How Did Bolivian Coffee Cultivation Develop So Quickly?

Bolivia's specialty coffee has grown fast in recent years through Agricafe and its Sol de la Manana program, run by Pedro Rodriguez and daughter Daniela Rodriguez. Locals have adopted more scientific cultivation methods and better processing equipment. Bolivian washed lots bring rich floral notes and juicy acidity with lemon and papaya aromas, while the cacao natural process shifts the cup toward cocoa.

2017 Was the program's first production year, and yields doubled to about 20 bags per hectare. Participation grew from ten farmers to more than 50. The support aims at quality plus social and economic sustainability, giving growers a virtuous cycle of returns. Varieties such as Caturra and Catuai grow around 1,800 meters under a smallholder system.

Front Street - Bolivian Coffee Introduction

Under the guidance of professional teams, local farmers have gradually mastered more scientific cultivation methods and adopted better-performing processing equipment. These supports not only aim to improve quality but also take into account social responsibility and economic sustainability, enabling growers to benefit in a virtuous cycle. It is precisely this active support and guidance that has driven the rapid growth of Bolivian specialty coffee in recent years.

2017 was the first production year of the program, and the yield had already doubled, reaching about 20 bags per hectare. At the same time, the program grew from the initial ten participating farmers to now over 50.

As Daniela Rodriguez said:

“We are giving them the tools and know-how, but they are actively choosing to follow our advice and invest in their farms. Now they can see the results, they trust us 100% and helping their neighbours achieve similar results.”

Pedro Rodriguez has been engaged in coffee cultivation in Bolivia for over 30 years and is one of the pioneers of Bolivia's specialty coffee industry. In 2012, he founded Agricafé Coffee Company to guide the local specialty coffee cultivation industry, and runs it together with his daughter Daniela Rodriguez and son Pedro Pablo Rodriguez.

Agricafé owns and operates 12 original coffee farms, the state-of-the-art Buena Vista wet mill and Cupping Room, as well as a thriving dry milling and export business near La Paz. They have also successfully connected local smallholder farmers with high-value specialty markets through the Sol de la Mañana program, achieving a win-win cooperation.
