What Happened at the Outdoor Coffee Festival Events?
A strong cold front pushed south across China and disrupted two outdoor coffee festivals held the same weekend, one in Nanning, Guangxi and one in Ningbo, Zhejiang. Sudden gales uprooted tents and overturned stall shelves and storage boxes, causing heavy losses to vendors. No casualties were reported.
A gale warning had been issued in advance, but organizers did not adjust the schedules or take effective emergency measures, which drew widespread criticism online, according to the article. The events had drawn crowds of residents taking photos before the weather turned. The disruption highlights how exposed open-air coffee gatherings are to fast-moving weather.
Recently, a strong cold front swept across China from north to south, hitting North China first before the gale continued southward, dispelling the earlier muggy heat in South China. On this cool weekend, Nanning in Guangxi and Ningbo in Zhejiang each hosted outdoor coffee festival events, drawing many residents to visit and take photos. However, the weather did not cooperate: both events were hit by sudden violent gales, with tents uprooted and stall facilities overturned, causing heavy losses. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The meteorological observatory had issued a gale warning in advance, but the organizers did not adjust the event arrangements or take effective emergency measures, prompting widespread questions from netizens. This article will review what happened at these two outdoor coffee festivals and discuss issues related to safety management for outdoor events.

Recently, a relatively strong cold front moved south, and North China experienced rare sustained gales. Cities such as Beijing were battered so badly that it felt like a typhoon had passed through. But the gale did not stop there; it continued all the way south to South China, sweeping away the earlier muggy heat.
So, on this cool and pleasant weekend, Nanning in Guangxi held a coffee festival at an outdoor plaza, attracting local residents to come and enjoy themselves. Many young people held photogenic drinks they had just bought and took photos with friends, making the event scene very lively.
However, yesterday afternoon, dark clouds pressed in and daylight vanished in an instant. Sudden gusts of fierce wind unceremoniously invaded the venue and threw the scene into chaos. According to videos and images circulating online, the wind made promotional posters around the plaza flap loudly, some stall signs and decorations hanging from tent tops were blown away, and packed cups left on tables would be swept off by the wind in an unguarded moment.
Most unexpectedly, a row of stalls next to the road at the event could not withstand the sudden extreme gale. Tents were “uprooted” one after another, and shelves, storage boxes, and other items inside the stalls were overturned on the ground, leaving the scene in complete disarray and a miserable sight.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, Ningbo in Zhejiang was also hosting a sizable coffee festival. At the crowded event site, strong gales overturned several tents, and some vendors reported that their stall signs and menus disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Fortunately, according to people who were present at both events, although this freak wind left the coffee festival sites in a mess, the tents that collapsed crookedly did not injure passing visitors or vendors. Still, some stalls were left unrecognizable after the fierce wind and heavy rain, and vendors who could no longer continue operating could only clean up the chaotic site, haul away machinery and equipment, and silently calculate the severe losses brought by the sudden wind and rain.
In response, local netizens said that yesterday the meteorological observatories in both Nanning and Ningbo had issued weather warnings before the gale arrived, reminding residents to take precautions and avoid going out unless necessary, and that large events held in open outdoor venues should also be suspended when the weather suddenly changes.

However, the organizers neither changed the event time based on actual conditions nor insisted on holding it as scheduled while having targeted emergency plans, such as securing tents with sandbags and ropes before the gale passed through. They said bluntly, “The organizers are not ok at all. In this kind of windy weather, the meteorological observatory has already issued a gale warning, yet the organizers still did not reschedule the event,” “Do the organizers not check the weather forecast? They did not provide everyone with a safe environment to drink coffee!” and “This is a bit dangerous.”
In the view of many netizens, this windy day was unusual. Since the meteorological department had already issued warnings in advance, for safety reasons, both the venue operator and the event planner should have called off the outdoor event. Even if it was to continue, it should have been moved indoors to a safer environment, rather than putting participating vendors and visiting tourists in danger.
