What Is Coffee From the Costa Rica Musician Series

The Costa Rica Musician Series is a set of coffees from Canet Estate in the Tarrazu region, named Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and Chopin by Taiwan Black Gold Green Coffee Company, which introduced the beans. Canet Estate itself did not create the names, and the labels do not use the musicians' full names, so no infringement is involved.

The naming exists because estate coffees sold only by origin and variety are hard to tell apart. Beethoven is washed processed, with red berry sweetness, citrus acidity, faint floral notes, and an almond aftertaste. Chopin is anaerobic honey processed, with floral aroma, fruit tea and berry gummy sweetness, and a rose-honey finish that suits a V60 pour-over.

Costa Rica Musician Series coffee beans have attracted the attention of many coffee lovers with their distinct flavor personalities and musician-inspired naming. These beans come from Canet Estate in the Tarrazu region, introduced by Taiwan Black Gold Green Coffee Company and given musician names. This article focuses on the processing methods and flavor characteristics of four beans—Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and Chopin—and also shares Front Street Coffee's roasting approach and V60 pour-over parameters to help readers gain a more complete understanding of how this coffee series expresses itself.

Previously, a friend asked Front Street Coffee whether the Costa Rica Musician Series coffee beans directly borrowing musicians' names would involve infringement. Actually, it would not, because the products do not use the musicians' full names. Although hearing these names naturally makes people associate them with the corresponding musicians, the names themselves are not something only musicians can exclusively use. So why did Canet Estate use musicians to name the coffee beans?

In fact, Canet Estate itself did not name the coffee beans; when selling, the estate only indicated the variety and processing method. But if coffee beans are named only by origin and variety, their appeal is diminished, and these beans are also fairly similar in variety and processing method, making them hard to distinguish. Therefore, when Taiwan Black Gold Green Coffee Company introduced Canet Estate's coffee beans, it designed stories and names for some of them, borrowing famous musicians' names to reflect the differences in flavor tone among the beans. Some are diligent, some gentle, some steady...

Costa Rica Musician Series Beethoven coffee beans are washed processed, with a fresh and lively flavor profile, featuring the sweet-tartness of red berries and the bright acidity of citrus fruits, accompanied by a faint floral aroma and an almond-like aftertaste. The overall flavor is like Beethoven's music, showing light, lively, and flowing characteristics.

Costa Rica Musician Series Chopin coffee beans are an anaerobic honey-processed coffee with a gentle, fresh flavor. Rich floral aromas linger in the mouth, and amid the sweet notes of fruit tea and berry gummies, there is a charming rose and honey-like sweetness. Just like Chopin's music, it is accessible, beautiful, and poetic.

Costa Rica Musician Series Mozart coffee beans use raisin honey processing, with a gentle and elegant flavor profile. The sweet-tartness of red berries is accompanied by subtle floral notes, combining the sweet-tartness of red berries with the splendor of flowers, while a raisin-like fermented quality makes the coffee's flavor appear more elegant. Like Mozart's music, it displays a delicate, subtle, bright, and beautiful style.

Costa Rica Musician Series Bach coffee beans are an anaerobic honey-processed coffee with a steady and solemn flavor profile. A berry-fermented aroma lingers in the mouth, and in the process, rose-like floral notes and a composite fruit juice sensation emerge, adding a sense of splendor to the overall flavor. Just like Bach's music, the melody is solemn and long, with a distant and lyrical temperament.

The four Costa Rica Musician Series coffee beans all come from Canet Estate, located in the town of San Marcos in the Tarrazu region, and owned by the family of the Robles brothers Leo, Elian, and Melvin. This area is also the most densely planted fruit-growing region in Costa Rica. Besides growing coffee trees, the estate mainly focuses on growing passion fruit.

Front Street Coffee currently sells three coffee beans: Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. After everyone places an order on Taobao, they will receive coffee beans within 5 days after roasting is completed. So if, when you get them, it has not yet been 3-4 days after roasting, and you are not in a hurry to drink them, you can leave them unopened in the original packaging for another 1-2 days. This is because within 4 days after roasting is completed, the coffee beans will have a dry sensation and a large amount of carbon dioxide inside them, and carbon dioxide will affect coffee extraction. In order to make the flavor and mouthfeel of the three Musician Series coffees more solid while retaining the fruity sweet-tart tone, Front Street Coffee's roaster uses a medium roast and discharges the beans at about 1 minute 45 seconds after the start of first crack.

For brewing, Front Street recommends using a V60 dripper, whose spiral rib design can effectively increase the coffee's layering. Brewing parameters: 15g coffee grounds, a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, medium-fine grind (about the size of fine granulated sugar / 78% passing rate on the China standard sieve), 90°C water temperature, with a three-stage circular pouring method:

First, use 30g of water to fully wet the coffee bed into a "hamburger" shape and bloom for 30s, then proceed to the second stage of brewing. For the second stage, Front Street uses a steady medium-fine stream of water poured in circles, pouring water to 125g at 55s on the timer, then stopping to wait until the water level drops to 2/3 of the coffee bed before pouring the third stage. For the third stage, Front Street continues to use a steady... 1'55".
