of the surface. Only in this way can we better create beautiful latte art~

At this point, a delicious cup of mocha coffee is complete! It not only offers a great visual experience, but also tastes very pleasant. The rich and sweet chocolate, paired with the whiskey aroma and butter cookie notes brought by Warm Sun Blend, is altogether the taste of chocolate liqueur, and because of the presence of red cherry there is also a faint berry aroma, with a very rich layering!!!

How do you make iced mocha coffee?

For iced mocha, because we need to use ice cubes for cooling, we will sacrifice part of the milk to make room. And when the ice cubes melt, they will dilute the overall concentration, resulting in a thinner taste, so in the ingredients for the chocolate base, we need to increase them: raise the original 15ml of chocolate sauce to 20ml, and increase the unsweetened cocoa powder from the original 5g to 8g. By increasing the chocolate concentration, the taste can be corrected!

The preparation process for the chocolate coffee base is the same as for hot mocha. The rest is just combining the ingredients together! Add ice cubes (90g) and milk (160ml) to the prepared cup in order, and finally pour over the chocolate coffee base, and it's done!

Remember to stir before drinking, so that the milk and chocolate coffee blend better! If conditions permit, we can also add cream, milk cap, and other ingredients on the surface to give iced mocha coffee more layering and double the deliciousness!
