What Makes Panama Morgan Estate Geisha Coffee Distinct?

Morgan Estate sits on the southwestern slope of Volcán Barú in Panama at 1,700 to 1,780 meters, where Atlantic and Pacific monsoons meet. The five-hectare farm, owned by writer Juan David Morgan, produces Green Label geisha coffee in washed and natural lots, with a cup profile of roses, grapes, lychees, and dark berries.

Roughly two thousand trees are planted per hectare on steep slopes, and only part of them fruit each season. Cherries are hand-selected in multiple rounds, so very little green bean reaches the market. That scarcity, plus tree removal when pests appear, keeps geisha coffee prices high and draws competition baristas as buyers.

Morgan Estate is located on the southwestern slope of Volcán Barú in Panama, at an altitude of 1,700 to 1,780 meters, nourished by a microclimate where the Atlantic and Pacific monsoons converge. Although the estate covers only five hectares, its steep terrain and rigorous management mean that only a small amount of coffee beans reaches the market each season. The Morgan family farm is owned by writer Juan David Morgan and primarily produces Green Label Geisha, with both washed and natural processing, known for flavors of roses, grapes, lychees, and dark berries. Front Street Coffee recommends paying attention to its unique flavor expression and meticulous harvesting and processing methods.

About Morgan Estate

Morgan Estate is located on the southwestern side of Volcán Barú, the highest peak in Panama, covering about five hectares, with approximately two thousand coffee trees densely planted per hectare. Due to varietal characteristics and cultivation philosophy, only some plants bear fruit each season. The cherries undergo multiple rounds of manual selection, and ultimately only a very small amount of green beans enters the market.

The estate is simultaneously influenced by the alternating Atlantic and Pacific monsoon systems. The microclimate within the estate is complex and changeable, with significant temperature differences between day and night. The ripening cycle of coffee cherries is extended, allowing for more complete development and richer sugar accumulation. The high altitude brings predominantly mountainous terrain, and the coffee trees are planted on steep slopes, increasing the difficulty of management and harvesting. In terms of plant care, once a tree is found to be infested by pests, the estate will uproot the entire tree and renew the soil, thereby blocking the spread of disease and protecting surrounding healthy plants.

For this reason, the price of green beans from Morgan Estate has always remained high on the market, and its customers are mostly baristas participating in competitions. These industry professionals believe that whether a cup of coffee can be outstanding is already determined from the green bean, or even the seed, stage. Taking Morgan Estate's Geisha as an example, its green bean state already foreshadows its extraordinary performance in the cup.

Morgan Family Farm is an award-winning high-altitude Geisha producer located in a deep valley of the Panamanian highlands. The farm owner, Juan David Morgan, is also a writer.

Morgan Estate is located at an altitude of 1,700 to 1,780 meters, hidden in an isolated, densely vegetated valley. A river runs through the valley, and waterfalls cascade down steep rock walls. Rainbows often appear where sunlight meets mist. Geisha trees are planted under the shade shrouded in mist, right beside one side of the valley.

Similar to Deborah Estate, Morgan Estate strictly selects fully ripe cherries during harvesting, keeping only intact picked cherries, and harvesting only at noon to ensure entry into the processing flow at the most suitable time. Each bag of cherries is packed separately in clean bags. The estate mainly produces Green Label Geisha, with a small amount of other varieties planted together with Red Label Geisha, but all are marked on the trees and kept under strict lot management.

The coffee trees receive meticulous care and pruning throughout, with minimal fertilizer application and almost no reliance on chemical fertilizers.

Morgan Estate produces washed and natural Geisha. The estate has built greenhouses and drying sheds so that temperature and humidity can be strictly monitored and controlled within ideal ranges during natural processing.

The estate sets timers and manually turns the coffee every 30 minutes. Around the greenhouse is a nursery cultivating 100 Geisha seedlings. Each tree seed is first selected from pre-selected grade washed beans, germinated in sterile sand, and then transplanted into ceramic pots slightly larger than standard size.
