American Coffee Ratio | How much water is needed to make a good cup of American coffee? What is the suitable ratio of espresso, water, and ice for iced American coffee?

Many friends make themselves an Americano when they get up in the morning! This is both because of the "effects" that an Americano brings and because it is very simple to make: you only need to extract a shot of espresso, then add a certain amount of water and stir it evenly, and a cup of Americano that both refreshes you and helps reduce puffiness is ready!

The role of water here is mainly to dilute the concentration of the espresso so that the coffee is easier to drink. But "how much water should be used to make an Americano" has become a problem that troubles many friends. Because most of the time, various bloggers do not share the specific parameters, and more often they only give a range. So many beginners often ask Front Street questions like this: "How much water should actually be used to make the best-tasting Americano?"

How much water should actually be used to make the best-tasting Americano?
In fact, there is no fixed standard for the amount of water in an Americano, because the main effect of the amount of water on the coffee is its concentration. Unlike pour-over coffee, making an Americano is done by pouring water directly into already-extracted espresso to dilute it, so the amount of water does not affect the coffee's extraction yield, only its concentration.
When more water is used, the coffee's concentration is lower, and the taste and flavor become softer; when less water is used, the coffee's concentration is higher, and the taste and flavor become more concentrated and more intense.

So the amount of water in an Americano is influenced by personal taste, and also depends on the coffee beans used. This is because the taste of a cup of Americano mainly comes from the beans used, and the roast level of the beans directly affects the intensity of the flavor(and the processing method too, but its influence is relatively small).
For example, dark-roasted beans mainly feature flavors such as caramel, chocolate, and nuts, and the extracted espresso tastes more bitter and stronger; while light-roasted beans mainly feature floral and fruity notes, and the extracted espresso is not as strong as coffee made from dark-roasted beans, leaning overall toward acidity and a fresher style.

As you can see, the two have completely opposite characteristics. So we cannot apply the ratio that makes one cup of Americano taste good to different coffee beans, otherwise it will easily end up tasting too weak or too strong. So how can we find the amount of water that best suits the current coffee beans for making the best Americano?

图片

Very simple! Drink! As long as we taste Americanos made with different ratios one by one, we can find the parameters that best suit our own taste and the current beans! But there is no need to make the range too wide. Front Street can still give everyone some reference here.

Front Street's daily output uses Front Street Warm Sun Blend, which is a dark-roasted espresso bean. The extraction parameters are usually 20g of grounds to extract 40ml of liquid, with the time between 28 and 35 seconds. After several tests at Front Street, it was finally determined that hot Americano is made using a 1:4.5 ratio, that is,40ml of coffee with 180ml of water added.

The hot Americano made with this ratio can not only fully displayunique flavors such as whisky aroma, vanilla, cream, and butter cookies, while also retaining a certain concentration, making the coffee taste fuller; while the ratio used for making iced Americano is 1:2:4,that is, 40ml of coffee with 80g of ice cubes and 160ml of room-temperature water added. Similarly, the iced Americano made with this ratio fully displays the flavor while not losing concentration, with excellent taste and flavor.
Then everyone can use the above ratio as a reference to narrow the range during testing. For example, if the coffee beans you use are single-origin beans, or relatively light-roasted coffee beans, then when testing hot Americano you can control the ratio within the range of 1:3.5~4.5, while if they are dark-roasted beans, then the ratio can be limited to the range of 4.5~5.5(because the concentration of this ratio at Front Street is a bit high). The same applies to making iced Americano, but it also needs to be determined in combination with the melting speed of the ice cubes.

And if there are not many people during testing, then we can, like a piccolo, reduce the cost of testing by splitting the espresso. For example, divide the extracted espresso evenly into 2~3 portions, then add different ratios of water in turn. In this way, one coffee can be tested multiple times, reducing material costs while also avoiding waste~
