Recently, a netizen posted on social media claiming that they had found a large cockroach in a cup of coffee purchased at Starbucks.
According to the poster, at around 4 p.m. on May 29, a friend bought a Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew at the Starbucks Nanjing Financial City store, drank a small portion of it in the store after receiving it, and then left. The coffee was left in the car until around 8 p.m. that night, when the friend picked up the takeaway cup again and drank it all in one go, only to discover under sufficient light that a huge cockroach was lying at the bottom of the cup. The person involved was badly frightened on the spot.
From the images accompanying the post, the cup lid had not been opened, and there was indeed a fairly large cockroach at the bottom of the plastic cup, making for a shocking sight. After the post was published, many users expressed concern about the hygiene conditions of the Starbucks store and shared their views in the comments section.
In the public imagination, Starbucks has strict standards for beverage preparation and store hygiene. Some Starbucks employees also commented that if such an obvious foreign object had been mixed into a customer's Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew, it should have been discovered immediately during the preparation process and would be unlikely to reach the consumer.
At the same time, when interacting with netizens, the poster revealed that after discovering the cockroach, the friend complained to the store involved, but the staff immediately denied it and said that after checking the surveillance footage they had confirmed there was no problem with the operation, without expressing any apology throughout.
In response, some onlookers believed that since the foreign object was found at the bottom of the cup a long time after the drink left the store, it was actually impossible to rule out the possibility that the cockroach had crawled in by itself through the drinking opening. In this view, the consumer drinking a foreign object was not necessarily entirely due to negligence during store preparation, and the store's refusal to compensate was understandable.
Media reporters following this food safety incident contacted the relevant person in charge of the Starbucks store involved. The person said that the consumer who reported the situation came to the store on May 30, claiming that she had discovered a foreign object in the drink three and a half hours after leaving the store with it on the 29th.
The person in charge said: "After learning of the situation and obtaining the consumer's consent, we immediately checked the surveillance video and confirmed that the store strictly followed standard procedures in making the drink that day. The customer bought the drink at around 16:55, then drank and stayed in the store for about 50 minutes, drinking normally during that time. At around 17:44, the customer picked up the ice cup twice and observed it carefully, with no abnormalities seen, and then left the store with the unfinished drink."
After this incident, the store recently invited a third-party pest control company to inspect the in-store operating areas and other places, and no related problems reported by the customer were found. In addition, store employees told reporters that staff from the drug administration had already visited the store to learn about the situation, and the matter is being handled.
According to a report by Jiangsu News Radio, staff from the market supervision administration in the area where the Starbucks store involved is located visited the store on June 3 to investigate and collect evidence. "The store's pest inspection and disinfection records are complete, with no abnormalities, and employee operations are compliant. We are compiling the relevant report."
