Blue Mountain Coffee vs. Blue Mountain Flavor: Arabica Coffee Brands Compared

Is Blue Mountain Coffee the Same as Blue Mountain Flavor?

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and the many products sold as Blue Mountain flavor or Blue Mountain blend are not the same thing. Real Blue Mountain comes from a specific mountain range in Jamaica, within the coffee-growing belt, with high altitude, island climate and volcanic soil, and it is subject to local certification and grading before export.

Many arabica coffee brands avoid printing the plain words Blue Mountain coffee on a label precisely because their beans never came from Jamaica, while less scrupulous sellers use the name anyway. Price is a rough filter: a genuinely traceable lot such as Clifton Mount Estate Blue Mountain No. 1 is sold with its estate, grade and roast details rather than as a flavor descriptor.

There are countless coffees on the market labeled "Blue Mountain," but genuine Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and "Blue Mountain flavor" or "Blue Mountain blend" are actually not the same thing at all. This article starts with the origin's altitude, certification system, and production limits to help you distinguish the real Blue Mountain coffee from the fake, and introduces the Clifton Mount Estate Blue Mountain No. 1 sold by Front Street Coffee, including its specifications, roasting approach, pour-over parameters, and flavor performance.

Have you ever really drunk Blue Mountain coffee (blue mountain coffee)? Don't rush to answer—think back to how much you spent on it at the time. For example, did the original price of 100 grams of Blue Mountain coffee beans exceed 140 yuan? Or, if you ordered a cup of Blue Mountain coffee in a shop, was the price higher than 50 yuan? If the answer is no, then you can basically conclude that what you drank was not authentic Blue Mountain coffee.

Today the words "Blue Mountain" have long been overused. Open any online shopping platform and search for coffee beans, and you'll be flooded with a whole bunch of Blue Mountain products. But there's a lot hidden behind this. If you pay attention to the product names, you'll notice they usually don't just say "Blue Mountain coffee," but instead call it "Blue Mountain flavor coffee beans" (blue mountain flavor coffee) or "Blue Mountain blend" (blue mountain blend), and so on.

At least legitimate coffee brands label it this way. Instead, some brands of unknown origin directly write Blue Mountain. The reason these big brands go out of their way to avoid the four words "Blue Mountain coffee" is that, strictly speaking, the products they sell cannot be considered Blue Mountain coffee.

Blue Mountain is actually a mountain in Jamaica (Jamaica). The local climate conditions are superior, making it a quite ideal coffee origin (coffee origin). This mountain range happens to fall within the coffee-growing belt (between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn), combining high altitude, an island-type climate, and volcanic soil, which is extremely favorable for the cultivation and growth of Arabica coffee. It is precisely for this reason that authentic Blue Mountain coffee is classified as specialty coffee (specialty coffee).

However, not all coffee produced in the Blue Mountains can be called Blue Mountain coffee. Only coffee produced within a specific altitude range has certification (certificated) eligibility, and the annual output is extremely limited, so most people cannot access it at all.

According to tradition, only coffee harvested at an altitude between 910 meters and 1,700 meters can be given the name "Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee" (areas above 1,700 meters in Jamaica are forest reserves and are not planted with coffee). The annual output is only 300 to 600 tons, so the price is naturally much higher than most coffee beans on the market.

Coffee produced at an altitude between 460 meters and 910 meters can only be called "Jamaica High Mountain Coffee." And coffee produced below 460 meters can only be called "Jamaica Prime Coffee" or "Jamaica Low Mountain Coffee."

It is famous but its output cannot keep up, so a large number of products sold under the name of Blue Mountain have appeared on the market. In order to maintain the quality and reputation of Blue Mountain coffee, the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board CIB designed and registered the "Blue Mountain Coffee" trademark and also established strict export and certification standards.

Are Blue Mountain Coffee and Blue Mountain Flavor the Same Thing? An Analysis of Jamaican Certification Standards and the Taste of Authentic Blue Mountain No. 1

Authentic Blue Mountain coffee comes with a certification certificate issued by the CIB, a certificate of origin or a proof certificate, and is 100% exported in wooden barrels. This not only gives consumers a basis for distinguishing authenticity, but also establishes the market prestige of Blue Mountain coffee.

The Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans currently sold by Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) come from Jamaica's oldest Blue Mountain coffee growing site—Clifton Mount Estate—at a growing altitude of 1,310 meters, with the Typica variety. The specification of this grade of coffee beans is between 17 and 18 mesh, the proportion of defective beans must not exceed 2%, the overall beans are uniform and plump, and the bean shape is semi-oval.

Clifton Mount Estate has a mature and strict operating process, which allows its Blue Mountain coffee beans to maintain more stable quality each year. In the Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) store, you can see the certificate of origin from Clifton Mount Estate, as well as the wooden barrels used to hold the green beans.

In order to let everyone experience the "steady character" of Blue Mountain coffee, Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) uses a medium-dark roast to enhance the body of Blue Mountain coffee while preserving a soft acidity, so that the overall cup presents a balance of acidity, sweetness, and bitterness. The coffee beans sent out by Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) are all within 5 days after roasting, because Front Street deeply understands that freshness has a huge impact on flavor.

After receiving the freshly roasted coffee beans, Front Street recommends using a drip method for brewing to enhance the clean mouthfeel of Blue Mountain coffee. The brewing parameters are as follows: water temperature 88°C, coffee dose 15 grams, coffee-to-water ratio 1:15, grind size medium-coarse (70% passing through a No. 20 sieve).

Specific brewing method: first pour 30 grams of water and bloom for 30 seconds; in the second stage, pour in a small stream in a circular motion up to 125 grams, wait for the water level in the coffee bed to drop by half before continuing to pour, then pour in a small stream in a circular motion up to 225 grams, and wait for all dripping to finish. The total extraction time is about 2 minutes and 10 seconds.

The pour-over flavor and mouthfeel of authentic Jamaican Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee: rich flavors of dark chocolate and nuts, a creamy and smooth mouthfeel, and a balance of acidity, sweetness, and bitterness.
