What Does the Sam's Club Juice Tea Incident Mean for Coffee Drinkers?

A Sam's Club member in Nanjing found two foreign objects, one large and one small, in an unopened bottle of Blood Orange Chia Juice Tea Beverage purchased on September 1. The larger item resembled fruit peel; the smaller piece appeared to be black mold. After the store and national customer service were contacted, Sam's Club offered only equivalent-value coupons as compensation.

This incident joins earlier reports from Shenzhen and Changzhou involving insect eggs and foreign objects in food. Complaint data shows Sam's Club received 70 complaints in September alone, many tied to food safety. For members who also buy coffee and related drinks there, the pattern raises questions about quality control across the store's private-label beverage lineup.

Recently, Sam's Club in Nanjing was exposed by a consumer after discovering two foreign objects, one large and one small, in an unopened case of Blood Orange Chia Juice Tea Beverage they purchased, with the smaller piece suspected to be black mold. After unsuccessful communication with the store, Sam's national customer service only offered compensation in the form of equivalent-value coupons. This is not the first time Sam's Club has been embroiled in food safety controversies; previously, Shenzhen, Changzhou, and other locations have successively reported incidents such as milk with attached insect eggs and fresh meat mooncakes containing teeth. Related complaints are common on social platforms, and data from the Black Cat Complaint platform shows that in September alone, Sam's Club received 70 complaints, many involving food safety. As a high-end membership store under Walmart, Sam's quality control issues are raising concerns among more and more consumers.

Recently, a consumer reported that in a case of "Blood Orange Chia Juice Tea Beverage" purchased from Sam's Club in Nanjing, upon drinking the third bottle, they discovered two floating foreign objects, one large and one small, in the unopened bottle. Even more shockingly, the smaller object appeared to be black mold.

"It's absolutely disgusting! Luckily, I took a closer look before drinking," consumer Ms. Kong, a resident of Zhenjiang, told the interviewing reporter. The reporter also saw the juice tea beverage containing foreign objects on site; the larger piece looked like fruit peel, while the smaller piece could not be identified through the bottle for the time being. The production date printed on the cap of this blood orange beverage is "20240501," with a shelf life of 180 days.

Ms. Kong stated that this bottle of juice tea beverage was purchased on September 1 with her family at the Sam's Club store in Yuhuatai, Nanjing. After discovering the two foreign objects in the beverage, she and her family called the store service number printed on the shopping receipt: 025-84××6316, but were never able to reach the store. Helpless, they had to call the Sam's Club national customer service hotline: 4006336868.

It was not until noon on the 3rd that customer service personnel from the Nanjing Sam's Club finally contacted Ms. Kong. After confirming the relevant details in detail and through negotiation, the other party proposed only providing "equivalent-value coupons" as compensation.

Foreign objects found in juice tea drinks at Sam's Club, frequent food safety incidents attract attention

This is not the first time Sam's Club has been exposed for food safety issues. Previously, a consumer in Shenzhen claimed that after purchasing a box of German-imported whole milk from the Qianhai Sam's Club store and opening it at home, they not only found traces of water damage on the milk packaging box, but even more shockingly, many black insect eggs were attached to the surface of the milk cartons. Subsequently, the topic "Black insect eggs attached to outside of Sam's boxed milk" trended on Weibo. The Sam's store involved finally stated that it would immediately remove the relevant batch of products from shelves, conduct a comprehensive self-inspection, and properly handle the matter.

Coincidentally, according to a September 5 report by Shenzhen Business Daily, a consumer in Changzhou, Jiangsu, posted a video online claiming to have found a tooth in a fresh meat mooncake purchased from Sam's Club.

According to the video, a woman wrapped a tooth-like object in a tissue and stated that she and her family discovered this item while eating fresh meat mooncakes bought from Sam's Club. Additionally, the video uploader added in the comments, "Sam's Club has not handled this matter." Only in response to subsequent media reports did the Changzhou Sam's Club store state that management was already handling it.

On social platforms, posts from netizens complaining about problems with Sam's food can be seen everywhere. Sam's Club has frequently been mired in food safety issues recently and has trended on social media several times as a result. A search on the Black Cat Complaint platform shows that since September, Sam's Club supermarket has received 70 complaints, many concerning food safety. Consumers have raised their own food safety concerns regarding various products such as durian mille-feuille, wild mushrooms, and sushi platters. So far, Sam's Club supermarket has encountered over 6,000 complaints in total, with more than 5,000 of them having been addressed, resulting in a complaint resolution rate of approximately 84%.

According to the official website of Sam's Club, it is a high-end membership store under Walmart, a Fortune 500 company, with over 5 million paid members and an average annual spending per member as high as 13,000 yuan. As of August 31, 2024, Sam's Club has opened 49 stores nationwide, located in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Dalian, Hangzhou, and other places.
