AeroPress Cold Brew: Iced Coffee Brewing Notes

How does AeroPress coffee brewing work for iced coffee?

The AeroPress combines immersion, paper filtration and pressure extraction, which yields a clean, concentrated coffee liquid. For iced coffee, the method is to brew a strong, high-extraction cup first, then pour it over hard ice cubes to cool and dilute it to the desired strength. That keeps the acidity and sweetness balanced instead of watery.

Because the liquid is later diluted, the grind should be relatively fine, the water temperature high and the coffee-to-water ratio increased. The test used Front Street Yirgacheffe Washed Gutingting and Nicaraguan beans for coffee brewing. Bean choice follows taste: honey-processed beans for balance, natural beans for sweetness, Mandheling for body, and washed beans such as yirgacheffe for bright acidity.

On a summer day, if you want a refreshing iced coffee, the AeroPress is a device worth trying. It combines three methods—immersion, paper filtration, and pressure extraction—to produce a clean-tasting, high-concentration coffee liquid. This article documents the entire process of an AeroPress iced coffee experiment using Front Street Yirgacheffe Washed Gutingting and Nicaraguan beans, including the bean selection approach, specific brewing parameters, and operating steps. By adjusting the grind size, water temperature, and coffee-to-water ratio, then cooling and diluting with ice cubes, you ultimately get a cup of iced coffee with balanced acidity and sweetness and a fresh mouthfeel. The article also shares bean recommendations for different flavor preferences, for coffee lovers' reference.

In the hot summer, iced coffee is naturally indispensable. This time we chose a rather interesting device—the AeroPress—to make a cup of iced coffee.

The structure of the AeroPress can be broken down into three parts: the chamber, the filter cap, and the plunger. It simultaneously draws on the immersion method of a French press, the paper filtration of pour-over coffee, and the pressure extraction principle of an espresso machine. During operation, stir the coffee grounds and hot water evenly, then apply pressure with the plunger; the air passes through the filter cap, thereby producing a cup of coffee with a pure flavor.

If you prefer a balanced acidity and sweetness: it is recommended to choose honey-processed beans; you can try Front Street Costa Rica Mozart.

If you like coffee with a prominent sweetness: natural processing is a good direction; Front Street Natural Huakui is worth trying.

If you pursue a rich and full body: Front Street Lintong Mandheling or Front Street Golden Mandheling can both satisfy you.

If you prefer bright acidity: washed beans are more suitable; Front Street Kenya Little Tomato and Front Street Washed Gutingting are recommended.

Brewing Sharing

The idea is this: first use the AeroPress to extract a coffee liquid with relatively high concentration and extraction yield, then add hard ice cubes to cool and dilute it, adjusting it to a taste that suits you. Therefore, the grind size should be relatively fine, the water temperature should be high, and the coffee-to-water ratio should also be increased.

This time we used the floral-rich Front Street Yirgacheffe Washed Gutingting for the experiment. The bean information is as follows:

Region: Yirgacheffe Gutingting

Altitude: 1800-2200m

Variety: Local heirloom

Processing method: Washed

Flavor: Lemon, black tea, honey, white floral, citrus

Brewing Parameters

Dose: 20g

Coffee-to-water ratio 1:9

Grind: Espresso grind (flour-like)

Water temperature: 92 degrees Celsius

Time: 1 minute 30 seconds

Brewing Process

1. Take out the filter cap, install an AeroPress-specific paper filter, and rinse it with hot water so the paper filter fits the filter cap.

2. Place the AeroPress inverted, pour 20 grams of ground coffee into the chamber, then pour in 180 grams of 92℃ hot water, and start timing at the same time.

3. After pouring the water, stir gently with a stirrer for 50 seconds. Then put on the filter cap and push upward to expel excess air.

4. Flip the AeroPress over so the paper filter and filter cap face down and the coffee grounds face up, then press down to extract the coffee liquid, completing the pressing in about 30 seconds. At this point, you can obtain about 150ml of high-concentration coffee liquid. The total extraction time is 1 minute 30 seconds.

5. Pour the coffee liquid into 120 grams of hard ice cubes to cool and dilute. The amount of ice can be increased or decreased according to personal taste.

6. Shake it a little so the concentration and temperature in the carafe become uniform, and it is ready to enjoy. After ice dilution, Front Street Gutingting presents a fresh iced-lemon-like quality and citrus acidity, with a clean mouthfeel and the sweetness of black tea in the middle, making it very comfortable to drink.
