Why did a Luckin coffee store face a safety complaint?

A Shanghai resident was tripped and injured on the evening of January 4 while passing a Luckin Coffee store at No. 1495 North Kaixuan Road in Putuo District. The obstacle was a door stop privately installed by the business, standing about 4 centimeters above the sidewalk. The victim hit the wall, suffering a bump on the forehead and a bruised big toe.

Luckin's official customer service intervened after the incident, and the store removed the illegal device. The case has drawn public attention to how coffee store operators handle public sidewalks. Because such fittings sit below eye level and are hard to see after dark, they can become a hazard for pedestrians, and removal has been ordered as the response proceeds.

Recently, a resident reported to Shanghai Legal Daily that he was tripped and injured by a door stop that a business had arbitrarily installed on the sidewalk while passing a Luckin store in Shanghai.

According to the report, on the evening of January 4, the victim was passing the entrance of the Luckin Coffee store at No. 1495 North Kaixuan Road in Putuo District after work when he was suddenly tripped and lost his balance, slamming into a wall. Fortunately, he managed to brace himself against the wall with both hands in time, but his forehead still hit the wall and a swollen bump appeared.

After the accident, the victim initially wanted to go into the store to talk with the staff, but the store was already closed, and since he thought his injuries were not serious, he went home first. However, when he checked his wounds at home, he found that in addition to the bump on his forehead, his big toe was also bruised from the impact.

Recalling that moment, the victim was still shaken: "It was already dark, and I couldn't see at all what had tripped me. When I returned to the spot and shone my phone flashlight on it, I realized it was a door pin (door stop) installed by the Luckin Coffee store." He said bluntly that if he had not reacted quickly, the consequences could have been more serious.

Regarding the store's installation of a door stop on the street surface, the victim could not help but feel concerned, believing that the door stop on the ground was like a "time bomb" for passing pedestrians. He told reporters that the road where the Luckin store is located is close to Metro Lines 3 and 4, with many shops along the street, and there is heavy foot traffic whether on weekdays or weekends.

At the same time, the victim noted that there is an education and training center near the store involved, with many students coming and going on weekends, and the door stop installed on the pedestrian walkway could very likely trip other passersby and cause injuries from falls.

According to on-site photos provided by the victim, on both sides of the entrance of the Luckin Coffee store involved, the business had installed two door stops about 20 centimeters from the door frame to control the opening angle of the glass door. According to the reporter's investigation, this type of door stop stands 4 centimeters above the ground after installation. If pedestrians walk along the passage at the store entrance, they can indeed easily bump into these two protruding devices.

In response to the issues raised by the victim, the reporter then contacted Luckin Coffee's official customer service. The customer service representative said they would contact the victim and further verify the store's situation, and if it was found that the store had illegally installed the door stop, they would require it to be removed immediately.

As of the time of the reporter's filing, the victim replied to the reporter that Luckin customer service staff had contacted him, apologized for the accident, and said they had already asked the store involved to remove the door stop illegally installed on the ground at the store entrance. When the victim passed the store again, he found that the situation was indeed as the Luckin staff had said: the door stops on both sides of the store entrance that could trip pedestrians had disappeared, and the ground had returned to its original smooth condition.
