Hacienda La Esmeralda was purchased by Rudolph A. Peterson, an American banker of Swedish descent, in 1967. At first it was just a dairy cattle ranch, and only around 1987 did the family gradually convert large tracts of land to coffee cultivation. In 1997, the Peterson family expanded its planting footprint to the high-altitude slopes of Jaramillo—precisely this land, later proven to be exceptionally gifted, planted the seeds of the Geisha legend. Starting in 2007, the Peterson family launched a variety study spanning more than a decade in the high-altitude El Velo division, successively planting more than 400 different strains and observing their performance under the high-altitude microclimate. In their own words, they hoped to find "the next Geisha." This patience has kept the estate always newsworthy and has also placed Hacienda La Esmeralda's name in the traditional varieties category.
