Recently, a Weibo post about a barista and a customer throwing coffee at each other at a Luckin Coffee store in Hangzhou sparked widespread discussion. According to the blogger, the dispute was suspected to have started because a customer was unhappy with the drink preparation and demanded an apology; after emotions escalated, the throwing occurred. Although there is no complete video of the incident, it reflects the tension between chain coffee brands' service standards and customer expectations. Luckin employees revealed that the company does not have a mandatory "remake if unsatisfied" policy, but when faced with requests such as taste mismatch, baristas often find themselves in a dilemma: refusing may lead to bad reviews and complaints, while compromising may encourage unreasonable demands. The strict internal feedback assessment mechanism further increases the pressure on frontline employees. This article will reconstruct the course of the incident and explore how to balance service standards and employees' circumstances in the coffee industry.

Recently, a Weibo post titled "Encountering a customer and barista throwing coffee at each other outside a Luckin store" spread rapidly online and attracted a large number of netizens' attention.
The blogger wrote in the Weibo post that while passing by the Luckin Coffee Hangzhou Huanglong Vanke store, they happened to see an employee in a fierce argument with a customer. After stopping to listen for a moment, the blogger roughly understood: "It seemed that the customer thought the barista made the first drink wrong and demanded an apology (?), while the barista insisted there was no mistake and would not apologize, though they still remade a cup for the customer. But the two sides remained locked in dispute, and then the customer threw the coffee out (?)."
From the photos shared by the blogger, there was a discarded cup of coffee on the ground in front of the store involved, with traces of spillage around it. Besides the two parties to the conflict and onlookers, there were also police officers on duty nearby. In addition, the blogger mentioned that the customer arguing with the barista was covered in coffee stains on their body and skirt, and therefore guessed that after the customer threw the coffee, the barista might have retaliated and also thrown coffee.
Although this Weibo post was just a passerby's casual record and did not include a video of the entire incident, it still triggered heated discussion among netizens.
Some people commented on the incident itself, believing that no matter the reason, neither side should vent their emotions by throwing coffee. Others felt that the trigger of the conflict was the customer's "unreasonable pestering," because demanding that the barista remake the drink and apologize simply due to personal dissatisfaction, and refusing to let it go, was what escalated the conflict and ultimately turned it into the extreme act of throwing coffee.
However, in the eyes of Luckin employees, the dispute described in the Weibo post is actually a situation they may encounter in their daily work.
They said that Luckin, unlike some chain brands, does not have a hard-and-fast rule that "if you are unsatisfied, it can be remade." According to Luckin's employee training content, only when there is a problem with product quality, appearance, or category will employees remake it according to the customer's request. But in actual work, Luckin employees often encounter customers who ask for a remake because the drink temperature, amount of ice, sweetness level, and so on do not match their personal taste.

In such situations, baristas can clearly refuse according to the rules and regulations. If they encounter a reasonable customer, the customer will stop insisting after hearing the explanation. But if they run into someone who will not listen to reason, the worker has to endure the customer's anger. A Luckin barista shared in the comments section that a customer in their store, after receiving a latte, insisted that the barista had given them plain milk and, after a disagreement, poured the drink onto the counter.
From the outside, this may look like a customer making unreasonable trouble, and the barista did nothing wrong by following store rules. But Luckin workers say that although they did not do anything wrong, they may still receive bad reviews and complaints because of it.
Employees revealed that Luckin places great importance on user feedback internally. Once a store receives a bad review, they have to write a lengthy self-analysis for it, and in serious cases, performance pay may be deducted as punishment. Moreover, if they argue with customers during communication, or engage in acts such as throwing coffee that defy customers, it will not only damage the store's reputation but also cost them their jobs. For this reason, when facing unreasonable demands from certain people, most Luckin employees can only "not hit back or talk back" in order to reduce bad reviews and complaints for the store, and try their best to satisfy the other party's needs.
As of press time, media outlets such as Gongfu Finance reported that a journalist contacted Luckin officially regarding the matter of the "barista and customer throwing coffee at each other." Customer service responded that they had not yet received relevant notice and said that specific information should be based on official releases from Luckin Coffee.
