Iced Coffee Safety Scare in Malaysia Prompts Police Report

A consumer in Malaysia bought five bags of iced coffee to take home. Two bags leaked on the way, which she blamed on poor plastic. At home, after coffee was poured into a container, she found broken glass mixed with the ice cubes. The pieces varied in size, some sharp and large enough to pick up by hand, others floating like crumbs on the liquid.

The shop denied any problem and refused responsibility. After coffee story spread on Facebook, some people worried the lack of evidence would make it hard to defend her rights, while others wanted the shop exposed. The consumer reported the matter to police, hoping an investigation will uncover the truth and prevent similar harm to others.

Recently, a consumer in Malaysia revealed in a Facebook group that the iced coffee she bought to take away from a local coffee shop was mixed with a large amount of broken glass, causing the plastic bags to rupture and leak. The coffee shop involved denied any problem with its product and refused to take responsibility. Recently, multiple media outlets including Sing Tao Headline reported that a netizen uploaded videos and photos to the Facebook group "Serdang Mi Deng You," claiming that the iced coffee she purchased was mixed with a large amount of broken glass.

According to the consumer, she went to a local coffee shop in Malaysia to buy iced coffee. Since the shop used plastic bags for takeaway, she carried five bags of iced coffee home. On the way, she noticed that two of the bags were damaged. At the time, she assumed the leaks were due to poor quality plastic bags and did not pay much attention.

After returning home, she poured the coffee into a container and only then noticed the real cause of the plastic bag leaks—broken glass mixed in with the ice cubes.

From the video uploaded by the netizen, the filtered-out glass fragments varied in size and looked strikingly like ice cubes. Some pieces were large enough to pick up directly, with sharp edges and pointed corners; others were crumb-like, floating on the surface of the liquid. If one were not careful, these glass fragments could be swallowed while drinking.

The shocking scene left the consumer deeply frightened. She stated that the glass fragments in the video came from three of the bags of coffee. The other two bags had been taken to work by family members, who discarded them after discovering broken glass inside. She felt fortunate that she had not rashly drunk the iced coffee mixed with broken glass, and also fortunate that her family members had not bitten into the glass thinking it was ice—they had promptly spat out the glass fragments upon discovery. Otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

The post quickly attracted widespread attention from netizens, most of whom were extremely shocked, saying they could hardly imagine so much broken glass appearing in a bag of iced coffee.

At the same time, many people turned into "internet detectives," speculating about the cause based on the consumer's description. Some believed that perhaps the ice factory supplying ice to the coffee shop had a problem at some stage, causing broken glass to be mixed into the ice used by the shop.

Others surmised that a coffee shop employee might have broken a glass item, causing glass fragments to fall into the ice storage container, but the employee may not have wanted to discard the ice and failed to pick out all the broken glass, which then ended up in the coffee during preparation.

However, some netizens, after learning about the incident, worriedly pointed out that since the consumer only noticed the broken glass after returning home, the videos and photos she took might not constitute sufficient evidence to prove that the glass fragments in the iced coffee came from the coffee shop. Therefore, the shop could easily claim that the consumer staged this frightening scene herself and deny any connection between the broken glass and the store.

In fact, the netizens' concerns were not unfounded. The consumer claimed that after discovering the broken glass, she immediately reported the situation to the coffee shop, but the other party flatly denied that the broken glass in the drink was a problem with the store's product and was unwilling to take responsibility.

Based on this, more people urged the consumer to disclose information about the shop involved to prevent other customers from falling victim and causing irreversible tragedy—"drinking it could kill someone." The consumer also followed the advice of onlookers and reported the matter to the police, hoping the police would uncover the truth and hold the coffee shop accountable.
