Coffee Development News: Sanhe Shop Sign Color Rules Draw Backlash

What does the Sanhe shop sign rule mean for coffee development?

Sanhe City in Hebei province drew widespread attention in April when urban management officers verbally told merchants in Yanjiao that red, blue, and black storefront signs had to be repainted, with owners covering the cost. Mixue Bingcheng outlets were repainted green or gray-black. The Sanhe Urban Management Bureau said the move followed urban planning, though no supporting document had been issued.

The episode matters to coffee development in China because shop signage is how chains keep brand recognition, and repainting a well-known storefront weakens that identity. Similar unified sign campaigns have appeared elsewhere. Since the notice was verbal, merchants had no written basis to appeal, and only stores near major intersections were reportedly affected.

Recently, a notice in Yanjiao, Sanhe, Hebei regarding the color rectification of shop signs has attracted attention. The local urban management department verbally notified merchants that red, blue, and black storefront signs must be changed to other colors, and the removal and replacement costs must be borne by the merchants themselves. Signboards of brand stores such as Mixue Bingcheng were forced to change to green or gray-black, and the incident quickly trended on Weibo. The Sanhe Urban Management Bureau responded that this move was one step ahead in accordance with urban planning, but the relevant documents had not yet been issued. Similar "unified shop signs" phenomena are not isolated cases, and this time the practice targets only common basic commercial colors, which lacks sufficient justification and weakens brand recognition, sparking widespread controversy.

At noon today, the topic #Langfang Mixue Bingcheng sign turns green# surged onto Weibo's trending list, sparking heated discussion.

Recently, a netizen posted a video exposing that in the Yanjiao area of Sanhe City, Hebei Province, merchants received door-to-door notices from urban management, requiring red, blue, and black shop signs to be changed to other colors. Moreover, merchants had to remove them themselves, with no compensation for replacement, leaving the reason a mystery for a time.

On April 6, a netizen posted a picture showing that a Mixue Bingcheng sign in Sanhe City had been changed to gray-black. On the 7th, a staff member of that store told the media that urban management personnel had previously come to notify them that red storefronts were no longer allowed. The staff member also said that the other party only communicated verbally.

On the morning of April 8, a staff member of a Mixue Bingcheng in the Yanjiao Development Zone of Sanhe, Hebei, said that their store's sign had now been changed to green, "Urban management said that all storefronts near major intersections are not allowed to use red." The clerk also mentioned that the (storefront sign colors) near major intersections had all been changed, while those not near major roads had not been changed.

In addition to Mixue Bingcheng, a staff member of a chain eyewear brand store with a red storefront in Yanjiao confirmed to reporters on the afternoon of the 7th that they had also received a door-to-door verbal notice from urban management that red signs must be changed to other colors.

In addition, reporters noted that a shop owner who had been required to change a red sign to a blue-green sign had already posted a video as early as March 20 reminding customers: "The sign color has been changed, customers please don't go to the wrong place."

According to media reports, staff from the relevant department of the Sanhe Urban Management Bureau explained that, according to the municipal government's urban planning requirements, apart from red, blue, black, and the background color of storefront plaques, all other colors may be used. "Relevant departments will issue documents, and they will be pushed on the official account at that time." The staff member said, "Yes, the documents are not out yet; we are just one step ahead in changing this in accordance with urban planning."

When will the relevant requirements and measures be implemented? In this regard, a reporter contacted a staff member of the Sanhe Municipal Government Office, who responded, "We don't know about this (situation) either."

In fact, similar "unified shop signs" phenomena like that in Sanhe City are not isolated cases. On social platforms, netizens in many places have posted similar situations, where the signs of settled merchants must be changed to a consistent style from font to background, from color to size, so that the entire street looks uniform. It is understood that when urban management departments require merchants to change signs, there are usually specific considerations, mostly to enhance the city's overall image and achieve a unified and orderly commercial appearance.

But this sign adjustment in Sanhe City not only failed to provide sufficient and legitimate reasons, but also singled out colors for rectification, targeting red, blue, and black, which are very common and basic commercial colors. Moreover, after the change, the recognizability of brand identities is instantly weakened, and the removal and replacement costs must be borne by the merchants themselves, so it is obviously difficult to win public support.
