On a scorching summer day, a glass of iced coffee always brings a refreshing, invigorating delight. But can you tell the essential differences between cold brew, ice drip, iced Americano, and iced pour-over? This article systematically sorts out the characteristics of these four common iced coffees from four dimensions: extraction method, preparation time, ease of operation, and flavor and mouthfeel. Whether you are a coffee enthusiast just starting out or a home brewing player hoping to refine your skills, you can find the cup that suits you. The article also includes Front Street Coffee's detailed brewing parameters and flavor descriptions to help you more intuitively understand the unique charm of each iced coffee.

There are roughly four kinds of iced coffee most commonly drunk in daily life: iced Americano, iced pour-over, cold brew, and ice drip coffee. Quite a few friends are still not very clear about the differences between them, so Front Street will break them down one by one from several dimensions to help everyone clarify their respective characteristics and differences.

Extraction Method

From the perspective of extraction principles, both iced Americano and iced pour-over belong to the approach of first making hot coffee and then rapidly cooling it with ice; while cold brew and ice drip do not come into contact with hot water throughout the entire process and use cold water from beginning to end to complete extraction.

The method for iced Americano is to first extract espresso with an espresso machine, then add ice water to achieve cooling and dilution. Specific operation: take 20 grams of Front Street classic espresso blend coffee grounds, extract 40 grams of espresso at a 1:2 coffee-to-liquid ratio within 25–33 seconds; prepare another 300 ml glass, put in 90 grams of ice cubes and 180 grams of drinking water, pour in the espresso, stir evenly, and it is ready to drink.

The iced Americano made with Front Street classic espresso beans greets you at first sip with a full roasted nut aroma, with chocolate and caramel flavors interwoven with a creamy smooth texture, icy and rich, very satisfying to drink.

Iced pour-over, on the other hand, is first brewed by pour-over into a cup of hot coffee slightly stronger than the normal serving, then cooled and diluted by adding ice cubes. Below, Front Street uses the medium-light roasted Front Street Fruit Ding Ding as an example to share the high-strength, high-extraction iced pour-over parameters:

Dose: 15 grams

10 times hot water: 150 grams

5 times ice amount: 75 grams

Water temperature: 92°C

Grind size: 83% passing through a No. 20 sieve (EK43s setting 9, C40 setting 22)

Dripper: Hario V60

Technique: three-pour method

First put 75 grams of ice cubes into the server, then pour 15 grams of coffee grounds into the dripper and gently tap level. For the first pour, use a small flow of 3 ml/sec to pour 30 grams of hot water from the center outward in a small circle, and let it bloom for 30 seconds; after 30 seconds, use the same technique to pour the second pour of 60 grams of water, taking care not to let the water level rise too high, otherwise it is easy to underextract; when the coffee liquid is about to finish dripping, pour all of the remaining 60 grams of hot water at a flow rate of 3 ml/sec, ensuring the total extraction time is controlled between 1 minute 50 seconds and 2 minutes.

The method for cold brew coffee is to soak coffee grounds in cold water for a long time, then filter out the coffee grounds before drinking. The specific operation is as follows.

Front Street takes Strawberry Candy as an example, chooses a 1-liter cold brew pot, weighs 60 grams of Front Street Strawberry Candy coffee beans, and grinds to the coarseness of fine granulated sugar (80% passing through the Chinese No. 20 standard sieve). Pour the ground coffee into the pot, add 600 grams of drinking water at a 1:10 coffee-to-water ratio, stir evenly with a long spoon, seal, and place in the refrigerator to chill for 8–12 hours. After soaking, take out the cold brew pot, stir thoroughly again, then pour into filter paper to remove the grounds, and once the coffee liquid has been fully filtered, the cold brew is complete.

Ice drip coffee relies on ice water falling drop by drop onto the coffee grounds to complete extraction. It also takes a long time to make, and after dripping is complete it still needs to be refrigerated before drinking. The specific method is as follows:

The flow rate of ice drip is calculated by drops per second, which is different from the concept of flow rate in pour-over. The slower the flow rate, the longer the total time, and the more likely over-extraction becomes. Front Street usually uses a flow rate of 7 drops every 10 seconds, and everyone can adjust according to their own preference. The coffee-to-liquid ratio is 1:10, because the ice drip produced by Front Street is drunk after dilution with ice cubes, so the concentration is a bit higher; if making it at home, you can extract at 1:12 to 1:14. When Front Street makes ice drip, it takes 60 grams of coffee beans and grinds them into grounds, places a round filter paper at the bottom of the coffee chamber, pours in the coffee grounds, then lays another sheet of filter paper on the surface, and then wets the coffee grounds with water. This can both shorten the dripping time and avoid uneven extraction. Fill the upper pot with an ice-water mixture (ice to water 1:1), extracting a total of 600 grams of coffee liquid.

Preparation Time

In terms of time required, iced Americano and iced pour-over are very quick and can be done in just a few minutes; cold brew and ice drip are much slower. Cold brew generally takes about 12 hours, and ice drip about 6 to 8 hours.

Ease of Preparation

If operating at home, iced pour-over and cold brew are relatively the most convenient choices. Cold brew has almost no requirements for equipment; a sealed bottle is enough. The equipment for iced pour-over is also very accessible, and those who usually have a pour-over habit basically have everything ready.

By comparison, iced Americano requires an espresso machine, and ice drip also requires special equipment, so the investment cost is somewhat higher.

Differences in Flavor and Mouthfeel

Here Front Street should first explain one point: whether coffee is sour or bitter, and whether it has floral and fruity notes or nutty and chocolate notes, mainly depends on what flavor of coffee beans is used, and the influence brought by the extraction method is actually not that great. Different iced coffee methods do indeed present different styles, but these differences come out through comparison, and no matter which method is used, the final taste cannot depart from the flavor baseline of the coffee beans themselves.

Iced Americano usually has a lighter flavor and a refreshing mouthfeel, and can display the most basic taste of the coffee beans. For example, an iced Americano made with Front Street classic espresso blend carries flavors of dark chocolate, nuts, and caramel biscuits, and the liquid looks relatively cloudy.

The characteristic of iced pour-over is that it is clean and refreshing, and it easily highlights the main flavors of the coffee beans. The liquid is transparent and bright, and it is easier to drink than hot pour-over.

Cold brew has lower bitterness, balanced flavor, and prominent sweetness. Its mouthfeel is thicker than iced pour-over. The cold brew made with Front Street Strawberry Candy carries rose floral notes, raisins, and a fruity-wine-like body, and drinks round and full. The clarity of the liquid is slightly inferior to that of iced pour-over.

Ice drip has relatively rich fermentation-type flavors, such as alcoholic notes. Under the premise of the same beans, ice drip has higher bitterness than the other three iced coffees, and its mouthfeel is also superior.
