Blue Mountain Coffee: what makes it authentic?

Blue Mountain coffee is a protected name for beans grown in Jamaica's Blue Mountain range. Only coffee planted in designated zones between 1,000 and 1,700 meters above sea level, across Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland and Saint Mary, may be sold as Blue Mountain coffee. Trees above 1,700 meters sit in an ecological reserve where cash crops are banned.

Beans grown between 460 and 910 meters are sold as Jamaica High Mountain Coffee, and anything below 460 meters as Jamaica Prime Coffee. Within the Blue Mountain name, beans are graded Blue Mountain No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, and authenticity can be checked through wooden barrel packaging and export certificates.

What exactly is Blue Mountain coffee? Why do some cafes sell it at a not-so-exorbitant price, while others charge an outrageous amount? This article systematically breaks down the core knowledge of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans, from origin definition, grade classification, variety characteristics, and historical price factors to brewing parameters. It also explains how to identify authentic Blue Mountain through wooden barrel packaging and export certificates, introduces the differences between the washed and natural versions from Clifton Estate, and shares Front Street Coffee's medium-dark roast recommendations and Kono dripper brewing method, helping coffee lovers build a complete understanding of Blue Mountain coffee.

A while ago, a customer mentioned while chatting with a barista at Front Street Coffee: "In my impression, Blue Mountain coffee has always been expensive and hard to come by. But in recent years, many cafes are selling Blue Mountain. The price isn't cheap, but it's not as exaggerated as I imagined. As an ordinary consumer, how exactly should I tell whether a cup of Blue Mountain is authentic?"

The Definition of Blue Mountain Coffee

The conditions for using the name "Blue Mountain Coffee" are extremely strict. It can be compared to how wine is classified by estate or variety. Within Jamaica, only coffee produced in one region is qualified to bear this name — the renowned Blue Mountain range.

The Blue Mountain range lies in the eastern part of the island of Jamaica and is the highest mountain area locally, with the main peak reaching about 2,256 meters. However, coffee trees can only be planted in designated zones between 1,000 and 1,700 meters above sea level, involving four parishes: Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland, and Saint Mary. Areas above 1,700 meters belong to Jamaica's ecological reserve, where planting any cash crops is prohibited.

Coffee produced between 460 and 910 meters above sea level can only be sold under the name "Jamaica High Mountain Coffee"; below 460 meters, it can only be called "Jamaica Prime Coffee."

Being planted in a designated area does not necessarily make it Blue Mountain No. 1

"Blue Mountain No. 1" actually corresponds to a grade of Blue Mountain coffee beans. Blue Mountain coffee beans are divided into three grades: Blue Mountain No. 1, Blue Mountain No. 2, and Blue Mountain No. 3.

Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans require 96% of the coffee cherries to reach a size of 17 screen or above, and after processing, the defect rate must not exceed 2%;

Blue Mountain No. 2 coffee beans require 96% of the coffee cherries to reach a size of 16 screen or above, and after processing, the defect rate must not exceed 2%;

Blue Mountain No. 3 coffee beans require 96% of the coffee cherries to reach a size of 15 screen or above, and after processing, the defect rate must not exceed 2%;

Blue Mountain peaberry requires 96% of the coffee cherries to reach a size of 10 screen or above, and after processing, the defect rate must not exceed 2%.

How do you tell whether Blue Mountain coffee beans are authentic?

Currently, Blue Mountain coffee imported into China is basically mainly Blue Mountain No. 1, and all of it is shipped in wooden barrels. Jamaica is the only producing region in the world that uses wooden barrels to hold coffee beans, so wooden barrels are an important basis for identifying the authenticity of Blue Mountain coffee.

In addition, the Jamaican government has set strict requirements and standards for the export of Blue Mountain coffee. Coffee beans that meet the regulations are issued an export certificate by the Jamaica Coffee Board. At Front Street Coffee's physical store, you can see the relevant wooden barrels and certificates.

What variety are Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans?

The coffee trees planted in the Blue Mountain range are all Typica, which is also one of the oldest varieties in the Arabica line, known for its clean and serene flavor. The coffee estate Front Street established in Lincang, Yunnan, also grows Typica. After natural processing and medium roasting, the coffee shows a balanced taste, with notes of brown sugar, nuts, and dried apricot on the palate.

In the 1720s, the first coffee tree was transplanted from Martinique to the Jamaican Blue Mountains. After more than two hundred years, Blue Mountain Typica has evolved stronger disease resistance, especially outperforming ordinary Typica in resistance to coffee berry disease. Coupled with the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Blue Mountain range and the microclimate of year-round warmth and abundant rainfall, high-altitude Blue Mountain coffee beans possess a clear, sweet, and delicate aroma that is difficult for other producing regions to replicate, with balanced acidity, sweetness, and bitterness and a full body, winning over many coffee connoisseurs.

Why is Blue Mountain coffee so expensive?

Is Blue Mountain No. 1 the most expensive coffee bean?

Blue Mountain coffee beans do not have a high yield, with annual production of only 600 to 1,000 tons. In 1969, the Blue Mountain region suffered hurricane damage, and the coffee industry fell into difficulty for a time. Japanese companies provided loans to help Blue Mountain coffee recover to normal levels and stabilize the market. To express gratitude, Jamaica signed an agreement with Japan in 1972, granting Japanese estate shares and priority purchasing rights, and 90% of Blue Mountain coffee was sold to Japan after maturing. Therefore, the amount of Blue Mountain coffee other countries could purchase was very small, and prices remained high. However, in recent years this situation has changed somewhat.

During that period, Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee almost never flowed into the Chinese market, and being able to drink authentic Blue Mountain was truly not easy. It was not until 2012 that the Jamaican government canceled Japan's priority purchasing rights, and other countries had more opportunities to import Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee.

Although Blue Mountain coffee is still relatively expensive today, it is no longer the most expensive coffee bean. Geisha coffee beans from the Panama producing region can reach more than 40,000 yuan per pound, far beyond the price of Blue Mountain coffee.

Where can you buy authentic Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans?

Authentic Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans can be purchased at Front Street Coffee's physical store and Taobao flagship store. The Blue Mountain No. 1 sold by Front Street Coffee comes from Clifton Estate, the largest estate in the Blue Mountain range, with a growing altitude of 1,310 meters.

Clifton Estate is an ancient coffee origin in Jamaica that is still operating normally today, and it is also the only estate in Jamaica with Rainforest Alliance certification. This certification can only be obtained by meeting the "sustainable agriculture system standards," and its wooden barrels are printed with the rainforest certification mark.

Before 2020, Blue Mountain No. 1 always used washed Typica coffee beans. In 2020, Clifton Estate launched natural-processed Blue Mountain coffee beans, so now Blue Mountain coffee beans come in two versions: washed and natural. Washed Blue Mountain is overall cleaner, with a flavor more inclined toward balanced acidity, sweetness, and bitterness; natural Blue Mountain also performs excellently, but compared with the washed version, it has more berry-juice-like fullness, more prominent acidity, and is overall less balanced than washed Blue Mountain.

However, natural Blue Mountain was only launched for one year. Due to mediocre market response, in 2022 there was temporarily no news of natural-processed Blue Mountain coffee beans.

How should Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans be roasted?

In order to preserve Blue Mountain coffee's balanced acidity, sweetness, and bitterness and its rich, solid body, Front Street Coffee uses a medium-dark roast level. Since all shipped coffee is freshly roasted within 5 days, you do not need to rush to drink it when you receive the Blue Mountain coffee beans. Keep the coffee beans sealed in their original packaging until 5 to 6 days after the roast date before starting to brew, and the flavor will perform even better.

How should Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans be brewed?

To avoid over-extraction, Front Street Coffee recommends using a lower water temperature for extraction, while using the slower-flow Kono dripper, with the aim of extracting as much coffee material as possible under low-temperature conditions. The specific parameters are: Kono dripper, 88°C water temperature, 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, 15 grams of coffee, grind size (70-75% passing through a No. 20 standard sieve).

The brewing method is as follows: pour 30 grams of water in the first stage for blooming, with a blooming time of 30 seconds; in the second stage, pour water until about 125 grams, then wait for the coffee liquid to drop. When it has dropped by half, pour the final stage of water until 225 grams, and finish extraction after all the coffee liquid has dripped through. The total extraction time is generally about 2 minutes and 10 seconds.

The flavor performance of Front Street Coffee's washed Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee: rich notes of dark chocolate and nuts, a creamy and smooth mouthfeel, and balanced acidity, sweetness, and bitterness.
