What Makes Yirgacheffe Aricha G1 Green Coffee Bean Distinct?
Yirgacheffe Aricha G1 is an Ethiopian specialty coffee from the Gediyo zone, grown at 1,900 to 2,100 meters and graded G1. It is sold in two processing styles. The washed version shows light fermented wine aroma, sweet orange, spice, and honey sweetness. The natural version, dried with the fruit, leans toward tropical fruit acidity, berry notes, and a heavier finish.
Aricha comes from the Kebel Aricha processing station, where roughly 650 to 700 smallholder farmers deliver ripe cherries for cash. Ethiopia's high altitude, low rainfall, and long sunlight hours suit sun-drying, so natural lots ferment longer and absorb sugars from the pulp. The washed lot from Front Street keeps a medium-light roast to highlight acidity, a common approach across arabica coffee varieties from the region.
Yirgacheffe Aricha G1 is a star product among Ethiopian specialty coffees, and its two processing methods—natural and washed—each have distinctive characteristics. This article will comprehensively analyze the core features of Aricha G1 coffee beans, from terroir and processing techniques to variety grade and flavor expression. The article also specifically introduces the product details of Front Street brand's Red Cherry and Yirgacheffe, including roasting approach, cupping flavors, and the historical origins of Aricha and Idido, helping coffee enthusiasts gain a deeper understanding of this bean's unique charm and key tasting points.

Ethiopia has natural conditions of high altitude, low rainfall, and long sunlight hours, and these factors provide an ideal environment for the sun-drying of green coffee beans. The so-called natural method is to harvest ripe coffee cherries and then spread them out directly to dry in the sun.
During the natural drying process, the sugars and aromatic substances contained in the fruit pulp are better preserved and gradually penetrate into the green coffee beans. At the same time, the longer the drying period, the more complete the fermentation. Because the natural method allows the fruit to dry naturally, the coffee beans mature inside the fruit skin and are less affected by the external environment. Therefore, natural beans often amplify their own flavors, showing more prominent tropical fruit acidity and berry notes than washed beans, with fuller fermentation notes and sweetness, and a heavier finish. Front Street Red Cherry on the Front Street bean list is precisely a naturally processed Yirgacheffe.

In terms of roasting, Front Street considered that Front Street Red Cherry should take acidity as its main flavor direction, so it chose a medium-light roast. Through cupping, Front Street Natural Red Cherry showed the following flavors and mouthfeel.

This batch of Front Street Yirgacheffe comes from the Kebel Aricha processing station, with about 650 to 700 smallholder coffee farmers nearby. Farmers deliver ripe coffee cherries here for processing in exchange for cash. After sorting usable cherries, the processing station places them directly on raised beds to sun-dry, turning them once every 2 to 3 hours in the first few days to avoid over-fermentation. After four to six weeks of sun-drying, workers remove the outer fruit pulp with machines according to weather and temperature conditions, then transport it to Addis for storage. Naturally processed beans are usually stored in parchment form and only hulled before export to ensure green bean quality. This batch of Front Street Natural Aricha was rated G1, the highest grade, by ECX, and performs excellently in green bean appearance, consistency, freshness, dry aroma, and flavor. If you like bright acidity and rich berry flavors, you absolutely must not miss it!

About the difference and relationship between Aricha and Idido
The Aricha processing station is located in Misty Valley, the most famous micro-region of Yirgacheffe in Ethiopia. Aricha was originally named Idido and was then owned by the renowned Abdullah Bagersh. Coffee produced by Bagersh would be marked Idido Misty Valley (IMV), and the jute bags would also bear the prominent Bagersh name, which could almost be regarded as a guarantee of top-grade Ethiopian coffee. Times have changed, and the Aricha/Idido washed processing station no longer belongs to Abdullah Bagersh. However, according to Sweet Maria's visit records, because most local employees were retained, Bagersh's processing procedures and standards have still been continued to a large extent, and quality has therefore remained stable.
About Project Origin
Sasa Sestic is the 2015 World Barista Champion. Three years ago, he and the commercial team ONA Coffee launched a green bean sourcing project called Project Origin. The project works directly with coffee farmers in poor countries and regions, improves their production conditions, and gives them a purchase price 20% higher than fair trade prices.
The original intention of this project also included strengthening the connection between roasters and coffee farmers and guiding coffee farmers to grow high-quality coffee beans. So far, Sasa has established relationships with coffee growers from eight countries, including Brazil, Panama, India, Ethiopia, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.
