Drip bag coffee, like pour-over coffee, is a drip-filter coffee, but it requires no complicated timed brewing steps, nor expensive coffee machines or grinding equipment—you can enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee in just a few minutes. Convenience is the biggest advantage of drip bag coffee. Below, Front Street summarizes a few details to make drip bag coffee taste even better.

Characteristics of Drip Bag Coffee

Drip bag coffee refers to pre-ground roasted coffee beans sealed in a filter bag with two "ears" that hang securely on the cup. All you need is hot water and a container, and you can brew it anywhere, anytime.

Opening the outer packaging, you'll find a filter bag made of biodegradable non-woven fabric wrapping the coffee grounds. Since coffee extraction leaves undissolved substances—coffee grounds—the filter bag catches them and keeps them out of your cup while hot water passes through the coffee to extract its flavor compounds.

The coffee powder used in drip bags is usually ground from freshly roasted coffee beans to preserve the original flavor as much as possible. After roasting, coffee beans need 4–7 days of degassing and resting before entering their peak flavor period. For example, the coffee beans shipped by Front Street are freshly roasted within 5 days. If made into drip bag coffee, by the time we receive it, it's usually 4–5 days after roasting—just the right time to start brewing and tasting.

Since drip bag coffee and pour-over coffee share the same extraction nature, the grind size matches that of pour-over. To facilitate extraction, drip bags typically use a small dose in individual packaging. Front Street's drip bag coffee contains 10 grams per pack.

How to Brew Drip Bag Coffee

Brewing a drip bag is indeed simple and convenient—just pour a certain amount of hot water over the coffee grounds and wait for the coffee to drip through, and the entire extraction process is complete. Since coffee flavor is influenced by many factors—such as coffee-to-water ratio, water temperature, pouring method, and more—if you want to brew a cup of drip bag coffee with good flavor and mouthfeel, Front Street suggests paying attention to the following details to make your cup taste better.

First, we need to prepare sufficiently hot water, because only when the water temperature is high enough can more aromatic substances be released from the coffee grounds. For pour-over coffee, Front Street recommends brewing at 86–93°C. If the temperature is only around 80°C, the coffee tends to be bland and tasteless, while boiling water easily extracts burnt, bitter flavors. Therefore, Front Street lets boiled water sit uncovered at room temperature for 1–2 minutes to bring the temperature down to around 90°C.

In pour-over coffee, the coffee-to-water ratio is very important. If you use a 1:12 ratio, the coffee tends to be too strong with only bitterness; at 1:18, there's too much water, making the coffee flat with insufficient aroma. Front Street recommends starting with 1:15—10 grams of coffee grounds to 150 grams of hot water—which gives a more balanced extraction and a steadier brew. If you don't have a scale, you can also find a cup with measurement markings.

Before brewing, boil the water first. Tear open the sealed package, take out the drip bag, and tear along the dotted line on the non-woven pouch. Then pull apart the two "ears," open up the entire drip bag, and hang them on the edge of your cup or sharing pitcher.

First, pour a small amount of hot water in the first stage to wet all the coffee grounds, and let it bloom for about 10–20 seconds to help release gases from the coffee grounds, making the later extraction more stable. In the second stage, pour steadily with a gentle stream until the liquid level is nearly full, then wait for the coffee to drip down until it finishes flowing. Pour the final stage of water to full, and when all the coffee has finished dripping through, the extraction is complete.

Before drinking, Front Street gently swirls the coffee to even it out, then drinks it directly to enjoy the pure flavor of black coffee. You can also add an appropriate amount of sugar or milk according to your personal preference.

Front Street's bean list features over fifty single-origin coffee beans from different regions, including the classic Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Gute Gute Cooperative coffee beans, Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans, Costa Rica Mozart coffee beans, and more—all of which can be made into drip bag coffee. Since drip bag coffee requires pre-grinding, the coffee grounds have more contact area with air than whole beans, so aroma is lost more easily. Front Street recommends drinking it as soon as possible after receiving it; otherwise, prolonged storage can cause the coffee's aroma to fade. If you want to taste coffee with the fullest flavor, Front Street recommends buying whole beans and grinding fresh for each brew—the flavor layers are even better.

Drip Bag Coffee Recommendations

1. Front Street Coffee Washed Yirgacheffe Gute Gute Cooperative Drip Bag Coffee

This Gute Gute Cooperative coffee bean from Front Street comes from Ethiopia's famous Yirgacheffe region, and the harvested beans undergo washed processing. Traditionally, Yirgacheffe coffee used the oldest natural (sun-dried) processing method, but because early sun-dried beans were mostly spread flat on the ground to dry, they inevitably picked up earthy and dusty off-flavors. Combined with a lack of proper sorting, the quality of sun-dried beans was generally mediocre. In 1972, Ethiopia introduced washed processing technology from Central and South America to improve coffee quality, making Yirgacheffe's jasmine floral notes and bright citrus-lemon acidity clearer and more transparent—catapulting it to become one of the world's representative specialty coffees.

Front Street's Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 green coffee beans come with a Clifton Estate certificate of origin and the wooden barrel used for transporting Blue Mountain coffee. Unlike other countries, Blue Mountain is the only coffee-producing region that uses wooden barrels to pack green beans; all other regions use burlap sacks. The Rainforest Water Frog logo indicates that Clifton Estate meets the "Sustainable Agriculture Standard" and is certified by the Rainforest Alliance. The Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 on Front Street's bean shelf is the highest grade of Blue Mountain coffee, namely NO.1. The green beans must be 17–18 screen size, with a defect rate below 3%, uniform particles, and plump beans. The medium-dark roasted Blue Mountain No. 1 presents the classic Blue Mountain flavor with chocolate and nutty notes.

3. Front Street Coffee Costa Rica Mozart Coffee

This Costa Rica Mozart coffee from Front Street belongs to the Musician Series and uses raisin honey processing. Raisin honey processing is a type of double-fermentation honey process: on the day of harvest, the picked coffee cherries are poured into a large water tank—ripe, plump cherries sink to the bottom, while underdeveloped or overripe cherries float to the surface and must be removed. The sorted coffee cherries are then laid on raised beds to dry until they reach a raisin-like state, after which the pulp and skin are removed, and the mucilage is retained before further drying. Front Street believes that raisin honey processed coffee beans have a more intense fermented character in flavor, with richer and fuller flavor layers.
