Recently, the UK's Daily Mail exposed a card-skimming incident involving a café employee: a staff member, without the knowledge of either the owner or customers, secretly swapped the store's card machine for his own device during working hours, funneling customer payments into his personal account. The scheme came to light when a customer noticed that a £42.1 meal charge had actually been billed at £94. Over several months, the employee stole a total of about £4,000, was arrested by police and dismissed. However, the court ultimately sentenced him to 12 months of community service and 120 hours of unpaid work, with no prison time and no requirement to repay the café's losses, only a £200 fine. The case has raised concerns about employee abuse of authority and consumer rights protection.

According to a recent report by the UK's Daily Mail, a café employee, while neither the owner nor customers were paying attention, quietly replaced the store's card machine with his own device during working hours, thereby transferring customer payments into his own pocket.
This happened at a local café chain. While paying by card, a customer noticed that the bill for their meal was clearly £42.1 (about 391 yuan), but the amount actually charged to the card was £94 (about 874 yuan).
Having been charged more than double for no reason, the customer assumed it was simply a mistake by the staff member operating the machine and went to the counter to discuss it. During this, the employee tried to refund the overcharged amount using his own card machine, but after repeated attempts failed, he had no choice but to go to a nearby ATM, withdraw cash, and return the money to the customer.
Later, the customer told the store manager what had happened, which unexpectedly immediately aroused the manager's suspicion. After checking the store's accounts, the manager found that the amounts actually received did not match the figures recorded in the books. Upon further investigation, it became clear that the very employee complained about by the customer had secretly used his own card machine at checkout, transferring all the customer's payment into his personal account.
By the time the scheme was exposed, this employee had, over several months, used his own card device to steal a cumulative total of about £4,000 (about 37,219 yuan), causing considerable financial loss to the café. Upon discovering this, the manager immediately called the police and dismissed him on the spot.

It is reported that the person arrested by police had a prior record of employee theft. The prosecutor responsible for the appraisal of this case believed that this conduct constituted an abuse of his position and authority as an employee, using a disguised card device to deceive consumers, and therefore charged him with fraud. The employee also pleaded guilty to his crime.
He confessed that he got the idea after seeing other senior employees at the store use personal card machines to collect payments from customers. So he spent £70 (about 651 yuan) to buy a chip and card device. Whenever a customer said they wanted to pay by card, he would take out his own machine and, without the other party knowing anything, transfer the amount due into his own bank account.

Unexpectedly, although this employee admitted the charges after being arrested, the local court's ruling was that he did not have to go to prison for using a personal card device to steal company money, and sentenced him only to 12 months of community service and 120 hours of unpaid work.
In addition, his lawyer said the employee had apologized to the café and expressed willingness to return the ill-gotten money, but the court ultimately ruled that he did not need to compensate the café for its losses and only had to pay a £200 (about 1,860 yuan) fine.
