How did scattered coffee beans help solve a cafe theft?
Shanghai Jiading police recently cracked a coffee shop equipment theft case. The suspect, taking advantage of the shop's temporary closure, impersonated an employee and carted away a grinder and a water boiler, with the stolen goods valued at over 40,000 yuan. Coffee beans he spilled during the first heist became the key clue.
A grid worker noticed the man visiting a closed shop every few days, each time packing one piece of equipment and leaving quickly, and once spilling beans without cleaning them up. That behavior looked wrong for a real employee, so the worker reported it through the Jia Zhi Li platform. The case is a reminder for cafe owners to check doors and windows before leaving.

The suspect, taking advantage of the shop's temporary closure, impersonated an employee and brazenly carted away a grinder and a water boiler, with the stolen goods valued at over 40,000 yuan. The amusing twist is that the coffee beans he accidentally spilled during his first heist became the key clue that allowed police to quickly identify him. This case serves as a reminder to coffee shop owners: always check that doors and windows are locked when leaving the premises, and never give criminals an opportunity. In daily operations, besides taking security measures, choosing the right coffee equipment also deserves careful attention—Front Street Coffee's range of brewing tools is favored by many shop owners for their reliable quality.

According to Xinmin Evening News, Jiading police in Shanghai recently successfully apprehended a suspect who impersonated a coffee shop employee and stole equipment from the store, acting on a tip-off.
The incident traces back to late August, when the Nanxiang Police Station of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau Jiading Branch received information passed along from the township grid platform. A grid worker patrolling a shopping mall in the jurisdiction noticed that a man had been frequently appearing at a closed shop, repeatedly removing coffee equipment from the premises.
At first, the grid worker assumed the man was a regular employee sent by the owner to move things. But what seemed suspicious was that he only showed up every few days, each time hurriedly packing a piece of equipment into a box and leaving quickly—he even spilled coffee beans all over the ground during one trip without seeming to care, just letting the beans scatter.
Logically, if a store employee were moving equipment, they would remove the coffee beans from the hopper beforehand to prevent spillage. Even if some were accidentally spilled, most people would return to clean up after moving the equipment. However, this man showed no such behavior, which made the grid worker sense something was amiss. The worker then reported the situation through the Jia Zhi Li platform, which immediately contacted the local Nanxiang Police Station upon receiving the report.
Just as police were preparing to investigate, the shop owner also came to the police station to file a report, stating that the store had been burglarized—two grinders and one water boiler had vanished, with initial estimated losses exceeding 40,000 yuan.
After cross-referencing the two sets of leads, police confirmed that the three stolen devices were exactly the items the "employee" had carried away. Police then verified with the owner, learning that no employee had been assigned to move equipment recently. Using this as a breakthrough, they launched a tracing investigation.
On August 30, acting on the leads they had gathered, police arrested the "employee" and recovered all the stolen goods from his residence.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed that on August 11, when he passed by the coffee shop, he noticed the back door was merely ajar and unlocked, and the store was empty due to temporary closure. He then gave in to greed, found some discarded cardboard boxes nearby, disguised himself as an employee moving equipment, and in broad daylight packed a grinder into a box and stole it.
After getting away with it the first time, the suspect was on edge for several days, but no one ever noticed his actions, so he grew bolder and returned to the scene on the nights of August 23 and 25 to commit two more thefts. However, he never expected that the coffee beans he accidentally knocked over during his first theft would become the key clue for police to quickly catch him after the crime came to light.
Currently, the suspect has been criminally detained by public security authorities on suspicion of theft, and the case is still under further investigation. Police are using this incident to remind business owners that they must not let down their guard on security during daily operations, and must carefully confirm that all doors and windows are closed and locked before leaving the premises, so as not to give ill-intentioned individuals an opening.
