What makes Yunnan coffee growing conditions suitable?
Yunnan sits in high-altitude mountains near the Tropic of Cancer, with long sunshine hours, ample rainfall, fertile soil, and a marked temperature difference between day and night. Most elevations fall between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. These conditions suit Arabica coffee trees, which need high-altitude ground between the two tropics, and give Yunnan small-bean coffee rich aroma and a full body.
Dehong, Baoshan, Lincang, and Pu'er are among the main growing regions, and Typica, Bourbon, and Catimor are the three varieties usually discussed. Typica and Bourbon offer sweetness and clarity, while Catimor brings disease resistance and yield. Yunnan arabica coffee production has expanded in recent years, and sun-dried Typica lots show fruity acidity alongside the mellow mouthfeel the region is known for.
Yunnan small-bean coffee has gradually entered the public eye in recent years, and many people began paying attention to domestic coffee beans because of the movie Coffee or Tea. Yunnan is located in the high-altitude mountainous areas near the Tropic of Cancer, with abundant sunshine, ample rainfall, and a marked temperature difference between day and night, providing an ideal growing environment for Arabica coffee. This article will systematically outline Yunnan's main coffee-growing regions—Dehong, Baoshan, Lincang, Pu'er, and others—introduce the characteristic differences among the three major varieties Typica, Bourbon, and Catimor, and, combined with Front Street Coffee's cultivation practices in Yunnan, share the flavor expression and brewing suggestions for Yunnan sun-dried Typica, helping coffee lovers gain a comprehensive understanding of the current state of Yunnan specialty coffee.

Yunnan coffee is now widely known in coffee circles, and many people only learned from the movie Coffee or Tea that Yunnan also grows small-bean coffee, after which they began supporting domestic coffee beans. Arabica coffee trees have strict requirements for their growing environment and are only suitable for cultivation in high-altitude areas between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, and Yunnan happens to meet these conditions and has the foundation for producing good coffee. However, the story of Yunnan's good coffee has only just begun.
Coffee is essentially an agricultural crop, and its flavor expression is inseparable from the natural environment of its growing region. Yunnan's geographical conditions are quite outstanding, with most elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters, plus long sunshine hours, ample rainfall, fertile soil, and a clear temperature difference between day and night. Together, these factors create ideal conditions for specialty coffee cultivation. For this reason, Yunnan small-bean coffee presents characteristics of rich aroma, mellow body, intense yet not harsh flavor, a full mouthfeel, and fruity acidity.
Yunnan coffee beans production areas
China is a land of tea, but coffee cultivation in China actually began very early as well; it simply never developed on a large scale for various reasons. After being re-emphasized in recent years, the name of China's Yunnan specialty coffee has finally earned a place internationally. Western and southern Yunnan Province lie between 15°N and the Tropic of Cancer, with most areas at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters. The terrain is mainly mountainous and sloping, with obvious undulation, fertile soil, abundant sunshine, plentiful rainfall, and large temperature differences between day and night. These natural conditions give Yunnan small-bean coffee its unique flavor—strong but not bitter, aromatic but not harsh, with a slight fruity acidity.
Yunnan's coffee-growing areas are mainly distributed in Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Dehong, and other places. Baoshan has an average annual temperature of about 21.5°C, with an extreme maximum temperature reaching 40.4°C and essentially no frost throughout the year, and is widely recognized as the most suitable production area for small-bean coffee. Front Street will guide everyone through these regions one by one to learn about their growing environments and coffee characteristics.
Dehong
Dehong enjoys the reputation of "China's Coffee Hometown." The prefecture's coffee is grown at elevations all above 1,000 meters, with about 30,000 mu distributed in mountainous areas above 1,600 meters. In addition, coffee cultivation in Dehong mainly uses organic fertilizers and organic pesticides, and the coffee produced is of excellent quality, making it one of the rare high-quality coffee-producing areas in the world.

Baoshan
Baoshan's coffee-growing history can be traced back to the mid-1950s, when the first coffee seedling was introduced from Southeast Asia by the late patriotic overseas Chinese Mr. Liang Jinshan. In recent years, with the continuous expansion of international trade, the small-bean coffee of Lujiangba has become widely renowned. Merchants from Europe, America, and Arab countries, especially those from the United Kingdom, the United States, Egypt, and Hong Kong and Macao, regard Baoshan coffee as a premium product, and demand has long exceeded supply. In December 2010, after review by China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, "Baoshan Small-Bean Coffee" officially obtained national geographical indication product protection.
Lincang
Lincang is located in southwestern Yunnan Province, with the Tropic of Cancer running across its southern part. Lincang borders Pu'er to the east, Dali to the north, Baoshan to the west, and Myanmar to the southwest. It is named for being near the Lancang River and is a pearl on the southwestern frontier of the motherland. Lincang's average annual temperature is between 16.8°C and 17.2°C, with distinct dry and wet seasons and excellent sunshine conditions. Its unique geographical location and climatic conditions have attracted the attention of many coffee companies. Locally, high-quality coffee seedling bases of 200 mu and 100 mu were established in Mengding Town of Gengma Autonomous County and Lincang Xingfu Farm, respectively, and coffee cultivation was promoted in Gengma, Zhenkang, Yunxian, Cangyuan, Yongde, and other places.
FrontStreet Coffee has established its own estate in Yunnan's Lincang production area. In 2021, FrontStreet Coffee produced its first self-produced coffee beans. FrontStreet Coffee's bean list has always included a Yunnan washed Typica Huaguoshan coffee bean.
FrontStreet Coffee currently has two Yunnan small-bean coffees, one of the Catimor variety and the other of the Typica variety. Because Catimor carries Robusta genes, its flavor performance is somewhat inferior to Typica.
Pu'er
Pu'er, the hometown of tea, has a 150-year history of coffee cultivation. In the late 1990s, Pu'er City began cultivating the coffee industry as an advantageous backbone industry for adjusting the industrial structure and promoting farmers' income growth.
Yunnan coffee bean varieties
The most widely planted variety in Yunnan at present is Catimor, while a small amount of Typica and Bourbon is still retained in the Baoshan area. Although these varieties all belong broadly to the Arabica species, there are essential differences among them.
Typica coffee beans (typica): the most classic high-quality Arabica variety, from which many commercial improved varieties originate. Typica has excellent flavor expression and is recognized as a specialty coffee variety, but its yield is very low, and it is susceptible to rust disease, requiring more labor for management. Typica originated in Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan and is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in the Western Hemisphere. The plant is relatively robust but not tolerant of strong light, and it yields relatively high in Hawaii. Typica's top leaves are copper-red, so it is also called red-top coffee.

Bourbon coffee beans (bourbon): this variety originated from Typica and gradually spread after being planted by the French on Bourbon Island (now Réunion) in 1708. Bourbon also has a charming aroma and rich taste. Compared with Typica, it is somewhat stronger in yield and growth vigor and is suitable for planting at elevations of 1,200 to 2,000 meters, but its resistance to pests and diseases is relatively weak, and it is also relatively sensitive to strong winds and heavy rainfall. Bourbon is the variety second only to Typica among small-bean coffees. The main branches initially grow upward at 45 degrees to the trunk and gradually droop as fruit load increases. The side branches have relatively dense internodes and bear many fruits, with relatively high yields, but the berries are smaller and ripen more slowly. Bourbon's young top buds and leaves are green, so it is called green-top coffee.
Catimor coffee beans (catimor): Catimor does not have pure Arabica lineage. It is a hybrid descendant of the Timor variety (belonging to Robusta) and caturra (a variety of Bourbon), and therefore carries about 25% Robusta genes. This lineage also determines its flavor defects: the aroma is not rich enough, the overall bitterness is relatively heavy, and it easily develops astringency and a rather harsh moldy taste.
FrontStreet Coffee—Yunnan Typica coffee beans
About five or six years ago, FrontStreet Coffee began introducing Typica in Yunnan's Baoshan production area and produced a representative product with the characteristics of Yunnan coffee—Front Street 2013 Typica coffee beans.
The main Yunnan coffee variety grown by Front Street is Typica, an Arabica variety with excellent flavor, and it is used to document the long experimental journey of Yunnan specialty coffee. At the same time, Typica's yield is very low, only one-third that of Catimor, so its price is higher. In addition, Typica and Bourbon are both highly susceptible to rust disease, which is also one of the biggest reasons farmers are unwilling to grow these two so-called "old varieties" of coffee.
Yunnan does not have four seasons, only a dry season and a rainy season, and most coffee-producing areas show similar climatic characteristics, which is also the fundamental reason some production areas adopt the natural sun-dried processing method. Every year in June the rainy season begins, followed by three or four months of continuous rainfall, which is the most favorable period for growing coffee. Only by planting seedlings during this stage, and after months of nourishment from rain, can they develop a well-developed root system to survive the first dry season, which lasts as long as half a year.
FrontStreet Coffee brewing suggestions
Regarding coffee brewing, Front Street recommends using freshly roasted coffee beans, as this allows you to experience the coffee's rich flavors to the greatest extent. The coffee beans shipped by FrontStreet Coffee are all within 5 days after roasting, because Front Street deeply understands that freshness has an enormous impact on flavor. Front Street's roasting principle is "freshly roasted good coffee," so that every customer who places an order can receive the freshest product when the coffee arrives. Coffee's resting period is about 4 to 7 days, so by the time customers receive it, it is exactly at its best flavor stage.

Of course, some customers need Front Street to help grind the coffee, and that is no problem either, but Front Street must remind everyone that once coffee beans are ground into powder in advance, they need to be brewed as soon as possible. If it has already been ground into powder, there is no need to rest the beans anymore, because during transportation the pressure produced by carbon dioxide inside the package can also make the coffee flavor rounder, so after receiving the coffee grounds you can immediately brew a cup and taste it.
However, after coffee grounds come into contact with air, they oxidize quickly, and the flavor dissipates faster as well, causing a noticeable decline in quality. Therefore, Front Street recommends buying whole beans and grinding fresh before brewing, so that you can better taste the coffee's flavor.
So what is the flavor of this batch of Front Street's fully self-produced coffee beans like?
Dripper: V60
Water temperature: 88°C
Dose: 15 grams
Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:15
Grind size: fine granulated sugar coarseness (80% passing rate on China standard No. 20 sieve)

After the water in the dripper has completely dripped through, remove the dripper. Time from the start of pouring; the extraction time is 2 minutes 00 seconds. Next, swirl the entire cup of coffee to mix it evenly, then pour it into a cup and taste.
Flavor of Yunnan sun-dried Typica coffee : It has nutty notes, and the mouthfeel is more solid than washed Yunnan coffee. The acidity is slightly lower than washed Typica, but the sweetness is a little higher, with better balance, berry-like acidity, interwoven with brown sugar notes, and a slight tea-like quality.
Flavor of Yunnan small-bean coffee : It smells of fairly obvious nutty aroma. On the palate it shows herbal, chocolate, and caramel flavors, with a faint fruity acidity in the finish.
