The Structure of Drip Bag Coffee | Can a Yirgacheffe drip coffee bag only be brewed once? How many steps are there for brewing drip bag coffee correctly?

As a daily beverage, coffee has become deeply integrated into many people's lives. At the same time, for many, coffee is no longer just about caffeine supplementation—the delightful flavors of different origins are also why people love coffee. Different origins offer different flavors: the citrus and floral notes of Yirgacheffe, the floral tea character of Panama Geisha, the citrus and dark cocoa of washed Colombia, and the herbal spice of Mandheling coffee.

With the spread of coffee culture, coffee has become increasingly commonplace in daily life. However, there are many times when we can't make it to a café to enjoy a good cup of coffee, so Front Street Coffee also highly recommends brewing pour-over coffee at home and enjoying the fun of brewing. But today, besides pour-over coffee, we're introducing a more convenient and quicker method—drip bag coffee.

What is drip bag coffee?

The drip bag coffee we commonly buy is a coffee packet shaped like a filter bag. Take the Front Street Coffee drip bags sold by Front Street as an example: coffee beans are ground and sealed into a specialized filter bag, which is then sealed shut. The name "drip bag coffee" comes from the two support legs that prop open when the filter bag is unfolded, resembling two ears hanging on a coffee cup.

The key feature of drip bag coffee is that it's quicker and more convenient compared to pour-over coffee. Making pour-over coffee requires equipment including a gooseneck kettle, thermometer, dripper, filter paper, and grinder, whereas drip bag coffee is already ground so no grinder is needed. The filter bag design also eliminates the need for a dripper and filter paper, because the unique filter bag already serves both functions.

Because it's more convenient than pour-over coffee and comes in different flavor options, drip bag coffee is often used for business trips and travel. So how should drip bag coffee be brewed?

How to brew drip bag coffee?

Brewing drip bag coffee is very simple—no need to prepare as much as for pour-over coffee. All you need is a pack of drip bag coffee, hot water, and a cup.

First, tear open the outer packaging of the drip bag and take out the coffee filter packet inside.

Then, tear along the indicated line on the coffee filter packet and prop open the drip bag. Next, hang the two "ears" of the drip bag on the rim of your cup or carafe.

Each Front Street Coffee drip bag contains 10 grams of coffee, with a recommended brewing ratio of 1:15. First, pour a small amount of hot water in the first pour to ensure all coffee grounds are saturated, and let it bloom for 10 to 20 seconds. For the second pour, add water until nearly full and let the coffee liquid drop. Finally, add one more pour of water until full—three pours in total. Wait for the remaining coffee to filter through and it's ready to enjoy.

How many times can you brew a drip bag?

Front Street Coffee considers drip bag coffee to be a simplified version of pour-over coffee. Like pour-over coffee, a drip bag can only be brewed once, and the ratio must be controlled—if the ratio is too high (too much water added), the coffee will taste weak. Why? Because the extractable substances in coffee beans account for only about 30% of their weight, so adding more water won't make the coffee taste better.

Also pay attention to the ratio. Like pour-over coffee, the recommended ratio is between 1:14 and 1:18. For drip bag coffee, the ratio corresponds to one bloom pour plus two full pours—three pours in total. Another method is to find a cup with a capacity of 200 milliliters and fill it to 80% full.

How should you choose the flavor of drip bag coffee?

As specialty coffee continues to mature, we have many different options when buying drip bags. So with such a dazzling array of products and unfamiliar origins and variety descriptions, how do you pick the one that suits you best? Next, Front Street will teach you how to quickly identify them.

For those who enjoy floral and fruity-acidic coffee, Front Street would first recommend drip bag coffee made from beans from African countries like Ethiopia and Kenya, because they typically present pleasant, bright fruit acidity and elegant floral notes at light-to-medium roast levels. Take Ethiopian coffee for example—Front Street's favorite is the Front Street washed Gotiti from the classic Yirgacheffe region. The brewed black coffee is not only fresh and natural but also carries a slight caramel note and a green tea finish, with particularly distinct layers.

For customers who prefer a rich, full-bodied coffee, Front Street will immediately recommend specialty coffees from two origins: one is the Front Street Brazil Queen's Estate Yellow Bourbon, and the other is the Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling from Sumatra, Indonesia. After dark roasting, both display moderate bitterness and intense caramelized aromas, exuding chocolate, roasted nut, and cocoa notes on the palate, leaving you feeling especially refreshed after drinking.

Take Colombia's Front Street Rose Valley, which uses a medium roast. The brewed drip bag coffee not only carries a full peach aroma but also develops more pronounced fruit acidity as the temperature drops, drinking like a glass of fruit wine brewed with strawberries.
