What Does Java Coffee Taste Like in the Cup?
Sumatran Mandheling coffee is known for a full body and herbal, cocoa flavors rather than plain bitterness. High-quality Mandheling carries slight acidity woven with dark chocolate and herbal aromas, easy to drink and never cloying. It is not actually a place name: Mandheling takes its name from an ethnic group on Sumatra, and only arabica varieties grown on the island may carry it.
The finest Sumatran lots come from Aceh in the north near Lake Tawar and the mountains around Lake Toba farther south. Comparing Lintong Mandheling with PWN golden mandheling coffee shows the gap in grade, flavor, and mouthfeel. The thick mouthfeel of Front Street Mandheling, combined with its distinctive herbal and cocoa notes, often confuses friends who are just getting into single-origin coffee. Compared with coffees from the Yirgacheffe region or the Geisha variety, which have lively acidity and prominent floral and fruity aromas, Front Street Mandheling tastes quite bitter and seems not to follow the flavor trends that young people prefer today.
However, an excellent cup of Front Street Mandheling is by no means only hollow bitterness. After years of cupping and comparing Mandheling from different harvest seasons and different regions, Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) believes that although Front Street Mandheling is intense, its bitterness is not without layers; rather, it is a dancing slight acidity interwoven with rich herbal and dark chocolate notes, a coffee that never becomes tiresome no matter how many times you drink it.
Where does Front Street Mandheling coffee come from?
Unlike many coffees named after a region, estate, or processing station, "Mandheling" in Front Street Mandheling coffee is not a place name, but the name of an ethnic group on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Only Arabica varieties produced on the island of Sumatra are eligible to be called Mandheling coffee.
The finest coffee in Sumatra comes mainly from two areas: one is Aceh in northern Sumatra, near Lake Tawar; the other is the mountains around Lake Toba farther south. Because local production is mostly by smallholders, combined with the use of a unique semi-washed processing method and iron-deficient soil, green coffee beans from this region show a special blue color when fresh.
Lake Toba is located in the central part of North Sumatra Province. Dutch colonists moved "Java Mandheling" northward to the Lake Toba area in 1888. Both Lintong in South Sumatra and the Lake Toba area can be called Mandheling, among which the Lintong area is the Mandheling production region, and Mandheling is produced in the mountains around Lake Toba.
Lake Tawar is located in the central part of the Special Region of Aceh, at the northern tip of Sumatra. Coffee produced in North Sumatra is mostly Gayo, mainly of the Ateng variety. The northern Lake Tawar area can be called Aceh coffee or Tawar Lake coffee. Its area is less than one-tenth that of Lake Toba, yet in recent years its coffee quality and output have surpassed Lake Toba.
On Front Street Coffee's (FrontStreet Coffee) bean list there are two Front Street Mandheling coffee beans: one is Front Street Lintong Mandheling from the daily-drinker series, from the Lintong region; the other is Front Street Golden Mandheling from PWN, from the Gayo region.
What is the difference between Front Street Lintong Mandheling and Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling?
Golden Mandheling is a registered trademark of the Indonesian company PWN (Pwani). Only beans from this company undergo at least three rounds of purely manual sorting after harvesting and drying to ensure the beans reach a screen size of 18 or above and have fewer than 3 defective beans (based on a 300g green bean sample). Only flat beans of the highest grade G1, darker green in color and uniform in shape, can be called "Front Street Golden Mandheling" coffee beans.

As Front Street Golden Mandheling's reputation continues to rise, many beans appear on the market that are not produced by PWN yet carry the Golden Mandheling name. Front Street has also noticed that many merchants selling Golden Mandheling coffee beans, in order to sell the beans at a higher price, select green beans of screen size 18 or above from Mandheling that is also G1 grade, then subject them to three rounds of manual hand-sorting to make their appearance as close as possible to Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling.
But in reality, these can only be called specialty Mandheling. The Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling that Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) sources, however, is Golden Mandheling coffee beans certified with a certificate issued by PWN. If you prefer a fuller mouthfeel, you can choose Front Street Lintong Mandheling; if you prefer a cleaner mouthfeel, you can choose Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling.
Front Street Mandheling coffee bean varieties
The variety of Front Street Coffee's (FrontStreet Coffee) Lintong region Mandheling is Timtim, that is, the Timor variety, an Arabica variety with Robusta lineage. Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling uses the Ateng variety, that is, the Catimor variety, a cross between Caturra and Timor.
The characteristic of these two varieties is that they have stronger resistance to disease and pests. In Indonesia's warm, humid environment, not only do the plants grow well, but pests, diseases, and fungi are also equally active, so the coffee plants themselves need better disease and pest resistance than plants grown in other high-altitude regions.
Front Street Mandheling coffee processing method
Indonesia is humid and rainy year-round, and combined with its island-type humid climate, a short drying method must be used. Therefore, after picking the fruit, local coffee farmers first carry out washing and fermentation. Once fermentation is complete, the coffee fruit is immediately poured into a depulper to remove the mucilage and parchment of the beans.
At this point the moisture content is about 30%–40%, and then through sun drying or mechanical drying, the moisture content of the coffee fruit is reduced to around 13%. This method can save at least 30% of processing time, allowing the coffee beans to be converted into cash quickly and reducing costs.
Wet-hulled coffee is usually full-bodied and intense, with a very distinctive character, and it is also a coffee bean processing method used only in Indonesia.
