Honestly, among all the coffee gear out there, what Front Street loves most is the French press. Why? Because it's super simple to use—no need for any rigorous pouring technique or complex variable control to easily brew a delicious cup of coffee. It couldn't be more relaxing.(The key is it's also very cheap图片).

But then again, Front Street has noticed that most French press coffee tutorials are about making hot coffee, with very few tutorials on making iced coffee. In this hot weather, compared to rich and tasty hot coffee, Front Street believes everyone would rather have a refreshing, ice-cold coffee to cool off. So! Today Front Street is going to share how to use a French press to make a rich and delicious iced coffee!

The French press uses immersion extraction! Immersion extraction has two advantages. The first is its high fault tolerance. During the immersion process, when the concentration of the coffee and the liquid tends to equalize, the rate at which substances escape from the coffee grounds slows down, so even if we use extreme parameters, there's no need to worry too much about over-extraction.

The second is that it doesn't require any rigorous pouring method—brewing a good cup of coffee is as simple as brewing a cup of tea. We just need to set the parameters, then pour the water and coffee grounds into the press to steep, and when the time is up, we can filter out a delicious cup of coffee.

If we want to make a rich iced coffee with a French press, we first need to use it to brew a pot of high-concentration hot coffee! Because making iced coffee with a French press, just like with pour-over, requires rapid cooling with ice cubes.
And the ice cubes will continuously melt while cooling the coffee, which will dilute the coffee's concentration. If the coffee we brew and filter isn't concentrated enough, then after being diluted by the melted ice water, the coffee will become bland and thin, tasting like a cup of coffee-flavored water. So we need to brew a pot of high-concentration coffee to offset the diluting effect of the ice cubes.

Just like with pour-over coffee, if we want to brew a high-concentration coffee, what we need to do is adjust the parameters. And the coffee-to-water ratio is our main target for adjustment.
By using less water for extraction, we can increase the coffee's concentration. But to prevent under-extraction, we also need to raise the water temperature, grind finer, or extend the extraction time, add stirring, and other methods to improve extraction efficiency.

Next, Front Street will share through actual practice how to use a French press to make a rich and delicious iced coffee!

Brewing Guide
If you want to enjoy a sweet and tangy iced coffee in the hot summer, Front Street suggests using coffee beans with a medium-light roast and a deeper degree of fermentation processing. For example, natural, honey, or anaerobic processing. For this分享, Front Street is using the Front Street Fenceline Estate·Sidra from our bean list. The iced coffee made with it has an explosive fruity flavor—grape, passion fruit, and apricot notes, very prominent! The extraction parameters are as follows:
Coffee dose: 15g(Adjust according to the size of your French press)
Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:10
Grind size: Ek43 setting 9, 85% passing through a #20 sieve, fine granulated sugar texture.
Extraction temperature: 100°C
Steeping time: 9 minutes
Steps are as follows:
①: First, pour all the coffee grounds and the appropriate amount of boiling water into the French press, and stir with any tool, about 10 circles. Then start the timer and wait four minutes.

②: After four minutes, use any tool to press the coffee grounds floating on the surface down into the water, then wait again! This time the wait is five minutes.

③: After five minutes, we can put the lid on the French press and push the filter down to the surface of the coffee.

图片

④: After completing the above steps, we take out a cup filled with ice cubes(Here Front Street uses 120g of ice), then slowly pour the coffee over the ice. The purpose of this is to reduce the amount of fine grounds poured out, so the mouthfeel won't be too rough.

When the coffee is almost all poured, we finally take any tool and stir the coffee, and then we can start enjoying the rich, delicious, refreshing, heat-relieving iced coffee~
