What Makes Kenya Coffee From Chania Estate Distinct?

Chania Estate sits in the Thika region of Kenya's Central Province, named for the Chania River that runs through it. Annual rainfall above 760 mm, deep red volcanic soil and wide day-night temperature swings support coffee cultivation there. The Harries family has farmed the area since 1904, and Front Street Coffee sells the estate's French Mission Bourbon natural batch.

French Mission is the original Bourbon variety brought in by French missionaries at the end of the 19th century, planted at roughly 1,525 meters with about 800 mm of rain. The natural process yields tropical fruit, floral notes, grapes, blackcurrants, strawberries and winey aromas, a profile shaped in part by processing guidance from Café Imports.

Chania Estate is located in the Thika region of Kenya's Central Province, named after the Chania River that flows through it. With annual rainfall exceeding 760 mm, deep red volcanic soil, and stark day-night temperature differences, it offers exceptional conditions for coffee cultivation. The estate belongs to the Harries family business, which has been rooted in Thika since 1904 and has grown coffee for nearly a century. This time, Front Street Coffee's Kenya coffee features the French Mission Bourbon natural process batch from this estate, presenting a complex flavor profile of full tropical fruits, floral notes, grapes, blackcurrants, strawberries, and winey aromas intertwined. Behind this bean lies not only a long history of missionary introduction but also the unique insights of Jason Long from Café Imports on natural processing.

The green bean variety of this Front Street Coffee Kenya coffee requires starting from its historical context. French Mission is the original Bourbon variety introduced by French missionaries at the end of the 19th century. Kenya has annual rainfall of about 760 mm, average temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius, and deep red volcanic soil. These nearly perfect natural conditions allow the genetic advantages of this variety to be fully expressed.

Chania Estate is a medium-sized coffee estate owned by A.I.R. Harries and Son Ltd, a family business located in Thika Town, Central Province, Kenya. The Harries family has been settled in the Thika area since 1904 and has been engaged in coffee cultivation for nearly a century. The family once donated more than 50 acres of land to the Thika Municipal Council and participated in co-founding Wabeni Technical Institute, aimed at teaching practical skills such as sewing, electrical mechanics, and woodworking to underprivileged children to help them make a living.

The estate's coffee-growing area was originally 180 acres but has been reduced by 90 acres over the past two years, producing about 120 tons of parchment beans annually. The varieties planted on the estate include French Mission, K7, SL28, SL34, SL14, Ruiru11, and others. The estate has 20 permanent employees, including some third-generation family members. During the peak harvest season, up to 120 additional workers are hired.

The idea for this naturally processed Front Street Coffee Kenya green bean came from Jason Long of Café Imports, who said:

Chania is one of the few large estates in Kenya that still retains French Mission, and SL-34 appears to be more closely related to French Mission Bourbon than to SL-28, which is precisely the root that gives Front Street Coffee Kenya its unique blackcurrant fruit bomb and grape flavors. Additionally, I often cup lemon flavors in French Mission. I do not like naturally processed coffees from all origins; I deeply love Ethiopian natural beans because the green beans themselves possess highly unique flavors, and after natural processing, you can achieve a perfect integration of natural process flavors and the uniqueness of the green bean itself. For me, Front Street Coffee Kenya green beans also possess highly recognizable flavors, and the story begins here.
