Black coffee is coffee without any added sugar, milk, or other extras. The Americano, pour-over coffee, and the clear coffee made from freeze-dried powder that we commonly see are all types of black coffee. Below, Front Street Coffee will discuss the most popular type of black coffee—the Americano.

How did the Americano come about?

The ingredients of an Americano are very simple—just espresso and water. Espresso, as the name suggests, comes from Italy in Europe. Espresso was developed specifically to speed up coffee-making. Originally, espresso referred to a method of making coffee; "espres" means "fast," meaning a cup of black coffee could be made in a very short time.

The rise of the Americano dates back to the 18th century. At that time, Americans were extremely dissatisfied with the British government's expensive tea import tariffs, which led to the Boston Tea Party in 1773 and a call to switch to drinking coffee. Gradually, the number of coffeehouses in America continued to expand, driving the coffee industry to flourish in the United States. By the 1880s, about one-third of the world's coffee beans were sold to the United States. During World War II, American Allied forces consumed large amounts of coffee every day to relieve the monotony of life and to boost soldiers' spirits.

However, Italians were accustomed to drinking intensely flavored espresso, and American soldiers could not get used to such strong bitterness. So they diluted the coffee liquid with water to reach a concentration they could accept. Later, Italians who opened coffeehouses in America also "did as the Romans do" and introduced a "watered-down coffee" based on espresso, which became very popular. Eventually, this "watered-down coffee" came to be called "Americano."

What are the characteristics of an Americano?

Since no milk, sugar, or other extras are added, an Americano allows you to taste more of the coffee beans' original flavor and aroma, and it also places greater demands on the flavor and quality of the espresso. The coffee beans used in Front Street Coffee's stores are their own roasted "Sunflower Warm Sun Blend," composed of 70% Honduras Sherry coffee and 30% Yirgacheffe sun-dried Red Cherry coffee. The Sherry's whiskey, vanilla, and cream flavors combined with Red Cherry's tropical fruit and fermented notes make the coffee in the cup rich in aroma and soft in mouthfeel.

When making an Americano, Front Street Coffee grinds the coffee beans into powder and extracts espresso at a 1:2 coffee-to-water ratio, then pours it into water to dilute it—that is, using 20 grams of coffee powder to extract 40 grams of coffee liquid. Based on Front Street Coffee's repeated experiments and adjustments, a 1:6 ratio of coffee liquid to water is most suitable for expressing the Warm Sun's aroma. That is, pour 40 grams of coffee liquid into 240 grams of 88°C hot water, and the hot Americano is complete.

If making an iced Americano, replace the hot water with 120 grams of ice cubes and 120 grams of room-temperature water. The taste is best before the ice melts. Front Street Coffee's iced Americano presents a fresh and pleasant sweet-and-sour flavor, making it easy to accept even for those who do not often drink coffee.

Why is the Americano so popular?

The reason the Americano is so sought after by everyone is not only its moderate strength and approachable taste; drinking one Americano a day in moderation also helps us aid digestion, cut greasiness, and reduce bodily edema. In addition, because it is very low in calories, it can boost the body's metabolism, and drinking it one hour before exercise can also help burn fat, making it one of the drinks recommended by many fitness enthusiasts. However, Front Street Coffee still needs to remind everyone that only pure Americano has certain benefits; Americano with added syrup, condensed milk, or non-dairy creamer brings extra calories and is not good for our health if consumed over the long term.

Whether Americano is healthy is a long-standing global topic, but the current medical consensus is that drinking Americano in moderation has no adverse effects on health, does not increase the risk of certain cancers, and may even be beneficial to the body. Front Street Coffee suggests that no more than 3 cups of Americano (or black coffee) per day is beneficial and not harmful to the body, but this also depends on each person's constitution. If we tend to experience insomnia or stomach discomfort after drinking coffee, then we should not consume too much caffeine.
