What does the QR code embezzlement case mean for coffee shops?

A milk tea shop employee in Beijing swapped the store's payment QR code for a personal one and collected more than 40,000 yuan from customers starting in May, hiding the act by cutting the network and turning off surveillance. The Haidian Public Security Bureau says the worker, surnamed Zhou, has been criminally detained on suspicion of occupational embezzlement.

The store manager reported the case on August 16 after an internal self-check showed sales falling since February, and a surveillance review pointed to the employee. For street coffee and beverage operators, the case highlights how single-staff shifts and weak payment oversight create openings, and why routine reconciliation and monitoring matter for anyone running a retail counter.

Recently, an incident in which a milk tea shop employee replaced the store's payment QR code with a personal one and embezzled tens of thousands of yuan from the company topped Weibo's trending searches, sparking widespread discussion. According to a notice from the Haidian Public Security Bureau in Beijing, the employee had been collecting payments via a personal QR code since May of this year, and concealed the behavior by cutting off the network and turning off surveillance. The estimated amount embezzled reached over 40,000 yuan, and the person has now been criminally detained in accordance with the law. This case not only reveals loopholes in the financial management of retail stores, but also once again reminds operators to strengthen internal supervision. Recently, a case was exposed in which a milk tea shop employee "swapped in" a payment QR code and was arrested by police on suspicion of occupational embezzlement. The topic #MilkTeaClerkUsedPersonalQRCodeToEmbezzleTensOfThousandsFromCompany# also made it onto Weibo's trending search list this morning, drawing a large number of netizens to watch and discuss.

According to a message released by the Haidian Public Security Bureau in Beijing, at 17:00 on August 16, the Wanshou Road Police Station of the Haidian Public Security Sub-bureau received a report from the manager of a milk tea shop within its jurisdiction. The manager said that during an internal self-inspection, the company found that store sales had declined noticeably since February of this year. After reviewing the in-store surveillance, it was discovered that an employee surnamed Zhou, when working alone on shifts, privately used a personal payment QR code to collect money from customers, while also taking measures such as cutting off the store's network and turning off surveillance to conceal his actions. Preliminary estimates put the amount he collected personally at tens of thousands of yuan.

In response, police officers from the Wanshou Road Police Station carried out extensive investigations into public video resources around the milk tea shop, in-store surveillance footage, and business ledgers, ultimately confirming that the suspect, Zhou, joined the company in February of this year and began privately using a personal payment QR code to collect payments in May, embezzling company funds.

According to the police, each time Zhou would take advantage of moments when colleagues were resting and he was working alone to quietly take out his phone and show customers his personal payment QR code to collect money. In this way, the company's operating revenue flowed into his personal account.

"He had earlier combined a photo of his personal payment code with the name of the milk tea shop into a new image and stored it on his phone. At checkout, he let customers mistakenly believe this was the store's payment code," the police officer said. From May until the store manager reported the case to the police station, Zhou had embezzled more than 40,000 yuan from the company.

After extensive screening and visits, police successfully arrested the suspect Zhou on August 17 at his temporary residence and brought him back to the police station for investigation. According to his account, because his personal spending was usually high, he thought of using a personal payment QR code to collect money, and the company's more than 40,000 yuan had already been squandered by him. At present, Zhou has been criminally detained by Haidian police in accordance with the law, and the case is under further review.

According to Article 270 of the Criminal Law, the crime of embezzlement refers to a crime constituted when a person, for the purpose of illegal possession, unlawfully takes as his own another person's property entrusted to him for safekeeping, lost property, or buried property, where the amount is relatively large and he refuses to return it.

The crime of embezzlement and the crime of theft both belong to crimes against property, and their differences are mainly shown in the following: The crime of theft is the act of secretly stealing public or private property; at the time of theft, the property is not under the actor's control; whereas the crime of embezzlement is when the actor embezzles property entrusted by the owner for management, and when he carries out the act of embezzlement, the embezzled property is already under his actual control.

According to legal provisions, when such a crime involves an amount exceeding 30,000 yuan, criminal proceedings will be initiated, and such conduct may face corresponding criminal liability. In addition, this incident also reminds enterprises to strengthen internal financial management to prevent the occurrence of similar fraudulent behavior.
