How Did a Service Dispute at a Macau Coffee Shop Turn Violent?

At a coffee shop on Guia Hill in Macau around 4:30 p.m. on July 28, a male customer verbally abused the owner, then pushed and slapped him during an argument. The owner called police, and the man left, only to return about five minutes later holding a fruit knife roughly 11 centimeters long, pointing it at the manager and threatening that next time it would be a gun.

He placed the knife on the bar counter and left, and the owner immediately reported the incident. Public Security Police intercepted the man in the street near Guia Hill within ten minutes. He admitted arguing over service attitude and fetching the knife from a nearby residence. The case has drawn attention to occupational safety across the coffee industry.

In the coffee industry, baristas behind the counter usually face challenges like extraction parameters and latte art patterns. However, an incident that occurred on July 28 at Guia Hill in Macau made a coffee shop owner experience a moment far more harrowing than crafting a perfect espresso—after a dispute over service attitude, a male customer actually turned back after leaving, holding a fruit knife and threatening the shop owner. This incident not only injured the person involved but also sparked widespread discussion about occupational safety among coffee professionals.

On the afternoon of July 28, a shocking sudden incident occurred at a coffee shop on Guia Hill in Macau.

According to the shop owner's account, around 4:30 p.m. that day, the weather was clear, and he was serving every customer as usual. Unexpectedly, a male customer suddenly lost his temper and verbally abused him. As the person in charge of the shop, he immediately stepped forward to try to communicate with the other party. During the conversation, the two had an argument, and the shop owner was repeatedly pushed by the man and was slapped in the face, resulting in injury.

So the shop owner decided to call the police. When the male customer learned that the shop had already contacted the police, he immediately left the coffee shop. The shop owner at the time thought the other party had fled out of fear of the police, so he did not pay much attention and continued making coffee for other guests.

Unexpectedly, just five minutes after leaving, the customer suddenly returned to the shop, holding a fruit knife about 11 centimeters long, pointing it directly at the shop manager, and threatening: "This time it's a knife, next time it's a gun" (meaning this time I bring a knife, next time I'll bring a gun). He placed the fruit knife on the bar counter before leaving.

According to Macao Daily News, after the knife-threatening incident, the coffee shop owner immediately called the police to pursue the matter. Within ten minutes of receiving the report, the Public Security Police intercepted the man on a street near Guia Hill. Upon questioning, the man admitted that while buying coffee he had argued with the shop owner over service attitude, then returned to a nearby residence to get a fruit knife and came back to the coffee shop to threaten and intimidate, but he denied having slapped the other party.

However, police confirmed through the shop's surveillance video that the suspect did indeed commit assault, and therefore filed charges of ordinary assault, use of a prohibited weapon, and intimidation. The case has now been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for investigation. The shop owner stated that he had gone to the hospital for a medical examination and is currently handling this sudden incident according to procedures, and will pursue the other party's legal responsibility.

After learning of the incident, netizens expressed shock, saying "so outrageous," "too terrifying," "so scary," and peers also sighed after seeing the news reports, "worried and angry at the same time." Regarding being threatened with a knife by a customer, the shop owner joked about himself: "I didn't expect baristas to be one of the high-risk professions too."

News of disputes and conflicts between food and beverage workers and customers over issues such as service attitude is not uncommon. When facing such sudden situations, whether baristas or consumers, everyone feels uneasy because they worry about their own safety, fearing they might become the victim in a news report.

Therefore, some netizens suggested that the shop owner "keep some long-range weapons in the shop, like a long bamboo pole, or even a clothes-drying pole, so you can knock the knife away from a safe distance," while others joked: "Sooner or later coffee shops will all need to install iron bars," "Nowadays you need to carry a weapon no matter what you do."

But beyond self-protection, some people are also puzzled by the frequency of violent conflicts. In the view of some, the causes of these sudden incidents are often just a few simple words or certain small actions; if both sides communicated properly, perhaps things would not escalate to the point of physical assault and threatening intimidation.
