What Does the Starbucks Restructuring Mean for Coffee Culture?

Starbucks announced a corporate restructuring and layoffs in January, with details expected in March. CEO Brian Niccol said the changes aim to simplify management and speed up decisions, and store baristas will not be affected. Separately, China Chairman Belinda Wong is retiring and lead independent director Mellody Hobson will not seek re-election.

The company employs about 361,000 people worldwide; roughly 16,000 work in corporate roles and the rest are store baristas, per its latest annual report. Wong led Starbucks China as stores grew from over 400 to more than 7,000. The restructuring and departures come as specialty coffee competition intensifies in key markets.

Starbucks recently announced the launch of a corporate team restructuring and plans to lay off staff, with the specific positions and number of people to be announced in March. Meanwhile, Starbucks China Chairman Belinda Wong has decided to retire, and Lead Independent Director Mellody Hobson has also announced she will not seek re-election, with two senior executives leaving in quick succession within just a few days. CEO Brian Niccol stated that the adjustment aims to simplify the management structure and improve decision-making efficiency, and will not affect store baristas. During Belinda Wong's tenure leading the China business, stores expanded from more than 400 to over 7,000, making China Starbucks' fastest-growing overseas market.

According to multiple foreign media reports, on the 17th local time, Starbucks announced externally that it would restructure its corporate team, accompanied by layoffs. The company has not yet disclosed the specific categories of positions to be cut or the scale of the workforce reduction, and the related arrangements are expected to be explained publicly in March this year.

On January 17, Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said in a memo to employees that the company needed to streamline its management structure so that every responsibility could be assigned to a clearly designated owner, while also reducing the complexity of corporate operations and breaking down barriers between departments.

In the letter, he analyzed that Starbucks' current scale and organizational form could lead to longer decision-making cycles, with too many people bearing the responsibility of managing small teams, roles that are essentially coordination-oriented. Based on this judgment, the company is preparing to cut some positions.

"Making these decisions is not easy for me, and I know this will bring uncertainty and anxiety to everyone now and in the future," Brian emphasized in the letter, saying he hoped the memo would help employees understand what the company is advancing and planning.

Starbucks' annual report released last year showed that as of September 29, 2024, Starbucks employed about 361,000 people worldwide, the vast majority of whom were store baristas, while the remaining roughly 16,000 were corporate employees, covering non-store positions such as development, roasting, warehousing, and distribution operations.

Regarding this round of layoffs, Brian made it clear that store baristas would not be affected, and the remaining details would be announced before March.

It is worth noting that in addition to confirming the intention to lay off staff, CEO Brian Niccol has also recently announced two important senior leadership changes in succession.

According to a January 16 report by Xiaoshidai, Starbucks China Chairman Belinda Wong has decided to retire from the company on January 24. After that, Liu Wenjuan, who took office last year, will take over and continue to lead Starbucks' operations in the Chinese market.

Belinda Wong

Public information shows that Belinda Wong joined Starbucks in 2000, became president of Starbucks China in 2011, was promoted to CEO of Starbucks China in 2016, and in 2019 also took on the newly created role of chairman of Starbucks China. Starbucks public data shows that before Belinda Wong took over, although Starbucks had entered the Chinese market as early as 1999, it had opened only more than 400 stores over the following decade or so, and at one point even faced the risk of withdrawal.

Under Belinda Wong's leadership, the brand achieved leapfrog development in China, with the number of stores rising from more than 400 in 2011 to more than 7,000 today, covering more than 200 cities, and the number of partners once exceeding 60,000. At the same time, Belinda Wong also promoted the launch of various innovative store formats such as "Reserve," which emphasizes spatial design and the coffee experience. During this period, China also became Starbucks' fastest-growing and largest overseas market globally.

It can be said that Starbucks China could not have achieved what it has today without Belinda Wong's indispensable contribution. As a key figure in opening up the China business, she was praised by Schultz many times, who said, "She may be the most valuable partner in the company."

Just after these changes occurred, on the same day the company's layoff news emerged, former Starbucks board chairman and current Lead Independent Director Mellody Hobson also announced that she would not seek re-election, bringing her 20-year tenure to an end. Starbucks' current CEO Brian Niccol was introduced to join the company by her.

In other words, within just a few days, two senior executives at Starbucks have confirmed their departures.
