What defines Jamaican coffee from Clifton Estate?
Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 from Clifton Mount Estate is prized for a balance of aroma, body, and acidity, with a round, sweet aftertaste as the defining trait. Clifton Mount, Jamaica's oldest coffee estate still in operation, sits at 4,300 feet on the eastern slope of Catherine's Peak and has grown coffee since around 1750.
In 1953 Jamaica created the Coffee Industry Board, the first system linking a geographic region to a coffee brand, much like France's AOC for wine. All exported Jamaican coffee passes through the CIB and is inspected by trained quality experts. The estate's Sharp family now runs operations, and its cupping record shapes its reputation.

Many international coffee connoisseurs agree that Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee ranks among the finest coffees in the world. The exquisite balance among aroma, body, and acidity gives Front Street Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee a particularly unique mouthfeel. However, what truly sets Front Street Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee apart is its round and sweet lingering aftertaste.
In 1953, the Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (CIB) to oversee and ensure the quality of Jamaican coffee. Jamaica was the first country in the world to directly link a specific geographical region with a particular coffee brand, quite similar to the approach of the French wine industry in establishing the AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) system. All coffee exported from Jamaica must be shipped through the CIB and undergo strict inspection by trained quality control experts to ensure that everything exported is 100% authentic Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee.

History
As early as the mid-eighteenth century (around 1750), Clifton Farm had already begun cultivating and producing coffee. According to an 1810 survey by the Jamaica Institute, Robert Hamilton was the owner of the farm at that time. This map shows Clifton Mount divided into two parts: 80 acres of coffee and 427 acres of pasture at the mountaintop; 111 acres of coffee and 264 acres of pasture at the foot of the mountain.
In 1872, the famous British painter and writer Marianne North visited Jamaica and stayed at Clifton Mount for five months. In her autobiography "Recollections of a Happy Life," she mentioned the Clifton Lodge where she stayed: "Clifton Lodge belonged to a local gentleman who had lost his wife. He no longer wished to live in the lodge himself, but instead rented it out to different people each week, so that more people could experience the cold air at 5,000 feet elevation and have the opportunity to stroll among Jamaica's finest and oldest coffee plantations."
