Yirgacheffe, as one of Ethiopia's most representative specialty coffee regions, has won the favor of coffee lovers worldwide with its unique flavor profile, its fame even surpassing that of the Sidamo Province where it is located. Among the many washing stations in Yirgacheffe, the naturally processed beans from the Kebel Aricha processing station stand out in particular, having been graded G1—the highest level—by the ECX, and are known as the "King of Fruits." Today, Front Street Coffee will discuss in detail this Aricha natural coffee bean's origin background, green bean appearance characteristics, and cupping flavor performance, giving you a comprehensive understanding of why it is so highly regarded in the pour-over field.
Yirgacheffe is located within Sidamo Province, Ethiopia. The coffee produced here is widely known for its distinctive flavor profile, so much so that the fame of the Yirgacheffe region has far surpassed that of the Sidamo Province to which it belongs. In recent years, Yirgacheffe has become ubiquitous in the domestic market, and more and more coffee lovers are no longer unfamiliar with the various versions of Yirgacheffe.
In the Yirgacheffe region, there are many high-caliber coffee processing stations, and many coffee beans have risen in value precisely because they come from these stations. The natural beans produced by the Kebel Aricha Mill are a typical example, commonly known as ARICHA coffee beans. After being processed by the Kebel Aricha processing station using meticulous natural methods, these beans are recognized by the ECX as Gr.1 or G1 grade—the highest level for Ethiopian coffee—and have therefore earned the title of "King of Fruits."
The green beans of Yirgacheffe Aricha Grade 1 have a yellow-green hue, which is the classic color of natural coffee beans. The beans are uniform in size and plump, with a very low proportion of defective beans. They are packaged in ordinary jute bags for export, with the bags printed with basic coffee information including the processing station, exporter, ICO code, processing method, and region. Inside the jute bags, there is also a plastic bag specifically for agricultural products. This coffee is best suited to a light, slow roasting approach in order to fully bring out its flavor characteristics.
