What Does the Name Gotiti Mean in Yirgacheffe Coffee?

Gotiti is neither a producing region nor a coffee variety. It is a cooperative founded in 2012 and also the name of a village, located in the small town of Gedeb in the southeastern corner of the Yirgacheffe producing region, about 60 kilometers from Yirgacheffe town.

Gedeb became independent from the Kochere producing region and now counts as a sub-region of Yirgacheffe, a shift driven by specialty coffee traceability. Beans from this area are known for lemony sweetness and white floral aroma, and the cooperative model links smallholder farms to that traceable supply chain.

Among the many coffees of Yirgacheffe, the name "Gotiti" always sparks curiosity. It sounds playful and cute, but many people aren't clear about what it actually refers to—is it a producing region, a bean variety, or something else? In fact, Gotiti is neither the name of a producing region nor a coffee variety, but a cooperative founded in 2012, and also the name of a village. It is located in the small town of Gedeb in the southeastern corner of Yirgacheffe. Driven by the traceability of specialty coffee, Gedeb has become independent from the Kochere producing region and become a sub-region of Yirgacheffe. This article will detail Gotiti's geographical belonging, cooperative operation model, and bean characteristics, and through Front Street Coffee's pour-over tasting, let you experience this bean's unique lemony sweetness and white floral aroma.

But did you know that whenever Yirgacheffe is mentioned, most people can't avoid one bean—"Gotiti."

"Gotiti" is a playful and interesting name. Many friends, when they are not yet deeply into coffee, are attracted by its name and order a cup to see if it tastes as playful as its name.

Front Street Coffee believes many friends, like the guest who visited yesterday, have known Gotiti for a long time but don't understand whether the name refers to a bean variety or a place of origin. Then a dramatic scene unfolded. This friend went straight online to search for the answer, and this is what they found!

Emmmmm… So today, Front Street Coffee will share with you what Gotiti actually refers to!

What is Gotiti? Gotiti is actually not the name of any producing region or any bean variety; it is a cooperative and also a small village. Compared with old-established cooperatives that have been around for decades, it is much younger, because Gotiti was founded in 2012.

Gotiti Cooperative is located in the small town of Gedeb in the southeastern corner of the Yirgacheffe producing region, about 60 kilometers from Yirgacheffe town. If divided according to the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange's classification of producing regions, Gedeb town actually belongs to the Kochere producing region, while if divided administratively, Gedeb is at the same administrative level as Kochere. No-prize bet!!! Does Gotiti belong to Yirgacheffe's Gedeb producing region, or Yirgacheffe's Kochere?

Answer revealed: Driven by the traceability of specialty coffee, Gedeb successfully separated from Kochere, which means Gotiti Cooperative belongs to the Gedeb sub-region of Yirgacheffe.

The Gedeb producing region has a relatively high average altitude, around 1,900–2,200 meters. The high altitude delays the maturation of coffee, allowing the coffee to accumulate more flavor. One reason many small producing regions become independent is the traceability of specialty coffee, and another is that they believe the coffee they produce can rival that of large producing regions. Because of this, the more than 300 farmers who make up Gotiti broke away from the Worka Cooperative under the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) and established Gotiti Cooperative.

What is a cooperative? After coffee cherries are harvested, they are processed to remove the skin, pulp, and other substances besides the beans. The place where these cherries are processed is the processing plant. But because coffee cherry processing has relatively high requirements for space and equipment, many coffee farmers cannot afford to buy them even if they spend all the money from selling beans! So what can be done?

Some coffee farmers choose to transport the harvested cherries to nearby processing plants and have others process them. But this leads to many middlemen getting involved, driving down the purchase price of the cherries and reducing income. So, in order to reduce the price difference taken by middlemen, coffee farmers in an area pool funds to jointly set up a processing plant. Then such a processing plant is named after the local place name, for example the Gotiti processing plant, whose name comes from the local village: Banko Gotiti, abbreviated as Gotiti. After the cooperative is established, coffee farmers can send their cherries uniformly to the processing plant for processing, and then deal directly with exporters, without having too much of a price difference taken by middlemen. And the beans produced by Gotiti Cooperative are also all named "Gotiti." So at this point some friends may ask: since it is not the name of a bean variety, then what is Gotiti's bean variety?

What is Gotiti's bean variety? We need to know that the vast majority of coffee cultivation in the Yirgacheffe producing region belongs to the garden model, and coffee produced under this model has an alias: "garden coffee." Gotiti's coffee belongs to this type. So-called garden coffee means that coffee farmers plant coffee trees in their own fields or within the area where they live, then pick the cherries themselves and send them to a processing plant for unified processing. Gotiti Cooperative's planting area is about 760 hectares. On average, each farmer's planting area is about 2 hectares, and the annual output is nearly 460 tons.
