Ice Eye Dripper Design and Green Geisha Coffee Beans vs V60

Ice Eye dripper design and green geisha coffee beans

The Ice Eye dripper is a conical brewer whose cup wall works differently from a V60. Instead of raised ribs that prop the filter paper open, it presses concave grooves into the inner wall. The top section stays smooth so paper sits flush, the middle has 24 finer grooves that slow water flow, and the bottom has 12 thicker grooves reaching the outlet.

Each thick lower groove pairs with two fine grooves above it in an inverted-A layout, leaving much of the lower half suspended. This staggered structure creates different flow speeds at different heights, extending immersion time. A measured comparison brewed the same Emerald Estate Green Label Geisha green geisha coffee beans in both drippers to show how the cup wall shifts flavor direction.

The Ice Eye dripper has garnered considerable attention in the coffee community for its outstanding visual design, but what truly deserves discussion is its cup wall structure, which follows a completely different approach from common conical drippers. This article will break down the design logic of the Ice Eye dripper's three-layer cup wall, explain how the grooves affect water flow speed and immersion time, and through a comparative brewing experiment with the V60, present the flavor direction of the same Emerald Estate Green Label Geisha under two different drippers. At the end, complete pour-over parameters and Front Street Coffee's store information are included for readers to reference and practice.

The protagonist we're discussing today has attracted plenty of attention since its debut thanks to its good looks—it's the "Ice Eye Dripper."

Setting aside its shiny, crystal-clear appearance for now, although the Ice Eye dripper also falls under the broad category of conical drippers, its cup wall construction takes a different path from its fellow conical brethren.

The conical drippers we typically encounter mostly have raised flow-guiding ribs standing along the cup wall. These ribs prop the filter paper open, leaving an exhaust channel between the paper and the cup wall, and the length of this exhaust channel directly affects how fast water flows down.

The reason we bring up exhaust channels here is that the Ice Eye dripper doesn't create them through outward-protruding guiding ribs, but rather the opposite—by pressing concave grooves from the inner cup body outward.

Turning to the side view, the cup wall structure is clear at a glance, divided into three sections in total: the top section is smooth with no grooves at all, allowing the filter paper to fit snugly against it; the middle section features 24 finer grooves; and the bottom section consists of 12 thicker grooves that extend all the way to the outlet.

Each thick groove in the lower section pairs with two fine grooves above it in an inverted-A arrangement. It's fair to say the lower half is almost entirely suspended in mid-air, just like the Origami.

This layout creates a staggered water flow speed at different heights: the 24 fine grooves in the middle layer serve to slow the flow rate, extending the immersion extraction time; once the water reaches the lower groove area, the suspended construction speeds the flow back up, thereby avoiding the risk of over-extraction.

As a result, the Ice Eye also belongs to the category of faster-flow drippers. So when placed side by side with the familiar V60, what exactly will differ in the coffee they brew?

Experiment Comparison

Fast-flow drippers typically pair better with light-roasted and medium-roasted beans, so the bean chosen for this comparison is the "Emerald Estate · Green Label Geisha"~ It's absolutely not because Front Street was abusing its position for personal gain and wanted to drink it (probably)!

Dose: 15g Grind setting: Ek43 at 10 Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:15 (225ml) Brewing temperature: 92°C Brewing method: three-pour

First pour: use twice the coffee dose in water, i.e. 30ml, for a 30-second bloom, then slowly pour in a large circle, adding the second pour of 120ml hot water. When the water level is nearly at the bottom, pour in the remaining 75ml, slowly in a small circle, until dripping finishes!

The V60's extraction took 2 minutes 15 seconds, and the brewed Green Label carried a honeydew-like sweetness, gentle citrus acidity, jasmine aroma, and a distinct green tea character.

The Ice Eye's extraction took 2 minutes 16 seconds, almost identical to the V60. The Green Label it brewed likewise had jasmine aroma and honeydew sweetness, with an extra hint of orange peel. The mouthfeel was fuller than the V60's, while the tea-like quality was slightly weaker.

The V60's strength lies in its ability to adjust extraction time through pouring speed, giving brighter, cleaner flavors with more layered complexity, but it falls short in body.

The Ice Eye's strength lies in its ability to create immersion-style extraction in the upper and middle layers of the dripper, making the coffee taste fuller with higher body. However, its layering is less distinct than the V60's, and the aroma and acidity come across as somewhat less defined.

Beyond looking good, the Ice Eye dripper has another heart-stirring feature! It effortlessly gets the filter paper to cling to the cup wall, unlike other conical drippers that require ages of fiddling to barely fit! For those with OCD tendencies, this is simply wonderful!
