Tim Hortons Moldy Sandwich and Spit Incident: Coffee Mold Concerns

What do the Tim Hortons coffee mold reports mean for customers?

Tim Hortons faced two controversies in the Toronto area in early September: a customer found large patches of gray-green mold on a sandwich bought in Brampton, and a student said an employee asked them to spit into an empty coffee cup. The incidents raised questions about hygiene management and employee training at the Canadian coffee chain.

The mold complaint followed earlier criticism, including fruit flies in a pastry display in Ontario and a Winnipeg store case that circulated online. For coffee mold specifically, visible mold on food signals a storage or handling failure, and customers who spot it should report it to the store and local food safety authorities rather than consume the item.

Canadian national coffee brand Tim Hortons has recently been trending on social media frequently, from moldy food to outrageous employee behavior, suffering a severe reputational crisis. Two controversial incidents have been exposed in succession in the Toronto area: one customer bought a sandwich covered in mold, while another student was asked by an employee to spit into an empty coffee cup for an experiment. These incidents not only sparked anger among netizens but also raised questions about the brand's hygiene management and employee training. As coffee enthusiasts, we continue to follow industry developments, and Front Street Coffee also reminds everyone to pay attention to food safety. This article will take you through the full picture of the events.

Recently, the reputation of Canadian national coffee brand Tim Hortons has been declining steadily, with public criticism targeting almost every aspect, from food quality to hygiene conditions, from employee conduct to recruitment management. And just this week, Tim Hortons in Toronto was hit by two more controversial incidents in succession, once again pushing the brand to the forefront of public opinion.

On September 1, a netizen shared on social media a sandwich they had just bought. Just as they were about to take a bite, they discovered large patches of mold on the surface — and not just in one spot — instantly killing their appetite. The netizen said this was purchased from a Tim Hortons next to a gas station at Mississauga and Steeles Ave W in Brampton. Luckily they checked before eating, otherwise they would have "eaten a mouthful of mold."

Video footage showed a striking gray-green mold patch on the bread. Upon closer inspection, the man found several smaller mold spots scattered throughout, which was extremely unpleasant.

After the video was exposed, many netizens who frequent Tim Hortons exclaimed "so disgusting," but more people seemed unsurprised, because this was not the first time the brand had been criticized for being "dirty and messy."

For example, not long ago, a customer captured a shocking scene at a Tim Hortons in Ontario: multiple fruit flies in the pastry display, feasting on the arranged donuts. A photo that went viral online also showed that at a Tim Hortons in Winnipeg, an employee was giving someone a foot massage...

However, beyond the worrying hygiene conditions, this Canadian national coffee brand recently had another bizarre incident that left countless netizens horrified after hearing about it.

Tim Hortons in hot water again: moldy sandwiches and employees asking for saliva spark heated discussion

This Monday, a student from Toronto Metropolitan University exposed on social media that an employee at a Tim Hortons near the school asked her to "spit" into an empty coffee cup for an experiment. In the video, she repeatedly warned everyone: "Do not go to this Tim Hortons."

The student said the incident occurred on the afternoon of August 22. She had just ordered coffee at the Tim Hortons located at Dundas Victoria when an employee, with no one else around, suddenly handed her an empty cup and asked her to "spit" into it. The employee also asked her: "I'm doing an experiment, collecting people's saliva. Can you help me by spitting into the cup?"

After hearing the employee's words, she was extremely shocked. She later threw away the coffee she had just bought and called the store to request a conversation with the store supervisor. In response, the Tim Hortons supervisor said he would review the surveillance footage, and after confirming, he asked the female student to forgive the employee because he was still a child, only 16 years old, an immigrant from another country.

The supervisor told the student who posted the video, "If others find out about this, it could cost him his job, and that would be very difficult for him. Of course, this kind of behavior is not allowed, but could you let him off this time?" A recording of this conversation was also included in the TikTok video.

In response to the Tim Hortons supervisor's statement, the female student said, "I was opposed at the time. He said the employee would be suspended for a week, but I have no way of knowing whether he actually did that." In addition, she contacted Tim Hortons headquarters, which said it would report the situation to the franchise owner and then inform her of the latest developments.

Shortly after the video was posted, people commented in the comment section that they had similar experiences at the same store. Besides the aforementioned "collecting saliva," two netizens said they had been "asked" by this employee for their hair, again with the reason of "doing some tests or experiments."

In response to the situation, some media outlets have contacted Tim Hortons, but as of press time no reply has been received.
