Why is Catimor often sold as Typica in Yunnan coffee?
Many Yunnan beans labeled Typica are actually Catimor, and both belong to Arabica even though they differ in flavor, disease resistance and yield. Yunnan is China's core coffee-producing region, accounting for over 95% of national output, and Catimor lines such as 7963 and P4 are the main variety grown in areas including Lincang, Baoshan and Simao.
Typica was Yunnan's oldest coffee variety, but its poor disease resistance led farmers to replace it with higher-yielding, more resistant types after Nestlé entered the region. Beans labeled only Yunnan small-bean coffee without a stated arabica variety are most likely Catimor, so variety detail on the label matters when judging flavor.
Yunnan is China's core coffee-producing region, accounting for over 95% of the national output, but many Yunnan beans labeled "Typica" on the market are actually Catimor. Although Catimor and Typica both belong to Arabica, they differ enormously in flavor, disease resistance, and yield. This article examines the variety truth of Yunnan small-bean coffee from the perspectives of variety origin, cultivation history, and flavor performance, helping enthusiasts recognize the difference between Catimor and Typica and avoid being misled by labels. It also introduces the roasting and online store information of Guangzhou Front Street Coffee.

Previously, some readers reported that on an e-commerce platform, many merchants were labeling Catimor produced in Baoshan as Typica for sale. Catimor includes multiple lines such as 7963 and P4, and is the main variety of Yunnan coffee. If a bag of beans is only vaguely labeled "Yunnan small-bean coffee" without specifying the variety, it is most likely Catimor.
Are both Typica and Catimor considered Yunnan small-bean coffee? What is the difference between them? Let's analyze them one by one below.
Yunnan Small-Bean Coffee
Yunnan is the province with the largest coffee planting scale in China. Although its output is not as high as that of some neighboring countries, its quality is by no means inferior. Yunnan coffee accounts for 95% of China's total output and is the main source of domestic coffee.
The so-called Yunnan small-bean coffee refers to Arabica beans cultivated within Yunnan, with production areas concentrated in Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Dehong, and other places.
Varieties of Yunnan Small-Bean Coffee
The name Yunnan small-bean coffee originally came from Typica, because Typica itself belongs to the Arabica small-bean species. Yunnan's oldest coffee variety is precisely Typica. Later, when Nestlé entered Yunnan, because Typica had poor disease resistance, coffee farmers were required to cut down the excellent-flavor Typica and switch to varieties with ordinary flavor but strong disease resistance and high yield in order to increase production. The first introduced was S288, which was resistant to leaf rust, and later Catimor, which had even higher yield, was introduced. In other words, the coffee trees currently planted in Yunnan are mainly Catimor, and what is called Yunnan small-bean coffee on the market is basically Catimor.
"Small-bean" refers to the smaller-beaned varieties within Arabica, used to distinguish them from the medium-beaned Robusta grown in Hainan. The earliest coffee trees introduced to Yunnan were Typica and Bourbon, two pure Arabica varieties, among which old Typica is recognized as a high-quality variety. Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee belongs to Typica, with a rich aroma and a delicate, complex flavor, but its yield is very low, it is susceptible to rust disease, and it requires more manual management. After all, coffee is a livelihood crop for Yunnan farmers, and if the yield is too low it is difficult to maintain returns, so most local farmers have switched to the higher-yielding Catimor.
Typica
The most classic high-quality Arabica variety, from which many commercial improved varieties are derived. It performs excellently in flavor and is recognized as a specialty coffee variety, but it has low yield and is susceptible to rust disease, with high management costs. Typica originated in Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan and is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in the Western Hemisphere. The plant is relatively robust, but it is not tolerant of strong light, and it yields relatively high in Hawaii. The top leaves of Typica are copper-red, so it is also called red-top coffee.
Catimor
Most of the coffee varieties currently planted in Yunnan are Catimor. Typica is susceptible to coffee leaf rust and also has low yield, so local coffee farmers can only reluctantly cut down the elegant-flavored Typica and switch to planting Catimor, which has higher yield and resistance to leaf rust.
When introducing China's coffee-producing regions in "Specialty Coffee Studies," Han Huaizong mentioned that in 1998, more than 90% of Yunnan's coffee varieties were Catimor.
Catimor is a variety bred in 1959 by the Portuguese Coffee Leaf Rust Research Center CIFC, developed by crossing Timor and Caturra. Its characteristics are high yield, short plants suitable for dense planting, and good disease resistance. However, Catimor carries Robusta genes, so its bitterness and grassy notes are more obvious than those of pure Arabica, and its cleanliness, fruity notes, and richness are also somewhat inferior. Robusta has strong resistance to leaf rust, rich oils, high yield, and is easy to cultivate. After crossing with Arabica's Typica, Catimor obtained 25% Robusta genes, which not only improved its resistance to leaf rust and retained rich oils, but also inherited part of Typica's rich taste. Therefore, most estates in Yunnan currently plant Catimor on a large scale, while the planting range of Typica continues to shrink.
