As a Geisha enthusiast, you've probably heard the name "Ironman Geisha," right? But have you ever wondered what exactly "Ironman" refers to? And what connection does it have with Geisha? Without further ado, today Front Street takes you into this top Geisha estate—Finca Auromar.

Finca Auromar was established in 2006, founded by Roberto Brenes. Compared with those old famous estates with decades or even a century of heritage, it is just a "young upstart" of a little over ten years. However, since Finca Auromar first entered BOP in 2013 with its "Ironman Geisha" (Ironman Geisha) and took first place in the washed category, it has made the competition's candidate list almost every year since. Today, Finca Auromar not only has an impressive award record, but its annual production of specialty Geisha has also made it internationally renowned.

Interestingly, behind this highly decorated estate, its owner Roberto is himself quite legendary. Before entering the coffee world, he was the CEO of the Panama Stock Exchange, a powerful figure in Panama's financial circles. In his youth, he was forced into exile in the United States for making radical remarks against the government. After earning an MBA from Columbia University, he formally entered the field of banking and investment, and near the age of sixty returned to his homeland Panama to take over the management of a coffee estate—which was part of his retirement plan.

The land where the estate sits has been passed down through generations of Roberto's wife's family, and the estate's name is taken from their daughter (Aurora) and granddaughter (Mar); the combination of the two forms AUROMAR (Finca Auromar).

Like many award-winning estates, Finca Auromar is located in the Volcán area, one of Panama's three major coffee regions, in the valley on the western side of Barú Volcano. But its geographical location is quite special—it is only about two kilometers from the border between Panama and Costa Rica. Checking on Google Maps, Front Street found that the entire estate sits right in the northwest corner of Panama's territory, making it easy to identify.

The estate covers 30.5 hectares, about half of which is preserved as native tropical rainforest. The average annual temperature here ranges from 16–25°C, with rainfall reaching 3,500 mm, and combined with its unique terrain, this creates an excellent microclimate. To keep coffee cultivation and the primitive forest in ecological balance, Roberto led his team to reorganize the plantations within the estate, ensuring a reasonable planting density for the coffee trees, with altitudes ranging from 1,570 to 1,770 meters. The estate is rich in vegetation species; the owner has transplanted local banana, avocado, cedar, and other plants next to the coffee trees to provide denser shade for them.

Roberto pours great passion into everything, and he is also a "fanatic" of triathlons, often participating in professional competitions. When naming the Geisha produced by the estate, he also incorporated elements of this sport—for example, the washed Geisha lot that won the 2013 BOP championship was named "Ironman," translated into Chinese as "Ironman Geisha," so much so that later many people simply referred to all of Finca Auromar's Geisha as Ironman Geisha.

Besides naming Geisha out of passion, Roberto also likes to incorporate family members' names into the estate's operations. At the 2014 Best of Panama competition, Auromar made the BOP winners list with a Camilina natural Geisha, named after his beloved little granddaughter. In 2020, Finca Auromar released another high-scoring Geisha, Catalina, making a strong comeback with its unique Geisha flavor; Front Street has confirmed that its name likewise comes from another of Roberto's lovely little granddaughters.

Beyond Geisha, Finca Auromar also has a farm dedicated to growing non-Geisha varieties, named after the granddaughter of Roberto's partner, Alma, which means "soul" in Spanish. Front Street tasted the latest-season natural Catuai from the Alma plot, experiencing distinct butter cookie, chocolate, and hazelnut flavors, accompanied by the rounded texture of black tea and a very dense aroma.

Finca Auromar is also extremely meticulous in processing natural coffee. Every harvest season, the estate arranges for staff to hand-select coffee cherries at just the right ripeness to ensure higher sweetness in the fruit. The fresh cherries are then promptly sent to a nearby processing plant and evenly spread on raised drying beds covered with shade cloth to dry; depending on the weather, the whole process lasts about 25–30 days. The dried parchment beans are then placed in cellars used to isolate moisture and rested for a period before hulling, with the aim of giving the coffee greater cleanliness.

To taste the "colorful fruit candy" flavor that the judges spoke of, Front Street also got its hands on the freshly released Catalina Natural Geisha, roasting it to a medium-light level to showcase the delicate floral and fruity aromas characteristic of Panamanian Geisha. On the 5th day after roasting, Front Street immediately cupped this Geisha.

In the aroma evaluation stage, Front Street sensed from this natural Catalina a light yet complex floral fragrance, reminiscent of white flowers such as thyme, lily, and jasmine; the rising lemon-citrus notes intertwined with the sweet tropical fruit aroma, making one feel delighted.

On the palate, the coffee first shows a floral fragrance, followed by the rich fruity aromas of ripe strawberry, guava, and pineapple, with sweetness especially prominent. As the temperature drops slightly, the sweet-tart notes of berries such as blueberry, cherry, and grape begin to emerge, and after swallowing there is a lingering sweetness like oolong tea; the mouthfeel is very smooth, and the finish is clear and lasting, making one unable to resist taking the next sip.
