What does the Guangdong water recall mean for the coffee production process?

Guangdong market regulators published sampling notices for inspection rounds 30 to 33 of 2024, and several bottled water brands, including Luhushan, Alps and Ruishan Tianquan, were listed as non-compliant after Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected. The organism is an opportunistic pathogen and poses a real risk to people with weakened immune systems.

Water is 60 to 70 percent of the human body, and adults need roughly 3 to 5 liters a day, so packaged water quality draws close attention. The same standard applies wherever water meets food: any coffee production process depends on clean, tested water, and the notices underline why regulators advise checking labels and inspection results before buying.

Water makes up 60 to 70 percent of the human body, and adults need to drink 3 to 5 liters of water per day, so drinking water safety is directly related to everyone's health. As consumer demand for packaged drinking water continues to grow, the quality of products labeled "purified" or "mineral" on the market has become a focus of public attention. Recently, the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation published food sampling inspection notices for the 30th to 33rd rounds of 2024, showing that several well-known drinking water brands, including Luhushan, Alps, and Ruishan Tianquan, were placed on the list of non-compliant products after Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected. This opportunistic pathogen poses a significant health risk to people with weakened immune systems. How have the companies involved responded? What purchasing advice have regulators given? This article will sort it out for you in detail.

Water is the source of life, and access to safe drinking water is a basic human requirement. The human body is 60%-70% water, and to maintain basic survival needs, adults should drink at least 3-5 liters of water per day.

In recent years, as public health awareness has increased, more and more consumers have been buying drinking water labeled "purified" or "mineral." How good is the quality of the wide variety of packaged drinking water on the market, and does it meet national food safety standards? These are issues of common concern.

It is understood that drinking water safety refers to a social state in which everyone can obtain, promptly, conveniently, and affordably, water for daily living that meets cleanliness and health requirements. First, the quantity of water must meet daily living needs; second, water quality must meet hygiene requirements, meaning that its sensory properties are good, it contains no pathogenic microorganisms or parasite eggs, and the chemical substances it contains do not cause acute poisoning, chronic poisoning, or long-term harm to the human body.

Recently, the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation successively published notices for the 30th-33rd rounds of food sampling inspections in 2024. The notices showed that on the list of non-compliant foods, several well-known drinking water brands, including Luhushan, Alps, and Ruishan Tianquan, were prominently listed, with regulators detecting Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the drinking water of these common brands.

Guangdong reports multiple batches of drinking water failing sampling inspection: Pseudomonas aeruginosa detected; four steps to master for purchasing safe drinking water

It is reported that Pseudomonas aeruginosa, formerly known as Bacillus pyocyaneus, is widely distributed in nature. It is an opportunistic pathogen that poses a relatively high health risk to people with weaker immunity and can easily cause diseases such as acute enteritis.

So why is this pathogenic bacterium detected in drinking water? The Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation also gave a specific explanation in its notice:

A humid environment is an important condition for the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Exceeding the standard for this bacterium may be caused by contamination of the product's water source or packaging materials, or by cross-contamination of the product during production from personnel, tools, production equipment, or the environment, as well as by incomplete sterilization of the product through disinfection, sterilization, and other production processes.

In response, a reporter from Yangcheng Evening News called the hotlines of Luhushan and Ruishan Tianquan as a consumer to ask whether the brands were aware that the sampling inspection had found them non-compliant.

Meizhou Yuhuagu Mountain Spring Water Co., Ltd. responded that the batch of Luhushan drinking natural spring water involved in the sampling inspection showed that it was produced in May 2024 and came from one of its sales outlets below. At the time, that batch of spring water had been placed under a staircase for a relatively long period, and the day of sampling was also rainy. It was very regrettable that this problem occurred. Subsequently, the company conducted an internal re-inspection, and a third-party institution also randomly sampled more than a dozen batches of products from the factory and multiple stores for testing, all of which showed no abnormalities.

Ruishan Tianquan said: "For the sampled Ruishan Tianquan metasilicic acid-type drinking natural spring water, the batch production date was May 9, 2024. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected in 1 of the 5 barrels, which may have been caused by environmental contamination during transportation. Later, the relevant institution in Meijiang District went to the factory again for re-sampling, and no similar problems occurred."

On how to choose drinking water, regulators introduced the following: first, choose the company, that is, choose a drinking water manufacturer with complete licenses, a legitimate brand, and a good reputation; next, choose the seller, and order water from a legitimate distributor or water station. For water stations of unclear nature, you can go to the station to check whether the licenses are complete or directly consult the manufacturer about its qualifications, so as to avoid choosing an unlicensed water station.

Second, recognize the label, and choose bottled water whose outer packaging label is clear, eye-catching, and easy to identify and read. Finally, pay attention to observing the water quality. Qualified bottled drinking water is colorless, clear, transparent, odorless, free of impurities, free of off-odors and sediment, with a uniform color, and no foreign matter in the water.
