Which Arabica coffee bean varieties shape flavor and bean form?

Arabica coffee bean varieties differ in both green bean shape and cup profile, and those differences are visible before roasting. Typica shows an oval, thin-sided bean with a clean, balanced base wherever it grows. Bourbon runs rounder and smaller. Caturra, Catuai, Geisha, SL28 and SL34 each carry their own appearance and flavor tendencies, which makes shape a useful first clue when sorting green coffee.

Origin and processing reinforce what the bean shape suggests. Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1, Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Red Label, Brazil Queen Farm Yellow Bourbon and Kenya Asaliya each bring distinct cup character shaped by altitude, variety and method. Cupping several geisha green coffee samples side by side shows how much a single variety can shift once terroir and processing are factored in.

The Arabica family has many members, and different varieties each have their own characteristics in bean shape and flavor. This article focuses on common Arabica varieties such as Typica, Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Geisha, and SL28 and SL34, combining Front Street Coffee's cupping experience and specific products to sort out their green bean appearance characteristics and brewing performance. From Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 to Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Red Label, from Brazil Queen Farm Yellow Bourbon to Kenya Asaliya, the article analyzes each variety's origin, processing method, and flavor profile one by one, helping coffee enthusiasts build a systematic understanding of Arabica varieties and also providing reference for daily bean selection.

In past articles related to coffee beans, Front Street Coffee mostly focused on the origins of Arabica coffee beans. This time, let's take a different angle and introduce the common Arabica varieties seen in daily life, looking at their green bean appearance and corresponding flavor trends.

Typica

The green bean shape of Typica is similar to the long beans among native Arabica varieties, oval-shaped, and the bean body appears thin when observed from the side. Even if there are differences in planting altitude, the thickness change on the side of the green bean will not be too obvious. Front Street Coffee has cupped Typica from different origins and found that no matter where it is planted, this variety retains a clear and clean flavor base, overall balanced, and its taste characteristics have also spread to coffee-producing regions around the world. More representative coffees include: Front Street Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, Front Street Yunnan Small-Molecule Coffee, Front Street Papua New Guinea Paradise Bird, etc.

Bourbon

The green bean shape of Bourbon is relatively round and small. In recent years, improved Bourbon varieties have become larger and plumper. From the side, green beans grown in low-altitude regions will be slightly thinner than those from high-altitude regions. Front Street Coffee has cupped Bourbon coffee from different regions, and it usually has good aroma performance, bright acidity, and even a red-wine-like character when drunk. More commonly familiar beans include: Front Street Brazil Queen Farm Yellow Bourbon, Front Street Brazil Cerrado Red Bourbon, Front Street Colombia Pink Bourbon, etc.

Brewing Flavor: The fresh sweetness of sugarcane juice, black tea, soft and smooth fruit sweetness, obvious nutty flavor, balanced and smooth acidity, weak and clean bitterness, rich chocolate aroma and nutty flavor, bright and refreshing taste, smooth and delicate mouthfeel.

Caturra

Caturra's appearance is very close to Bourbon, making it somewhat difficult to distinguish. As can be seen from the pictures, the tail end of the Caturra variety is slightly more curved than Bourbon, and round yet slender is its appearance label. Front Street Coffee has cupped Central American Caturra coffee beans separately, and the flavor is overall bright with good sweetness. In coffees such as Front Street Colombia Rose Valley, Front Street Honduras Sherry, and Front Street Guatemala La Flor, all of which Front Street has brought in, Caturra can be found.

It has both the high-quality sweet-and-sour taste of black grapes and a silky mouthfeel like cream toffee.

Catuai

Catuai is a hybrid of Caturra and Mundo Novo, combining Caturra's slender round body with Mundo Novo's flat shape. Simply put, it looks round and flat, but the tail end is somewhat slender. After cupping, Front Street Coffee found that this variety has excellent acidity, a clean taste, and fruity aroma. On Front Street's bean list, Front Street Costa Rica Beethoven, Front Street Panama Elida Catuai, and others all involve Catuai.

Geisha

Geisha green coffee beans are overall plump, with pointed and elongated ends. Front Street believes that the high-altitude Panama Geisha variety has obvious floral aroma and delicate, elegant fruit acidity, and this elegant flavor is also one of the reasons it has swept the world.

Front Street Coffee——Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Red Label Coffee Beans Region: Panama Boquete Estate: Hacienda La Esmeralda El Velo Altitude: 1600=1800m Variety: Geisha Processing Method: Natural Brewing Flavor: It smells of ginger flower and citrus, with ripe fruit, black tea, citrus, and sweet-and-sour fruit tea flavors on the palate, a berry sweetness in the aftertaste, and a relatively lasting sweet finish.

SL28&SL34

SL28's bean appearance is close to Bourbon, round-bodied and plump, and in recent years genetic testing has also confirmed that it belongs to the Bourbon genetic group. SL34's bean appearance is close to Typica. Front Street screened out beans resembling Typica's bean appearance from Kenyan beans, with a slender bean body, oval shape, and a relatively flat side profile. SL34 and SL28 have similar flavors. In addition to complex and varied acidity and a great sweet finish, SL34's mouthfeel is heavier, richer, and cleaner than SL28.

Front Street Coffee——Kenya Asaliya Coffee Beans Region: Kenya Thika Altitude: 1550-1750m Variety: SL28, SL34 Processing Method: 72-hour Washed Processing Brewing Flavor: The palate has flavors of smoked plum and cherry tomato, with strong and full-bodied acidity, prominent mid-palate sweetness, juicy feel, berry aroma and brown sugar sweetness in the aftertaste, and green tea aroma.
